Cutting costs on Driversinsurance may be frustrating for drivers who are new to online comparison shopping. Consumers have so many choices that it can easily become a real hassle to find the best price.
If you have car insurance now, you will most likely be able to save some money using these tips. The purpose of this post is to help you learn how to effectively get price quotes and some tricks to saving. But vehicle owners can benefit by having an understanding of how the larger insurance companies price insurance differently because it can help you find the best coverage.
Compare free insurance coverage price quotes
Many insurance companies provide price estimates online. Doing online price comparisons is fairly simple because you just enter your coverage information into a form. Behind the scenes, their quoting system orders your credit score and driving record and returns a price based on these and other factors.
Being able to quote online helps simplify price comparisons, but the time it takes to visit multiple sites and type in your information can get tiresome after awhile. But it’s also necessary to compare as many rates as possible if you want to get a lower rate.
A better way to locate the lowest prices is to use a quote form to return rates from many companies. It’s a real time-saver, requires much less work on your part, and makes price shopping online much more enjoyable. After sending your information, it is rated with multiple companies and you can pick your choice of the resulting price quotes.
If the quotes result in lower rates, you can click and sign and buy the new coverage. The entire process can be completed in a matter of minutes and could lower your rates considerably.
To find out what other companies charge, click here to open in a new tab and complete the simple form. If you have your current policy handy, we recommend you complete the form with the insurance coverages just like they are on your policy. Using the same limits helps guarantee you will have a rate comparison based on identical coverages.

Lower rates by qualifying for these seven discounts
Car insurance can cost a lot, but you can get discounts that you may not even know about. A few discounts will be applied when you purchase, but some need to be asked for before being credited.
- Paper-free Discount – A few larger online companies will discount your bill up to fifty bucks simply for signing over the internet.
- College Student – Kids who attend college more than 100 miles from home and leave their car at home can receive lower rates.
- Own a Home and Save – Being a homeowner can get you a discount because of the fact that having a home is proof of financial responsibility.
- Theft Prevention Discount – Vehicles equipped with tracking devices and advanced anti-theft systems are stolen less frequently and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
- Mature Driver Discount – If you qualify as a senior citizen, you may be able to get better insurance rates on Astro coverage.
- Telematics Data – Policyholders that allow their insurance company to analyze their driving habits by using a telematics device such as Drivewise from Allstate or Snapshot from Progressive could see a rate decrease as long as they are good drivers.
- Service Members Pay Less – Being deployed in the military could qualify you for better prices.
You can save money using discounts, but most discount credits are not given to all coverage premiums. A few only apply to the price of certain insurance coverages like medical payments or collision. So even though you would think you would end up receiving a 100% discount, insurance companies wouldn’t stay in business. But any discount should definitely cut the amount you pay for coverage.
Large insurance companies and their offered discounts include:
- Geico offers premium reductions for five-year accident-free, defensive driver, multi-vehicle, military active duty, and emergency military deployment.
- USAA has discounts for military installation, good student, new vehicle, defensive driver, annual mileage, and vehicle storage.
- Progressive includes discounts for online quote discount, multi-policy, online signing, continuous coverage, and multi-vehicle.
- American Family offers discounts for air bags, multi-vehicle, defensive driver, early bird, mySafetyValet, and Steer into Savings.
- Esurance discounts include DriveSense, anti-lock brakes, claim free, Switch & Save, good student, defensive driver, and online quote.
- Farmers Insurance policyholders can earn discounts including electronic funds transfer, early shopping, alternative fuel, bundle discounts, good student, and distant student.
- State Farm may offer discounts for Drive Safe & Save, safe vehicle, defensive driving training, anti-theft, good student, and good driver.
Before purchasing a policy, check with all the companies which discounts you may be entitled to. Some discounts may not be available everywhere. To see insurance companies with discount rates, click here.
Car insurance is unique, just like you
When it comes to choosing coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no perfect coverage plan. Everyone’s situation is a little different.
For example, these questions can aid in determining if your insurance needs would benefit from professional advice.
- How can I find cheaper teen driver insurance?
- How much underlying liability do I need for an umbrella policy?
- Where can I get insurance after a DUI in my state?
- Am I covered when driving on a suspended license?
- Why am I required to buy high-risk coverage?
- Are rock chip repairs covered?
- Is rental equipment covered for theft or damage?
- Should I have combined single limit or split liability limits?
- Exactly who is provided coverage by my policy?
- Do I have coverage when making deliveries for my home business?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to an agent. To find an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form.
Car insurance 101
Learning about specific coverages of your auto insurance policy can be of help when determining the right coverages and proper limits and deductibles. The coverage terms in a policy can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage gives you protection when the “other guys” do not carry enough liability coverage. It can pay for medical payments for you and your occupants and damage to your 1991 Chevy Astro.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages should not be overlooked. Usually the UM/UIM limits are similar to your liability insurance amounts.
Collision insurance
This coverage pays for damage to your Astro resulting from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. You have to pay a deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision coverage pays for things such as colliding with another moving vehicle, backing into a parked car, colliding with a tree and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to increase the deductible to bring the cost down.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive insurance pays for damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims like damage from getting keyed, falling objects, theft and fire damage. The most a auto insurance company will pay at claim time is the market value of your vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Liability coverage
Liability coverage will cover damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property. It protects you from legal claims by others, and does not provide coverage for damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. As an example, you may have liability limits of 25/50/25 which stand for $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, $50,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000. Some companies may use a combined limit which provides one coverage limit and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability can pay for claims such as medical services, structural damage, bail bonds, funeral expenses and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a personal decision, but consider buying higher limits if possible.
Medical payments coverage and PIP
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage reimburse you for short-term medical expenses such as rehabilitation expenses, doctor visits, surgery, ambulance fees and hospital visits. The coverages can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance plan or if you do not have health coverage. They cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not available in all states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
