Trying to find the cheapest insurance coverage rates for your Volkswagen Passat? Tired of sacrificing to keep your car insured? You have the same problem as most other consumers. Lots of car insurance companies contend for your insurance dollar, and it can be difficult to compare rates to find the lowest rate possible.
The best way to compare policy rates is to realize all the major auto insurance companies participate in online systems to compare their rates. To get started, all you need to do is give them rating details including level of coverage desired, whether you have decent credit, driver ages, and if you are currently licensed. The rating information is automatically sent to multiple different insurance companies and you should receive rate quotes almost instantly.
Discount insurance rates
Insurance is easily one of your largest bills, but there could be significant discounts that can help lower your rates. Some discounts apply automatically when you purchase, but some need to be asked about before you will receive the discount.
- Payment Method – If you pay your bill all at once instead of monthly or quarterly installments you could save 5% or more.
- Multi-Vehicle Discounts – Purchasing coverage when you have multiple cars with one company can reduce the rates for all insured vehicles.
- Savings for New Vehicles – Insuring a vehicle that is new can be considerably cheaper because newer vehicles are generally safer.
- ABS Brakes – Anti-lock brake equipped vehicles can reduce accidents and the ABS can save up to 10%.
- Student in College – Kids who are attending college and do not have access to a covered vehicle could get you a discount.
- Active Service Discounts – Being on active deployment in the military could qualify you for better insurance rates.
- Responsible Driver Discounts – Drivers without accidents could pay up to 40% less on Passat coverage compared to accident prone drivers.
- Data Collection Discounts – Drivers that enable companies to monitor when and where they use their vehicle by using a telematics device such as Progressive’s Snapshot might get better premium rates as long as the data is positive.
- Early Renewal Discounts – Some companies reward drivers for buying a new policy prior to the expiration date on your current policy. You can save around 10% with this discount.
Discounts save money, but please remember that most of the big mark downs will not be given the the whole policy. Some only apply to individual premiums such as comp or med pay. Just because it seems like it’s possible to get free car insurance, you’re out of luck.
A few popular companies and a partial list of their discounts are included below.
- 21st Century offers discounts including early bird, automatic seat belts, defensive driver, good student, and driver training.
- State Farm may include discounts for Steer Clear safe driver discount, student away at school, good driver, accident-free, good student, Drive Safe & Save, and multiple policy.
- AAA offers premium reductions for anti-theft, AAA membership discount, pay-in-full, multi-car, multi-policy, and good driver.
- Liberty Mutual includes discounts for preferred payment discount, newly married, multi-car, safety features, new graduate, and teen driver discount.
- Progressive has discounts for online signing, online quote discount, multi-vehicle, good student, multi-policy, continuous coverage, and homeowner.
When getting a coverage quote, ask all the companies which discounts you may be entitled to. Some of the discounts discussed earlier may not apply in your area. To see insurers with significant discounts, click here to view.

Tailor your insurance coverage coverage to you
When it comes to choosing the best insurance coverage coverage for your vehicles, there is no single plan that fits everyone. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs so this has to be addressed. These are some specific questions could help you determine if your situation will benefit from professional help.
- How many claims can I have before being cancelled?
- Is my dog or cat covered if injured in an accident?
- Will I lose any money if I cancel my policy before it expires?
- Am I covered if I wreck a rental car?
- I have good health insurance, so how much medical payments coverage do I need?
- What is PIP insurance?
- Is my 1997 Volkswagen Passat covered for flood damage?
- When should I buy a commercial auto policy?
- I have a DUI can I still get coverage?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but a few of them apply, you may need to chat with an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, take a second and complete this form or go to this page to view a list of companies. It’s fast, free and can help protect your family.
Specific coverage details
Having a good grasp of your policy can help you determine which coverages you need and proper limits and deductibles. Auto insurance terms can be ambiguous and nobody wants to actually read their policy. These are the normal coverages found on the average auto insurance policy.
Auto liability – This coverage provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on people or other property that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people. It does not cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. As an example, you may have policy limits of 25/50/25 which means $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $50,000 in injury protection per accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000.
Liability insurance covers things such as bail bonds, legal defense fees, structural damage and repair costs for stationary objects. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle from other drivers when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is a good idea.
Comprehensive insurance – Comprehensive insurance will pay to fix damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims like damage from getting keyed, theft, damage from a tornado or hurricane and hail damage. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Collision – Collision insurance covers damage to your Passat resulting from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision insurance covers claims like crashing into a ditch, damaging your car on a curb, colliding with a tree, hitting a parking meter and driving through your garage door. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. Another option is to raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for immediate expenses for things like dental work, nursing services, X-ray expenses and chiropractic care. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance program or if you are not covered by health insurance. Coverage applies to all vehicle occupants and also covers getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not an option in every state and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
