Searching for the cheapest insurance rates for your Toyota MR2? Trying to find low cost insurance can be a challenge for drivers new to comparison shopping online. You have so many options available that it can turn into a chore to find the lowest price.
How much does auto insurance cost?
When shopping for the cheapest insurance quotes, there are a couple of ways to obtain and compare prices from many different insurance companies. The fastest way to compare Toyota MR2 insurance prices consists of obtaining rate quotes online. This is quite simple and can be completed using a couple different methods.
Hands down the most simple method to get quotes for comparison is to use a rate comparison form click to view form in new window. This style of form keeps you from doing separate quotation requests for each price estimate. One form submission will return quotes from multiple companies. It’s definitely the quickest method.
A harder way to analyze rates requires a visit to each company website and repeat the quote process again and again. For sake of this example, we’ll pretend you want to get rates from Geico, State Farm and Allstate. To get each rate you have to visit each site and type in your information over and over, which is why most consumers use the first method. For a handy list of car insurance company links in your area, click here.
Whichever way you choose to compare rates, be sure you’re using apples-to-apples quote information on every quote you get. If you have different values for each quote it will be impossible to determine the lowest rate for your Toyota MR2. Slightly different coverage limits can make a big difference in price. Just keep in mind that comparing more company’s prices helps improve the odds of finding a lower rate than you’re paying now. Some smaller insurers to not give rate quotes online, so it’s recommended that you also compare price quotes from the smaller companies as well.

These discounts can cut insurance coverage rates
Insuring your fleet can be pricey, but you may be missing some discounts that could drop your premiums quite a bit. Some discounts will apply at the time of quoting, but less common discounts must be asked for prior to receiving the credit. If you do not check that you are getting every discount possible, you may be paying too high a price.
- Discount for Swiching Early – Some larger companies reward drivers for switching companies prior to your current policy expiration. It could save around 10% when you buy insurance online.
- Drivers Ed for Students – Have your child enroll and complete driver’s education as it will make them better drivers and lower rates.
- Discount for Low Mileage – Fewer annual miles on your Toyota could qualify for lower premium rates due to less chance of an accident.
- Defensive Driver Discounts – Participating in a class that teaches defensive driver techniques is a good idea and can lower rates if you qualify.
- Discounts for Government Workers – Being employed by or retired from a federal job can earn a discount up to 10% for MR2 insurance depending on your company.
- Claim-Free Discount – Good drivers with no accidents pay less when compared with accident-prone drivers.
- Save over 55 – Mature drivers could receive lower premium rates for MR2 insurance.
- Anti-lock Brakes – Vehicles equipped with ABS or steering control prevent accidents and the ABS can save up to 10%.
- Discount for Good Grades – Performing well in school may save as much as 25% on a insurance quote. Earning this discount can benefit you up until you turn 25.
Discounts reduce rates, but you should keep in mind that some credits don’t apply to all coverage premiums. Some only reduce the cost of specific coverages such as liability, collision or medical payments. So even though it sounds like all the discounts add up to a free policy, that’s just not realistic.
A few of the larger companies and some of the discounts can be read below.
- State Farm offers premium reductions for Steer Clear safe driver discount, multiple policy, good student, Drive Safe & Save, good driver, and safe vehicle.
- Liberty Mutual has savings for multi-car, newly married, multi-policy, newly retired, new graduate, exclusive group savings, and teen driver discount.
- American Family discounts include accident-free, TimeAway discount, mySafetyValet, good driver, early bird, good student, and bundled insurance.
- Progressive may include discounts for online signing, multi-vehicle, multi-policy, online quote discount, continuous coverage, homeowner, and good student.

