Want cheaper auto insurance rates for your Pontiac Sunbird? If you are new to online price comparisons, by this point your are probably confused thanks to all the different types of online companies that all promise the best rates.
Quote insurance coverage online
Effectively comparing insurance coverage prices can be challenging if you aren’t aware of the best way to get rate quotes. You can waste a few hours (or days) talking to insurance agencies in your area, or you could save time and use online quoting to get rate comparisons in just a few minutes.
Many insurance companies participate in an industry program that enables customers to enter their coverage request one time, and every company returns a rated price for coverage. This saves time by eliminating quote requests to each company.
To use this form to compare rates click here to open in new window.
The only drawback to using this type of system is buyers cannot specifically choose which companies you want to price. If you would rather choose specific providers to request quotes from, we have a page of companies who write insurance coverage in your area. Click to view list.
Take whichever approach you prefer, but double check that you are using nearly identical coverages for each price quote. If you are comparing different deductibles then you won’t be able to determine the best price for your Pontiac Sunbird. Just slight variations in insurance coverages could mean much higher rates. Just keep in mind that comparing a wide range of rates increases your odds of finding more affordable rates.

Lower your insurance rates with discounts
Companies don’t necessarily list every policy discount very well, so we researched some of the best known and the harder-to-find discounts that you may qualify for. If you do not check that you are getting every discount you qualify for, you’re just leaving money on the table.
- Discount for Low Mileage – Driving less can qualify you for better premium rates on cars that stay parked.
- No Charge for an Accident – This one is not really a discount per se, but companies like Liberty Mutual and Geico will let one accident slide before they charge you more for coverage as long as you don’t have any claims prior to being involved in the accident.
- ABS Braking Discount – Cars that have steering control and anti-lock brakes are much safer to drive and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
- Resident Student – who are attending college and won’t have access to an insured vehicle can be insured at a reduced rate.
- Accident Free – Drivers with accident-free driving histories have much lower rates in comparison to bad drivers.
- Payment Method – If you can afford to pay the entire bill rather than paying in monthly installments you could save up to 5%.
- Senior Citizen Discount – If you’re over the age of 55, you could receive reduced rates on Sunbird coverage.
A little note about advertised discounts, most credits do not apply to the entire policy premium. Some only apply to individual premiums such as liability, collision or medical payments. So even though you would think you would end up receiving a 100% discount, you aren’t that lucky.
Popular insurance companies and their possible discounts are:
- American Family has discounts for multi-vehicle, air bags, good driver, Steer into Savings, TimeAway discount, mySafetyValet, and early bird.
- Farm Bureau includes discounts for safe driver, renewal discount, good student, youthful driver, and multi-policy.
- State Farm offers discounts including passive restraint, multiple policy, Drive Safe & Save, multiple autos, and good driver.
- Travelers discounts include driver training, multi-policy, early quote, save driver, and good student.
- The Hartford may have discounts that include anti-theft, air bag, defensive driver, bundle, good student, driver training, and vehicle fuel type.
- Geico policyholders can earn discounts including seat belt use, air bags, federal employee, anti-lock brakes, anti-theft, and five-year accident-free.
- Progressive may offer discounts for online signing, online quote discount, multi-vehicle, good student, continuous coverage, multi-policy, and homeowner.
If you need inexpensive insurance quotes, ask each company to apply every possible discount. Savings may not apply everywhere. To find providers that offer some of these discounts, click this link.
Six tips to get cheap insurance premiums
Part of the car insurance buying process is learning some of the factors that go into determining your policy premiums. If you have a feel for what controls the rates you pay, this helps enable you to make changes that may reward you with lower rates. Multiple criteria are used when you get your auto insurance bill. Some factors are common sense like an MVR report, although some other factors are less apparent such as whether you are married or how financially stable you are.
- An active claims history can increase rates – If you are a frequent claim filer, don’t be surprised to see either a policy non-renewal or much higher rates. Auto insurance companies award better rates to policyholders who do not rely on their insurance for small claims. Your car insurance is designed for the bigger claims that can’t be paid out-of-pocket.
