Are you regretting buying an overpriced auto insurance policy? Don’t feel bad because there are many people just like you.
Multiple car insurance companies compete to insure your vehicles, and it can be difficult to compare rates to find the absolute cheapest price
How to lower your auto insurance cost
Effectively comparing auto insurance prices can be exhausting if you don’t understand the best way to get rate quotes. You can waste a few hours (or days) talking about coverages with insurance agencies in your area, or you could save time and use online quoting to achieve your goal.
Most of the larger companies are enrolled in a marketplace that allows shoppers to send in one quote, and at least one company returns a competitive quote. This eliminates the need for quote forms for every auto insurance company. To participate in this free quote system, click to open in new window.
The single downside to using this type of system is buyers cannot specifically choose which companies to get quotes from. So if you want to select specific insurance companies to receive pricing from, we put together a list of companies who write auto insurance in your area. Click here to view list.
However you get your quotes, do your best to enter the same coverage information with every price quote. If you are comparing different limits and deductibles on each one you can’t possibly determine which company has the best rates. Having just a slight variation in limits may result in large price differences. And when comparing auto insurance rates, know that comparing more rates from different companies helps you find more affordable rates.

Cheap insurance rates with discounts
Some insurers do not list every policy discount in an easy-to-find place, so the following is a list of some of the best known in addition to some of the lesser obvious credits available to bring down your rates. If you do not check that you are getting every discount available, you are not getting the best rate possible.
- Discounts for Multiple Vehicles – Buying a policy with several vehicles on one policy qualifies for this discount.
- Senior Citizens – Seniors can possibly qualify for a slight reduction on a car insurance quote for Suburban coverage.
- Low Mileage Discounts – Driving fewer miles may allow you to get better rates on cars that stay parked.
- Early Payment Discounts – By paying your entire bill at once rather than paying monthly you may reduce your total bill.
- Waiver for an Accident – Not really a discount, but companies like State Farm and Allstate allow you one accident before they charge you more for coverage with the catch being you have to be claim-free for a certain period of time.
- Military Deployment Discount – Being deployed in the military could be rewarded with lower insurance rates.
Remember that most discounts do not apply to the overall cost of the policy. A few only apply to the price of certain insurance coverages like physical damage coverage or medical payments. So when the math indicates it’s possible to get free car insurance, company stockholders wouldn’t be very happy.
Popular insurance companies and their possible discounts are outlined below.
- Geico may include discounts for military active duty, multi-vehicle, driver training, seat belt use, multi-policy, anti-lock brakes, and anti-theft.
- MetLife offers discounts for multi-policy, defensive driver, accident-free, good driver, claim-free, and good student.
- State Farm discounts include multiple autos, student away at school, multiple policy, Steer Clear safe driver discount, safe vehicle, accident-free, and Drive Safe & Save.
- Progressive may offer discounts for homeowner, good student, online signing, online quote discount, and multi-vehicle.
- Mercury Insurance offers discounts including professional/association, multi-policy, annual mileage, accident-free, multi-car, and ease of repair.
- 21st Century has savings for 55 and older, defensive driver, early bird, anti-lock brakes, and driver training.
- Allstate includes discounts for EZ pay plan discount, utility vehicle, good payer, premier plus, FullPay discount, eSmart discount, and resident student.

GMC Suburban insurance costs can be reduced
Lots of things are used when premium rates are determined. Some are pretty understandable such as your driving history, but others are not as apparent such as whether you are married or your financial responsibility.
Shown below are a few of the “ingredients” companies use to determine premiums.
- Better premiums on vehicles with better crash test results – Vehicles with good safety scores cost less to insure. Vehicles engineered for safety help reduce the chance of injuries in an accident and any reduction in injury severity means less money paid by your insurance company passed on to you as lower rates. If your GMC Suburban has at least four stars on Safercar.gov you may pay a lower rate.
- Save money with alarm systems – Driving a car with a theft deterrent system can save you some money. Theft prevention devices like OnStar, LoJack tracking, and tamper alarms can help prevent car theft.
- Low stress occupation equals lower prices – Do you have a high-stress occupation? Careers like judgesair traffic controllers and miners generally pay the highest rates due to intense work situations and extremely grueling work hours. On the flip side, jobs like farmers, engineers and the unemployed generally pay rates lower than average for Suburban coverage.
- Allowing your policy to lapse raises premiums – Having a gap between insurance policy dates can be a guaranteed way to increase your insurance coverage rates. In addition to paying higher premiums, failure to provide proof of insurance may result in a steep fine or even jail time.
Tailor your insurance coverage to you
When it comes to choosing the best insurance coverage, there is no “perfect” insurance plan. Each situation is unique so this has to be addressed. Here are some questions about coverages that might point out whether your personal situation would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- Do I really need UM/UIM coverage?
- How can I get my company to pay me more for my totalled car?
- Do I have coverage for damage caused while driving under the influence?
- What if I owe more than I can insure my car for?
- How can I get high-risk coverage after a DUI?
- If I drive on a suspended license am I covered?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you know they apply to you, then you may want to think about talking to an agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form or click here for a list of insurance companies in your area.

What insurance coverages do you need?
Understanding the coverages of your insurance policy can be of help when determining which coverages you need at the best deductibles and correct limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. Shown next are the normal coverages found on the average insurance policy.
Auto liability insurance – Liability insurance provides protection from damage that occurs to a person or their property by causing an accident. It protects you from legal claims by others, and does not provide coverage for your injuries or vehicle damage.
Coverage consists of three different limits, per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have policy limits of 50/100/50 which stand for $50,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and property damage coverage for $50,000.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as bail bonds, attorney fees and medical services. How much coverage you buy is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers – Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other drivers when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include hospital bills for your injuries as well as damage to your GMC Suburban.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is very important.
Comprehensive insurance – This will pay to fix damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first have to pay a deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims like falling objects, hitting a deer, a tree branch falling on your vehicle and hail damage. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Coverage for medical expenses – Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP kick in for expenses like prosthetic devices, rehabilitation expenses, doctor visits and X-ray expenses. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance plan or if you do not have health coverage. It covers all vehicle occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not an option in every state and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Collision coverages – Collision coverage covers damage to your Suburban resulting from a collision with an object or car. A deductible applies and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision insurance covers things such as damaging your car on a curb, scraping a guard rail, colliding with another moving vehicle, sideswiping another vehicle and colliding with a tree. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are older. Another option is to bump up the deductible to bring the cost down.
Shop smart and save
When shopping online for auto insurance, never buy less coverage just to save a little money. There have been many situations where someone sacrificed uninsured motorist or liability limits only to regret at claim time they didn’t have enough coverage. Your aim should be to buy the best coverage you can find for the lowest cost while still protecting your assets.
In this article, we covered a lot of techniques to save on 1994 GMC Suburban insurance. The most important thing to understand is the more price quotes you have, the better your chances of lowering your car insurance rates. Drivers may discover the lowest priced auto insurance comes from some of the lesser-known companies. These smaller insurers may have significantly lower car insurance rates on certain market segments as compared to the big name companies such as Progressive and Geico.
