Ignore everything you know about insurance because I’m going to teach you the best way to save money, get proper coverage and the best rates.
If you have a current car insurance policy or need new coverage, you can learn to reduce the price you pay and possibly find even better coverage. Pricing affordable car insurance coverage is simple if you know the tricks. Consumers just need to learn how to compare rates online.
How to lower your auto insurance cost
Comparing auto insurance rates can be a daunting task if you don’t know the most efficient way to do it. You could waste time talking about coverages with local insurance agents in your area, or you can stay home and use online quoting to get pricing more quickly.
Many companies participate in an industry program where insurance shoppers enter their policy data once, and every company then gives them pricing for coverage. This eliminates the need for quotation requests for each company.

The one downside to comparing rates this way is you cannot specify which providers to get quotes from. So if you prefer to choose specific insurance companies to compare prices, we have a listing of auto insurance companies in your area. Click to view list.
The method you choose is up to you, but be sure to compare exactly the same coverage limits with each company. If you have different data then you won’t be able to determine the lowest rate for your Toyota MR2 Spyder.

Auto insurance is unique, just like you
When it comes to choosing coverage for your vehicles, there really is not a “best” method to buy coverage. Your needs are not the same as everyone else’s.
These are some specific questions may help highlight whether you may require specific advice.
- Is business property covered if stolen from my car?
- Should I sign the liability waiver when renting a car?
- Is upholstery damage covered by car insurance?
- I have a DUI can I still get coverage?
- Does coverage extend to a rental car in a foreign country?
- Do I need to file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
- Should I buy more coverage than the required minimum liability coverage?
- Can I afford low physical damage deductibles?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but one or more may apply to you, you might consider talking to an agent. To find an agent in your area, complete this form. It’s fast, doesn’t cost anything and can provide invaluable advice.
Coverages available on your policy
Having a good grasp of your auto insurance policy helps when choosing which coverages you need at the best deductibles and correct limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Medical expense insurance – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance provide coverage for bills for dental work, chiropractic care, prosthetic devices and nursing services. The coverages can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover both the driver and occupants and also covers any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal injury protection coverage is only offered in select states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers – This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other drivers when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for hospital bills for your injuries as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea. Most of the time these limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Coverage for liability – Liability coverage will cover damage or injury you incur to other’s property or people by causing an accident. This insurance protects YOU against other people’s claims. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You might see policy limits of 50/100/50 which stand for a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a limit of $50,000 paid for damaged property. Alternatively, you may have a combined single limit or CSL which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for things such as pain and suffering, attorney fees and medical expenses. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but buy as large an amount as possible.
Collision – This pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. You first must pay a deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision can pay for things such as rolling your car, colliding with another moving vehicle, sideswiping another vehicle, crashing into a ditch and sustaining damage from a pot hole. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. You can also raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Comprehensive (Other than Collision) – Comprehensive insurance covers damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against things like falling objects, a broken windshield, hitting a deer and vandalism. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider removing comprehensive coverage.
