Feel like you have overpriced insurance? Say no more because many consumers are feeling buyer’s remorse and feel like there’s no way out. People have multiple auto insurance companies to pick from, and even though it’s nice to have multiple companies, it makes it harder to get the best deal.
The best way to compare car insurance company rates is to take advantage of the fact most larger insurance companies allow for online access to give you rate quotes. The one thing you need to do is spend a couple of minutes providing details including what your job is, if you’re married, whether your vehicle is owned or leased, and distance driven. Your insurance information is then sent to insurance companies and they return rate quotes almost instantly.
When do I need an agent’s advice?
When choosing proper insurance coverage, there isn’t really a single plan that fits everyone. Everyone’s needs are different so this has to be addressed. For instance, these questions might help in determining whether your personal situation would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- How high should my uninsured/underinsured coverage be in my state?
- Does my liability insurance cover pulling a trailer or camper?
- Is my state a no-fault state?
- Should I rate my 2001 GMC Yukon as pleasure use or commute?
- Does my policy pay for OEM or aftermarket parts?
- Does insurance cover tools stolen from my truck?
- Does my policy cover my teen driver if they drive my company car?
- How much liability coverage do I need in my state?
- When would I need additional glass coverage?
- Does insurance cover damages from a DUI accident?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out this quick form or go to this page to view a list of companies. It’s fast, doesn’t cost anything and you can get the answers you need.

What auto insurance coverages do you need?
Understanding the coverages of your auto insurance policy can be of help when determining the right coverages and proper limits and deductibles. The terms used in a policy can be confusing and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Below you’ll find the usual coverages found on most auto insurance policies.
Auto liability
This coverage provides protection from damage or injury you incur to people or other property. It protects YOU from legal claims by others, and does not provide coverage for your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show liability limits of 50/100/50 that means you have a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Alternatively, you may have one number which is a combined single limit which provides one coverage limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability can pay for claims such as legal defense fees, repair bills for other people’s vehicles, structural damage and funeral expenses. How much liability coverage do you need? That is up to you, but consider buying as much as you can afford.
UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage
This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when the “other guys” are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is very important. Usually your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Comprehensive auto coverage
Comprehensive insurance coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first have to pay a deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims such as theft, damage from a tornado or hurricane, hitting a deer, rock chips in glass and hail damage. The maximum amount a auto insurance company will pay at claim time is the ACV or actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Collision coverage protection
Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from a collision with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision insurance covers claims like colliding with another moving vehicle, scraping a guard rail, hitting a mailbox, hitting a parking meter and sideswiping another vehicle. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. Drivers also have the option to increase the deductible to bring the cost down.
Medical payments and PIP coverage
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance kick in for bills like dental work, funeral costs and X-ray expenses. They are utilized in addition to your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP is not available in all states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
