No normal person looks forward to paying premiums for car insurance, especially when they know they could lower their rates if they shopped around. Online insurance companies like Geico and Progressive persitently shower you with ads and it is difficult to see through the cute green geckos and mayhem and take the time to shop coverage around.
If you are insured now or need new coverage, you can use this information to cut your premiums while maximizing coverage. Finding affordable coverage is quite easy. Vehicle owners just need to understand the proper methods to compare price quotes over the internet.
Buy insurance online
There are multiple methods you can shop for insurance and some are less labor-intensive and much quicker. You can waste a lot of time talking about coverages with insurance companies in your area, or you could save time and use the web to get the quickest rates.
The majority of car insurance companies belong to an insurance system where prospective buyers complete one form, and every company then returns a price quote based on the submitted data. This eliminates the need for repetitive form submissions to each individual insurance company.

The single downside to getting quotes like this is you are unable to specify which companies you will receive quotes from. If you prefer to choose individual companies to compare, we have a listing of the cheapest insurance companies in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.
Take whichever approach you prefer, but ensure you are comparing identical coverage limits and deductibles for each price quote. If each company quotes different liability limits then you won’t be able to determine which company has the best rates.

Find hidden discounts to get affordable auto insurance rates
Some insurers do not list the complete list of policy discounts very clearly, so we break down some of the best known in addition to some of the lesser obvious ways to save on auto insurance.
- Federal Government Employee – Employees or retirees of the government can earn a discount up to 10% for Accord coverage but check with your company.
- College Student – Older children who are attending college without a vehicle on campus may qualify for this discount.
- First Accident Forgiveness – This one is not really a discount per se, but companies like Allstate, Progressive, and Geico permit an accident before raising your premiums with the catch being you have to be claim-free before the accident.
- Passive Restraints and Air Bags – Vehicles with factory air bags can receive discounts of 20 to 30 percent.
- Military Rewards – Being deployed in the military could be rewarded with lower premium rates.
One thing to note about discounts is that some credits don’t apply to all coverage premiums. Some only reduce the cost of specific coverages such as medical payments or collision. If you do the math and it seems like all those discounts means the company will pay you, you’re out of luck.
A list of auto insurance companies and a summarized list of policyholder discounts are detailed below.
- Geico has savings for multi-policy, five-year accident-free, seat belt use, good student, emergency military deployment, and federal employee.
- Mercury Insurance has discounts for location of vehicle, annual mileage, anti-theft, good driver, low natural disaster claims, and age of vehicle.
- Farmers Insurance policyholders can earn discounts including teen driver, alternative fuel, pay in full, good student, early shopping, and electronic funds transfer.
- Auto-Owners Insurance discounts include paid in full, mature driver, multiple vehicles, multi-policy, and safe driver.
- Liberty Mutual may have discounts that include new move discount, safety features, multi-car, newly married, and hybrid vehicle.
- SAFECO includes discounts for anti-lock brakes, accident prevention training, multi-car, bundle discounts, teen safe driver, homeowner, and anti-theft.
- Progressive may offer discounts for multi-policy, homeowner, good student, multi-vehicle, online quote discount, online signing, and continuous coverage.
- USAA may include discounts for loyalty savings, driver training, multi-policy, good student, new vehicle, safe driver, and military installation.
Double check with each insurance company how many discounts you can get. All car insurance discounts may not be available in your state.
Tailor your auto insurance coverage to you
When choosing the best auto insurance coverage, there is no “perfect” insurance plan. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs so this has to be addressed. For instance, these questions may help you determine whether your personal situation could use an agent’s help.
- Can my teen drive my company car?
- Why am I required to buy high-risk coverage?
- When should I remove comp and collision on my 2001 Honda Accord?
- Is my babysitter covered when using my vehicle?
- Are split liability limits better than a combined single limit?
- Why is insurance for a teen driver so high?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you may need to chat with a licensed agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form or you can also visit this page to select a carrier It only takes a few minutes and may give you better protection.
Auto insurance coverage breakdown
Understanding the coverages of your auto insurance policy aids in choosing the best coverages and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be confusing and coverage can change by endorsement. Shown next are the usual coverages offered by auto insurance companies.
Medical expense insurance
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance reimburse you for bills such as EMT expenses, dental work, ambulance fees, nursing services and pain medications. They are utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP is not universally available and may carry a deductible
Liability
Liability coverage will cover damage that occurs to other’s property or people. It protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You commonly see liability limits of 50/100/50 that translate to a $50,000 limit per person for injuries, $100,000 for the entire accident, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property.
Liability coverage protects against claims such as legal defense fees, bail bonds, loss of income and repair costs for stationary objects. How much liability coverage do you need? That is your choice, but you should buy as high a limit as you can afford.
Comprehensive (Other than Collision)
This pays for damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You need to pay your deductible first then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like a tree branch falling on your vehicle, rock chips in glass and vandalism. The highest amount you’ll receive from a claim is the actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Collision coverage
This coverage will pay to fix damage to your Accord resulting from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision coverage pays for things such as colliding with a tree, sideswiping another vehicle, driving through your garage door, hitting a mailbox and damaging your car on a curb. This coverage can be expensive, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers
This gives you protection when the “other guys” do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Because many people carry very low liability coverage limits, their limits can quickly be used up. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages should not be overlooked.
