Locating low-cost insurance for a new or used Volvo V70 can be difficult, but you can use the following methods to make it easier.
There is a better way to shop for insurance so you’re going to learn the quickest way to compare rates on a Volvo and locate the lowest possible price from local insurance agents and online providers.
Compare free insurance quotes
Comparing insurance rates can be a lot of work if you don’t know the easiest way. You can spend your afternoon talking about coverages with local insurance agents in your area, or you could use the internet to quickly compare rates.
Many companies belong to an insurance system where prospective buyers send in one quote, and every company returns a competitive quote based on that information. This saves time by eliminating repetitive form submissions for every insurance company.
To participate in this free quote system, click here (opens in new window).
One minor caviat to using this type of system is you can’t choose which providers you want pricing from. If you wish to select specific providers for rate comparison, we have a page of insurance companies in your area. View list of insurance companies.
Which method you use is up to you, but be certain you are entering nearly identical coverages with every price quote. If your comparisons have different data you will not be able to get a fair rate comparison.

Pay discount rates with these five discounts
Auto insurance is expensive, but you can get discounts to cut the cost considerably. Some of these disounts will be visible when you purchase, but less common discounts must be specially asked for before you get the savings.
- Defensive Driver – Taking a class that teaches defensive driving techniques could save 5% or more if you qualify.
- No Charge for an Accident – This one isn’t a discount, but companies like Geico and Liberty Mutual permit an accident before they charge you more for coverage so long as you are claim-free prior to the accident.
- Auto/Home Discount – If you can bundle your auto and home insurance with the same insurance company you could save 10% to 20% off each policy.
- More Vehicles More Savings – Buying a policy with multiple vehicles on a single policy can get a discount on all vehicles.
- Discount for Good Grades – Getting good grades can earn a discount of 20% or more. The discount lasts up to age 25.
It’s important to understand that some credits don’t apply to the entire cost. Most only apply to individual premiums such as comp or med pay. Even though it may seem like having all the discounts means you get insurance for free, companies don’t profit that way.
A few of the larger companies and some of the premium reductions they offer are included below.
- The Hartford has savings for bundle, anti-theft, defensive driver, air bag, and good student.
- American Family offers discounts for good driver, air bags, early bird, defensive driver, and TimeAway discount.
- Progressive policyholders can earn discounts including multi-vehicle, homeowner, multi-policy, continuous coverage, online quote discount, and online signing.
- Travelers offers premium reductions for early quote, IntelliDrive, good student, home ownership, and new car.
- Farmers Insurance may have discounts that include mature driver, homeowner, bundle discounts, good student, teen driver, and early shopping.
- USAA discounts include good student, multi-policy, safe driver, loyalty savings, and annual mileage.
- Liberty Mutual offers discounts including new vehicle discount, good student, newly married, new move discount, and teen driver discount.
Double check with all the companies to apply every possible discount. Some of the earlier mentioned discounts may not apply to policyholders in every state. To view providers that have a full spectrum of discounts, follow this link.
Your situation helps dictate your coverage
When choosing proper insurance coverage for your vehicles, there isn’t really a best way to insure your cars. Everyone’s needs are different.
These are some specific questions might help in determining if you would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- Is pleasure use cheaper than using my 1999 Volvo V70 to commute?
- What is UM/UIM insurance?
- Is motorclub coverage worth it?
- Is my dog or cat covered if injured in an accident?
- Is my Volvo V70 covered if I use it for business?
- Can I drive in Mexico and have coverage?
- Why does it cost so much to insure a teen driver?
- How does medical payments coverage work?
- Is my trailer covered?
- I have health insurance so do I need medical payments coverage?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, complete this form. It’s fast, free and can help protect your family.
Advertising and insurance
Drivers can’t avoid all the ads that claim the cheapest prices by State Farm, Allstate and Geico. All the companies say the same thing about saving some big amount after switching to their company.
Is it even possible that every company can give you a lower rate? This is the trick they use.
Companies quote the lowest rates for the type of insured that makes them money. An example of this type of risk profile might be over the age of 50, has a clean driving record, and drives a car with an anti-theft system. Any new insured who fits that profile will get the preferred prices and is almost guaranteed to save if they switch.
Insureds who don’t meet this ideal profile will get a higher rate and the driver buying from a lower-cost company. The ad wording is “customers who switch” but not “everyone who gets a quote” will save that much if they switch. This is how companies can lure you into getting a quote.
This really illustrates why drivers must compare price quotes frequently. It’s not possible to predict which insurance companies will have the lowest rate quotes.

Insurance policy coverages for a 1999 Volvo V70
Having a good grasp of insurance can be of help when determining the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. The terms used in a policy can be difficult to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive insurance pays for damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive can pay for claims like hitting a deer, damage from getting keyed and hail damage. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider dropping full coverage.
Medical payments coverage and PIP
Med pay and PIP coverage provide coverage for bills like surgery, ambulance fees and pain medications. The coverages can be utilized in addition to your health insurance plan or if you do not have health coverage. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage gives you protection from other drivers when they do not carry enough liability coverage. This coverage pays for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Because many people carry very low liability coverage limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Most of the time these coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Collision protection
Collision coverage covers damage to your V70 caused by collision with an object or car. A deductible applies then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision can pay for things like sustaining damage from a pot hole, crashing into a building, rolling your car, colliding with a tree and damaging your car on a curb. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from older vehicles. Another option is to increase the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Coverage for liability
This coverage protects you from damage or injury you incur to other people or property. Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have liability limits of 50/100/50 which means a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Occasionally you may see one number which is a combined single limit which limits claims to one amount without having the split limit caps.
Liability insurance covers things such as attorney fees, repair costs for stationary objects, emergency aid, court costs and legal defense fees. How much coverage you buy is a decision to put some thought into, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.
Do the work, save more money
People leave their current company for any number of reasons including delays in paying claims, not issuing a premium refund, denial of a claim or even extreme rates for teen drivers. Regardless of your reason for switching companies, switching companies is pretty simple and you could end up saving a buck or two.
Some insurance coverage companies do not offer online quoting and many times these regional carriers work with independent agents. Lower-priced insurance coverage can be bought online as well as from insurance agents, so you need to compare both to have the best chance of lowering rates.
When shopping online for insurance coverage, you should never buy lower coverage limits just to save a few bucks. There are many occasions where an insured cut comprehensive coverage or liability limits and learned later that the small savings ended up costing them much more. Your goal is to buy the best coverage you can find for the lowest cost.
