No one in their right mind likes having to buy car insurance, especially when they could find better rates elsewhere.
Companies like Progressive, Geico and Farmers Insurance continually bombard you with ads and it can be hard to see through the deception and take the time to shop coverage around.
It’s a great practice to compare premium rates quite often because prices change quite often. Even if you got the lowest rates on Accent coverage a couple years back you may be paying too much now. Don’t believe everything you read about car insurance on the internet, but I’m going to show you some of the best techniques to lower your car insurance premiums.
Low cost auto insurance
There are a variety of methods to shop for auto insurance, and some are easier and takes less work. You could waste time talking to insurance companies in your area, or you can utilize the web to get pricing more quickly.
Most major companies participate in an industry program that allows shoppers to only type in their quote data once, and every company then returns a price quote. This saves time by eliminating form submissions for every auto insurance company.
To enter your information into the quoting system, click to open in new window.
The only drawback to using this type of form is buyers cannot specifically choose which carriers to get quotes from. So if you prefer to choose specific insurance companies to compare rates, we have a listing of companies who write auto insurance in your area. View list of insurance companies.
It’s up to you which method you use, but ensure you’re using the exact same coverage limits and deductibles for each quote you get. If you enter mixed coverages it will be nearly impossible to determine the best price for your Hyundai Accent. Just a small difference in insurance coverages or limits could skew the results. And when price shopping your coverage, comparing more quotes helps you find a better price. Some regional insurers cannot provide price estimates online, so it’s important to compare prices from them as well.

These discounts can slash insurance rates
Some insurers don’t necessarily list all their discounts in an easy-to-find place, so the following is a list of both the well known and the more hidden discounts you could be receiving when you buy insurance coverage online.
- Discount for Life Insurance – Select insurance companies reward you with lower rates if you buy some life insurance too.
- No Claims – Drivers with accident-free driving histories can earn big discounts in comparison with accident-prone drivers.
- Drive Less and Save – Fewer annual miles on your Hyundai may enable drivers to earn substantially lower insurancerates.
- Home Ownership Discount – Simply owning a home can save a few bucks because owning a home is proof that your finances are in order.
- Discounts for Government Workers – Federal government employees could qualify for a slight premium decrease on Accent coverage with some insurance companies.
- Multi-policy Discount – If you have multiple policies and insure them both with the same insurance company you may save 10% to 20% off each policy.
A quick disclaimer, most discount credits are not given the the whole policy. Most only reduce the price of certain insurance coverages like medical payments or collision. So despite the fact that it appears you could get a free insurance policy, companies don’t profit that way.
A partial list of companies that possibly offer some of the above discounts possibly include:

When do I need an agent’s advice?
When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is no best way to insure your cars. Everyone’s situation is a little different and your policy should reflect that. For example, these questions could help you determine whether you may require specific advice.
- Does insurance cover damages from a DUI accident?
- What is the difference between comprehensive and collision coverage?
- Am I missing any policy discounts?
- Are my friends covered when driving my car?
- How can I get my company to pay me more for my totalled car?
- Does my policy cover me when driving someone else’s vehicle?
- What companies insure drivers after a DUI or DWI?
- Should I waive the damage coverage when renting a car?
- Are my friends covered when driving my 1999 Hyundai Accent?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you may need to chat with a licensed insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out this quick form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.
Coverages available on your policy
Knowing the specifics of your policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage and proper limits and deductibles. Car insurance terms can be ambiguous and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Shown next are the usual coverages offered by car insurance companies.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
This coverage protects you and your vehicle from other drivers when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. It can pay for injuries to you and your family as well as damage to your Hyundai Accent.
Because many people have only the minimum liability required by law, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is a good idea. Usually the UM/UIM limits are set the same as your liablity limits.
Collision coverage
Collision coverage pays for damage to your Accent from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision can pay for things like colliding with another moving vehicle, crashing into a building, hitting a mailbox, sideswiping another vehicle and damaging your car on a curb. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Another option is to bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Liability auto insurance
This protects you from damage that occurs to other people or property. This coverage protects you from legal claims by others. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show policy limits of 25/50/25 which stand for a $25,000 limit per person for injuries, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a total limit of $25,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Occasionally you may see a combined single limit or CSL which limits claims to one amount rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as funeral expenses, bail bonds, loss of income and attorney fees. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive insurance coverage covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You need to pay your deductible first and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims like a broken windshield, hitting a bird, damage from flooding, hitting a deer and fire damage. The maximum payout your car insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Medical payments coverage and PIP
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP kick in for expenses for ambulance fees, X-ray expenses, surgery and hospital visits. They can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover all vehicle occupants as well as if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not universally available and may carry a deductible
