Do you think you bought an expensive car insurance policy? Believe me, many consumers are in the same pinch. Due to the large number of insurance companies to choose from, it’s difficult to choose the best car insurance provider.
The purpose of this post is to help you learn the best way to quote coverages and some money-saving tips. If you are paying for car insurance now, you stand a good chance to be able to reduce your rates substantially using this strategy. Drivers only need to know how to get comparison quotes online.
How to shop insurance coverage online
There are multiple methods to compare insurance coverage prices but some are less labor-intensive and much quicker. You could spend the better part of a day driving to local insurance agents in your area, or you could save time and use the internet to get prices fast.
Most of the larger companies enroll in a system that enables customers to enter their coverage request one time, and every company then gives them pricing for coverage. This prevents consumers from doing quote requests for each company.
To participate in this free quote system, click here to open in new window.
The only drawback to pricing coverage this way is that you can’t choose the companies to get quotes from. If you would rather choose specific insurance companies to request quotes from, we put together a list of the cheapest insurance coverage companies in your area. View list of insurance companies.
You can choose any of those ways to find more affodable coverage, but compare nearly identical information for every company. If each company quotes different deductibles you will not be able to make an equal comparison.

Don’t believe everything you hear
Drivers can’t avoid all the ads that promise big savings from companies such as Allstate and Progressive. All the companies have a common claim that you can save just by switching to them.
How do they all save you money? This is the trick they use.
Many companies have an ideal profile for the type of driver that will not have excessive claims. One example of a profitable customer may need to be between the ages of 30 and 50, has no prior claims, and insures a new vehicle. Any driver that meets those criteria may get the lowest rates and will save when switching.
Insureds who do not meet these stringent criteria will probably have to pay higher prices and ends up with the customer buying from someone else. The wording the ads use say “customers who switch” not “everyone that quotes” save that kind of money. That’s the way companies can truthfully make claims that they all have the best premium rates.
This really emphasizes why you really need to get price quotes at each policy renewal. Because you cannot predict which insurance companies will have the best auto insurance rates.
Save with these discounts
Some insurance providers don’t necessarily list every discount they offer very clearly, so below is a list some of the more common as well as the least known credits available to lower your premiums when you buy car insurance online.
- Anti-lock Brake System – Cars, trucks, and SUVs with ABS braking systems or traction control prevent accidents and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
- Seat Belt Usage – Drivers who require all occupants to fasten their seat belts could save 15% on the premium charged for medical payments and/or PIP.
- Driver Training Discounts – Participating in a course that instructs on driving safety could possibly earn you a 5% discount if your company offers it.
- Accident Waiver – Not necessarily a discount, but certain companies will let one accident slide before raising your premiums so long as you haven’t had any claims for a particular time prior to the accident.
- Drive Less and Save – Fewer annual miles on your Buick could earn cheaper auto insurancerates.
- Good Grades Discount – Performing well in school may save as much as 25% on a car insurance quote. The good student discount can last until age 25.
- Policy Bundle Discount – If you can bundle your auto and home insurance and insure them with the same company you could get a discount of 10% to 20% off each policy.
- Distant Student Discount – Youth drivers who live away from home to go to college and don’t have a car may qualify for this discount.
- Military Rewards – Being deployed with a military unit could qualify you for better prices.
Don’t be shocked that most discounts do not apply the the whole policy. Most cut the price of certain insurance coverages like comprehensive or collision. Even though it may seem like you would end up receiving a 100% discount, it doesn’t quite work that way.

Special considerations
When choosing proper insurance coverage, there is no “best” method to buy coverage. Each situation is unique so your insurance needs to address that. For instance, these questions can aid in determining if your situation may require specific advice.
- Are my tools covered if they get stolen from my vehicle?
- Am I covered when pulling a rental trailer?
- Does my liability insurance cover pulling a trailer or camper?
- Can I get a multi-policy discount?
- What is no-fault insurance?
- Will I lose any money if I cancel my policy before it expires?
- Why does it cost so much to insure a teen driver?
- Are all vehicle passengers covered by medical payments coverage?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you may need to chat with an agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form or click here for a list of insurance coverage companies in your area. It is quick, free and may give you better protection.

Insurance coverage breakdown
Learning about specific coverages of your insurance policy can be of help when determining the right coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. The terms used in a policy can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Below you’ll find typical coverages available from insurance companies.
Liability car insurance
This can cover injuries or damage you cause to other’s property or people. It protects YOU from claims by other people, and doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You might see values of 50/100/50 which stand for a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a per accident bodily injury limit of $100,000, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Some companies may use a combined limit which limits claims to one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability can pay for claims like attorney fees, repair bills for other people’s vehicles, legal defense fees, repair costs for stationary objects and medical expenses. How much liability should you purchase? That is a decision to put some thought into, but you should buy as large an amount as possible.
Comprehensive protection
This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims like hail damage, theft, a broken windshield and falling objects. The most you’ll receive from a claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Collision coverage
This coverage will pay to fix damage to your Century caused by collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision coverage protects against claims such as colliding with another moving vehicle, hitting a mailbox and crashing into a building. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so you might think about dropping it from older vehicles. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible to bring the cost down.
Uninsured or underinsured coverage
Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, their limits can quickly be used up. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea. Normally these coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Medical expense coverage
Med pay and PIP coverage pay for short-term medical expenses like rehabilitation expenses, chiropractic care, prosthetic devices, X-ray expenses and dental work. They are used in conjunction with a health insurance plan or if you are not covered by health insurance. It covers all vehicle occupants as well as if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal Injury Protection is not available in all states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Save your cold hard cash
The cheapest 1994 Buick Century insurance can be sourced on the web in addition to many insurance agents, so get free car insurance quotes from both of them to get a complete price analysis. Some companies don’t offer price quotes online and usually these regional carriers only sell coverage through independent insurance agencies.
As you quote car insurance, it’s not a good idea to buy lower coverage limits just to save a few bucks. There are too many instances where an accident victim reduced full coverage to discover at claim time that the savings was not a smart move. The aim is to get the best coverage possible at a price you can afford, but don’t skip important coverages to save money.
