Having to pay for expensive insurance can dry up your family’s budget and force you to prioritize other expenses. Multiple car insurance companies compete for your hard-earned dollar, and it can be difficult to compare rates to find the best price available.
If you have a policy now or are just looking to switch companies, you can follow these tips to get lower rates while maintaining coverages. Finding affordable coverage is easy if you know what you’re doing. Vehicle owners only need to know the proper methods to shop their coverage around online.
Finding insurance coverage
Shopping for lower insurance coverage rates can take time and effort if you don’t utilize the fastest way to get free quotes. You can waste hours talking about coverages with agents in your area, or you could use online quotes to accomplish the same thing much quicker.
Many of the larger companies take part in a program that allows shoppers to enter their policy data once, and each participating company then returns a price quote based on that information. This saves time by eliminating quote forms for every insurance coverage company.
To fill out one form to compare multiple rates now click to open in new window.
The single downside to comparing rates this way is you don’t know exactly which carriers you want pricing from. So if you want to select individual companies to receive pricing from, we have a page of the cheapest insurance coverage companies in your area. View list of insurance companies.
How you compare quotes is your choice, just make sure you are using the same coverage information with every price quote. If each company quotes different liability limits you can’t possibly determine which company has the best rates.

These discounts can lower your auto insurance quotes
Car insurance companies do not list every discount they offer very clearly, so the following is a list of some of the more common and the harder-to-find credits available to lower your premiums when you buy insurance online.
- Multiple Policy Discount – If you combine your auto and homeowners policies and insure them with the same company you could earn a discount of up to 20% and get you inexpensive insurance.
- Use Seat Belts – Using a seat belt and requiring all passengers to wear their seat belts can save up to 10 percent (depending on the company) on the premium charged for medical payments and/or PIP.
- Military Rewards – Having a deployed family member may lower your auto insurance rates slightly.
- Good Student – A discount for being a good student may save you up to 25%. The discount lasts until age 25.
- Online Discount – Many insurance companies will give a small break shop insurance on your computer.
- First Accident Forgiveness – This isn’t a discount exactly, but companies like State Farm, Progressive and Geico will allow you to have one accident without the usual rate increase if your claims history is clear for a particular time prior to the accident.
- ABS and Traction Control Discounts – Cars and trucks with ABS braking systems or traction control can reduce accidents and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
- Pay Upfront and Save – By paying your entire bill at once rather than paying monthly you may reduce your total bill.
- Auto/Life Discount – Companies who offer life insurance give lower prices if you buy life insurance.
- Membership in Organizations – Participating in a qualifying organization is a good way to get lower rates on your next auto insurance statement.
As is typical with insurance, most discount credits are not given to the overall cost of the policy. Most only apply to the cost of specific coverages such as comp or med pay. So even though you would think you could get a free auto insurance policy, you aren’t that lucky.
Popular auto insurance companies and some of their more popular discounts can be found below.
- Progressive has discounts for multi-vehicle, online quote discount, online signing, continuous coverage, and multi-policy.
- The Hartford offers premium reductions for air bag, driver training, defensive driver, bundle, and good student.
- Mercury Insurance may have discounts that include good driver, age of vehicle, accident-free, type of vehicle, and good student.
- Geico may offer discounts for daytime running lights, good student, membership and employees, federal employee, anti-lock brakes, and five-year accident-free.
- AAA discounts include good student, multi-car, anti-theft, good driver, multi-policy, and AAA membership discount.
- State Farm includes discounts for safe vehicle, Drive Safe & Save, good student, student away at school, and passive restraint.
When comparing rates, check with every company to apply every possible discount. Some of the discounts discussed earlier may not be available in your area. To see a list of providers who offer online auto insurance quotes, follow this link.
Different people need different auto insurance coverages
When it comes to choosing coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no one size fits all plan. Every situation is different and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. For example, these questions can aid in determining whether you would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- Is my ex-spouse still covered by my policy?
- Does my policy pay for OEM or aftermarket parts?
- Does car insurance cover theft of personal property?
- Am I better off with higher deductibles on my 2000 Ford Escort?
- If my pet gets injured in an accident are they covered?
- Do I need medical payments coverage since I have good health insurance?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions, then you may want to think about talking to a licensed agent. To find an agent in your area, fill out this quick form or you can also visit this page to select a carrier It is quick, free and may give you better protection.
Detailed coverages of your insurance policy
Understanding the coverages of your policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage for your vehicles. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement. Below you’ll find the usual coverages offered by insurance companies.
Collision coverage protection
Collision coverage pays for damage to your Escort from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage protects against things such as damaging your car on a curb, hitting a mailbox and colliding with another moving vehicle. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. Drivers also have the option to increase the deductible to bring the cost down.
Liability coverage
This provides protection from damage or injury you incur to a person or their property. It protects you against claims from other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You commonly see values of 25/50/25 which stand for $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and $25,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Alternatively, you may have one limit called combined single limit (CSL) that pays claims from the same limit without having the split limit caps.
Liability insurance covers things such as repair costs for stationary objects, legal defense fees and structural damage. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a decision to put some thought into, but consider buying as large an amount as possible.
Comprehensive (Other than Collision)
This pays for damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You need to pay your deductible first and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for claims such as damage from flooding, damage from a tornado or hurricane and hitting a bird. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider dropping full coverage.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers
This gives you protection from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include injuries to you and your family and also any damage incurred to your Ford Escort.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is very important. Usually these limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Medical expense insurance
Med pay and PIP coverage reimburse you for short-term medical expenses such as funeral costs, dental work, pain medications and EMT expenses. They can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available and may carry a deductible

One last thing about your coverage
While you’re price shopping online, you should never skimp on critical coverages to save a buck or two. There are too many instances where someone dropped physical damage coverage and learned later that it was a big mistake. Your aim should be to buy the best coverage you can find at the best cost.
Cheaper auto insurance can be bought from both online companies in addition to many insurance agents, so get free insurance quotes from both of them to get a complete price analysis. There are still a few companies who may not offer online rate quotes and usually these regional insurance providers work with local independent agencies.