- Certain jobs pay higher premiums – Careers like fire fighterspolice officers and emergency personnel generally pay the highest rates in part from intense work-related stress and incredibly demanding work hours. On the flip side, jobs like scientists, historians and performers pay the least on Sunbird coverage.
- Liability insurance is critical – Your policy’s liability coverage will afford coverage if ever a jury decides you are liable for damages from an accident. It will provide legal defense to defend your case. Liability insurance is quite affordable compared to insuring for physical damage coverage, so drivers should make sure they buy enough to cover all assets.
- See if your company offers a multi-policy discount – Lots of companies will award discounts for people who buy several policies from them such as combining an auto and homeowners policy. Even if you’re getting this discount it’s always a smart idea to shop around to make sure you are getting the best deal.
- Consider raising deductibles – The deductibles are how much you are willing to pay if a covered claim is submitted. Insurance for physical damage, also called ‘full coverage’, insures against damage to your car. Some coverage claims could be colliding with a stationary object, animal collisions, and damage from wind. The more damage repair cost you’re willing to pay, the less your company will charge you for insurance on Sunbird coverage.
- Optional features can affect premiums – Choosing to buy a car with a theft deterrent system can save you a little every year. Advanced theft deterrents such as vehicle immobilizer systems, OnStar, and tracking devices like LoJack all help stop auto theft and help lower rates.
You are unique and your car insurance should be too
When it comes to buying proper insurance coverage, there really is no “perfect” insurance plan. Everyone’s needs are different.
Here are some questions about coverages that may help highlight whether your personal situation will benefit from professional help.
- Is my teen driver covered when they drive my company car?
- Do I need roadside assistance coverage?
- Does insurance cover tools stolen from my truck?
- Will filing a claim cost me more?
- What discounts do I qualify for?
- Can I still get insurance after a DUI?
- Is my babysitter covered when using my vehicle?
If you’re not sure about those questions, you might consider talking to an insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, fill out this quick form.

Auto insurance 101
Having a good grasp of insurance helps when choosing the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Insurance terms can be impossible to understand and coverage can change by endorsement.
Medical expense coverage – Med pay and PIP coverage pay for immediate expenses for funeral costs, prosthetic devices, rehabilitation expenses, chiropractic care and pain medications. The coverages can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. It covers not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants as well as getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is only offered in select states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Coverage for liability – Liability coverage can cover damage that occurs to people or other property. This coverage protects you against claims from other people, and doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show limits of 50/100/50 which stand for a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a per accident bodily injury limit of $100,000, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery.
Liability can pay for things like repair bills for other people’s vehicles, loss of income and attorney fees. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.
Comprehensive protection – This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims like damage from flooding, damage from getting keyed, fire damage and falling objects. The maximum payout a insurance company will pay at claim time is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider dropping full coverage.
Uninsured or underinsured coverage – Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. It can pay for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as damage to your Pontiac Sunbird.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.
Collision – This covers damage to your Sunbird caused by collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You first must pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision can pay for claims like sustaining damage from a pot hole, rolling your car, backing into a parked car and sideswiping another vehicle. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Make a quick buck
Lower-priced auto insurance is possible from both online companies in addition to local insurance agencies, so you should be comparing quotes from both in order to have the best chance of saving money. There are still a few companies who may not have rates over the internet and these smaller companies prefer to sell through local independent agencies.
Consumers switch companies for any number of reasons including delays in responding to claim requests, not issuing a premium refund, policy non-renewal or being labeled a high risk driver. It doesn’t matter why you want to switch switching companies is easier than you think.
When trying to cut insurance costs, it’s a bad idea to buy poor coverage just to save money. In many cases, someone sacrificed uninsured motorist or liability limits only to discover later that the small savings ended up costing them much more. Your aim should be to get the best coverage possible for the lowest cost, but do not skimp to save money.
