Sick and tired of scraping the payment together to keep your car insured? Your situation is no different than many other consumers.
Numerous auto insurance companies battle for your hard-earned dollar, and because of this it can be hard to compare insurers and uncover the absolute lowest rate possible.
You should make it a habit to compare rates on a regular basis because rates go up and down regularly. Even if you think you had the best premium rates on Esteem coverage on your last policy there is a good chance you can find better prices now. There is a lot of wrong information about insurance coverage online but I’m going to show you the easiest ways to save money.
If you currently have a car insurance policy, you should be able to reduce your rates substantially using these methods. Choosing the best insurance company for you is easy if you know what you’re doing. Although car owners need to have an understanding of the methods companies use to price online insurance.
How to shop insurance online
Performing a rate comparison can be a lot of work if you don’t know the best way to get rate quotes. You could spend the better part of a day driving to insurance companies in your area, or you can utilize the web to maximize your effort.
Many of the larger companies are enrolled in a marketplace where insurance shoppers submit their information once, and each participating company returns a rated price based on that data. This eliminates the need for repetitive form submissions to every company.
To use this form to compare rates click here to start a free quote.
The one downside to pricing coverage this way is you cannot specify the providers to receive prices from. If you would rather choose individual companies to compare rates, we have a listing of companies who write insurance in your area. Click here to view list.
Whichever way you choose to compare rates, make sure you are using apples-to-apples coverage limits and deductibles on every price quote you get. If your comparisons have different deductibles you will not be able to get a fair rate comparison. Even a minor difference in coverage limits can result in a big premium difference. And when comparing insurance rates, know that comparing a wide range of rates increases your odds of finding a better price.

Don’t overlook these auto insurance discounts
Car insurance companies don’t list all available discounts very clearly, so the list below gives a summary of both the well known as well as some of the hidden discounts you could be receiving when you buy insurance online. If you are not receiving all the discounts you deserve, you’re paying more than you need to.
- Homeowners Discount – Owning your own home or condo can get you a discount since home ownership requires a higher level of personal finance.
- 55 and Retired – Drivers over the age of 55 could receive a discount up to 10% on Esteem coverage.
- No Accidents – Good drivers with no accidents pay less in comparison to bad drivers.
- Good Student Discount – Performing well in school can earn a discount of 20% or more. Most companies allow this discount until age 25.
- Passenger Safety Discount – Cars that have air bags or motorized seat belts may earn rate discounts of up to 25% or more.
One thing to note about discounts is that some of the credits will not apply the the whole policy. A few only apply to specific coverage prices like collision or personal injury protection. Even though the math looks like it’s possible to get free car insurance, insurance companies wouldn’t stay in business. Any amount of discount will positively reduce your overall premium however.
Companies that may offer policyholders these benefits may include but are not limited to:
It’s a good idea to ask every company which discounts they offer. Some of the earlier mentioned discounts might not be offered in your state.
When to get professional advice
When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage, there really is no cookie cutter policy. Everyone’s needs are different and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. Here are some questions about coverages that can aid in determining whether you will benefit from professional help.
- At what point should I drop full coverage?
- What exactly is covered by my policy?
- Is business equipment covered while in my vehicle?
- Is upholstery damage covered by car insurance?
- How much liability insurance is required?
- Am I covered when pulling a rental trailer?
- Does insurance cover tools stolen from my truck?
- What is an SR-22 filing?
- Is my teen driver covered when they drive my company car?
- Should I buy full coverage?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you think they might apply to your situation, then you may want to think about talking to a licensed insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, complete this form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.
Coverages available on your policy
Knowing the specifics of a car insurance policy helps when choosing which coverages you need at the best deductibles and correct limits. The terms used in a policy can be ambiguous and reading a policy is terribly boring. Shown next are the usual coverages found on the average car insurance policy.
Medical payments coverage and PIP – Med pay and PIP coverage reimburse you for expenses for prosthetic devices, ambulance fees and X-ray expenses. They are often used in conjunction with a health insurance program or if there is no health insurance coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants and also covers any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP is only offered in select states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Collision – This covers damage to your Esteem resulting from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision can pay for things like sideswiping another vehicle, scraping a guard rail and colliding with a tree. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are older. Another option is to bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage provides protection when the “other guys” are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. It can pay for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as damage to your 1996 Suzuki Esteem.
Since a lot of drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Usually these limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Comprehensive coverage – This pays to fix your vehicle from damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You need to pay your deductible first and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as falling objects, theft, damage from getting keyed, rock chips in glass and hitting a deer. The most your car insurance company will pay is the market value of your vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Coverage for liability – This coverage will cover damages or injuries you inflict on other people or property by causing an accident. It protects you against other people’s claims. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have policy limits of 50/100/50 that means you have $50,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $100,000, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Alternatively, you may have one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability coverage protects against things like pain and suffering, bail bonds, structural damage, repair costs for stationary objects and court costs. How much liability should you purchase? That is your choice, but consider buying as much as you can afford.