Double check with each insurance company what discounts are available to you. Savings might not be offered in every state. To see a list of insurers that offer the discounts shown above, click here.
Toyota MR2 insurance costs can be more affordable
Part of the insurance buying process is learning the different types of things that go into determining insurance rates. When you understand what impacts premium levels, this helps enable you to make changes that may result in lower premium levels. Lots of things are used in the calculation when pricing auto insurance. Most are fairly basic such as your driving record, but other factors are more obscure like your continuous coverage or your vehicle rating.
The factors shown below are a few of the things that factor into rates.
- Gender matters – Statistics have proven that females take fewer risks when driving. This data doesn’t prove that females are better drivers. Both sexes are responsible for accidents at a similar rate, but the males cause more damage. Men also statistically get ticketed for serious violations like driving under the influence (DUI). Male drivers age 16 to 19 are several times more likely to be in an accident so it costs more to insure them.
- Reduce premiums by driving safer vehicles – Cars with five star safety ratings tend to have better insurance rates. Safer cars reduce injuries and better occupant protection means your insurance company pays less and lower rates for you. If your Toyota MR2 scored better than four stars on Safercar.gov you may pay a lower rate.
- Liability preserves assets – A critical coverage on your policy, liability insurance provides coverage if ever you are found to be at fault for physical damage or personal injury to other. Liability insurance provides legal defense up to the limits shown on your policy. Liability insurance is pretty cheap compared to insuring for physical damage coverage, so do not cut corners here.
- Fewer miles means better premiums – The higher the mileage driven every year the higher the price you pay to insure it. Many insurance companies rate vehicles determined by how the vehicle is used. Vehicles that do not get driven very much get more affordable rates than vehicles that are driven to work every day. It’s always a good idea to double check that your insurance declarations sheet shows the proper vehicle usage. Having the wrong rating on your MR2 can cost quite a bit.
When do I need an agent’s advice?
When it comes to choosing coverage for your vehicles, there is no “best” method to buy coverage. Each situation is unique.
These are some specific questions may help highlight whether your personal situation may require specific advice.
- If my pet gets injured in an accident are they covered?
- Do I need rental car coverage?
- Can my teen drive my company car?
- Is rental equipment covered for theft or damage?
- Do I need roadside assistance coverage?
- Should I have a commercial auto policy?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you know they apply to you then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, simply complete this short form.

Can switching companies really save?
21st Century, Allstate and State Farm regularly use television and radio advertisements. They all seem to make the promise about saving some big amount after switching to their company. How is it plausible that every one can offer drivers better rates?
Many companies have a certain “appetite” for the driver that earns them the highest profit. One example of a profitable customer could possibly be married and over the age of 30, is a homeowner, and drives less than 7,500 miles a year. A customer who meets those qualifications will get low rates and will also pay quite a bit less when switching companies.
Insureds who do not fit this stringent profile must pay a higher rate which translates to the customer buying from someone else. If you listen to the ad wording, they say “drivers who switch” but not “all drivers who get quotes” can save as much as they claim. That is how companies can make it sound like they have such great rates.
Different companies use different criteria so you really should get as many free insurance quotes as possible. It is impossible to guess which company will have the best prices for your profile.
Insurance specifics
Learning about specific coverages of insurance can help you determine the best coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. Policy terminology can be difficult to understand and coverage can change by endorsement.
Comprehensive coverages
This pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You need to pay your deductible first then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims like hail damage, damage from a tornado or hurricane, damage from getting keyed and fire damage. The most you’ll receive from a claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider dropping full coverage.
Uninsured and underinsured coverage
This protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when the “other guys” are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. It can pay for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your Toyota MR2.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is very important. Usually these limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Coverage for liability
This coverage will cover damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property that is your fault. It protects you against other people’s claims. Liability doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Liability coverage has three limits: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You commonly see limits of 100/300/100 which stand for a $100,000 limit per person for injuries, a total of $300,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and $100,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Another option is a combined single limit or CSL which provides one coverage limit and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability insurance covers claims such as funeral expenses, repair costs for stationary objects, medical services, attorney fees and bail bonds. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is your choice, but consider buying as high a limit as you can afford.
Coverage for medical payments
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP provide coverage for immediate expenses such as hospital visits, dental work, X-ray expenses, ambulance fees and EMT expenses. They are used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants and will also cover if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP coverage is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Collision coverage protection
Collision coverage covers damage to your MR2 resulting from a collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision can pay for claims like colliding with a tree, sideswiping another vehicle, backing into a parked car, colliding with another moving vehicle and hitting a parking meter. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from older vehicles. Another option is to choose a higher deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Make a quick buck
When getting insurance quotes online, it’s not a good idea to buy lower coverage limits just to save a few bucks. In too many instances, an accident victim reduced collision coverage only to regret that it was a big error on their part. The goal is to find the BEST coverage at an affordable rate and still be able to protect your assets.
Some companies do not offer internet price quotes and most of the time these small insurance companies work with local independent agents. Low-cost 1995 Toyota MR2 insurance can be purchased on the web in addition to local insurance agencies, and you need to comparison shop both to have the best chance of lowering rates.
Consumers who switch companies do it for any number of reasons including delays in responding to claim requests, extreme rates for teen drivers, unfair underwriting practices and questionable increases in premium. Regardless of your reason, choosing a new insurance company is actually quite simple.
