Comparison shopping for cheap auto insurance can seem to be a challenge for drivers not familiar with online rate comparisons. Consumers have so many agents and companies to choose from that it can easily become hard work to find cheaper prices.
Which insurance is cheapest?
When shopping for insurance there are multiple ways to compare rate quotes from many available insurance companies in your state. The recommended way to comparison shop is to get quotes online. It’s really quite simple and can be done by using one of the methods below.
- The most efficient way to get quotes would be an industry-wide quote request form like this one (opens in new window). This quick form saves time by eliminating boring form submissions for every insurance company. Just one form gets prices estimates from insurance companies with the best prices. It’s definitely the quickest method.
- A less efficient way to analyze rates is spending the time to visit the website of each company and go through the quote process again. For instance, let’s say you are doing a rate comparison from Liberty Mutual, Farmers and GMAC. You would have to spend time on each company’s site and enter your policy data, which can be really labor intensive.

You can use whichever method you prefer to find lower rates, just compare the exact same coverages and limits on every quote. If you are comparing higher or lower deductibles it will be nearly impossible to make an equal comparison. Slightly different insurance coverages or limits can mean a large discrepancy in price. And when quoting insurance, remember that comparing all the rates in your area gives you a better chance of getting a lower rate than you’re paying now. Not every company does online price quotes, so you should also compare quotes from the smaller companies as well.

Take policy discounts and save
Car insurance companies don’t necessarily list every discount they offer very well, so here is a list a few of the more common as well as some of the hidden car insurance savings. If you check and find you aren’t receiving every discount you qualify for, you could be paying more than you need to.
- Good Grades Discount – Performing well in school can earn a discount of 20% or more. The discount lasts up to age 25.
- Save over 55 – If you’re over the age of 55, you are able to get better car insurance rates on S2000 coverage.
- Active Military Service – Having an actively deployed family member could qualify you for better premium rates.
- Bundled Policy Discount – When you combine your auto and homeowners insurance and insure them with the same company you could earn a discount of at least 10% off all policies.
- Accident Forgiveness Coverage – This one isn’t a discount, but a few companies such as Allstate and Geico permit an accident before hitting you with a surcharge if your claims history is clear for a set time period.
One last thing about discounts, many deductions do not apply to all coverage premiums. Some only reduce the cost of specific coverages such as liability and collision coverage. So even though they make it sound like you can get free auto insurance, it just doesn’t work that way.
Insurance companies that may have these money-saving discounts include:
Check with each company how you can save money. Depending on the company, some discounts may not apply to policyholders in your state. To choose providers who offer car insurance discounts, click here.
Which policy gives me the best coverage?
When buying proper insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is not a “perfect” insurance plan. Everyone’s needs are different.
For example, these questions may help highlight whether you could use an agent’s help.
- Do I pay less for low miles?
- Why am I required to get a high-risk car insurance policy?
- Am I insured when driving a different vehicle?
- Does insurance cover damages from a DUI accident?
- How much liability insurance is required?
- Does coverage extend to Mexico or Canada?
- When should I buy a commercial auto policy?
- When should I not file a claim?
If you’re not sure about those questions but one or more may apply to you, then you may want to think about talking to a licensed insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, complete this form.
Insurance coverage options for a 2001 Honda S2000
Understanding the coverages of your policy can help you determine which coverages you need and proper limits and deductibles. The coverage terms in a policy can be difficult to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Comprehensive coverages
This coverage will pay to fix damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first have to pay a deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like a broken windshield, theft, fire damage and a tree branch falling on your vehicle. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Uninsured and underinsured coverage
Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. This coverage pays for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Due to the fact that many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their limits can quickly be used up. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea.
Liability auto insurance
This protects you from damage that occurs to other people or property in an accident. This insurance protects YOU against other people’s claims, and doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You commonly see liability limits of 25/50/25 which means $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property.
Liability coverage protects against claims such as court costs, loss of income, legal defense fees, repair costs for stationary objects and funeral expenses. How much liability should you purchase? That is up to you, but consider buying as high a limit as you can afford.
Coverage for medical payments
Med pay and PIP coverage pay for expenses like EMT expenses, X-ray expenses, doctor visits, pain medications and hospital visits. They are used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover you and your occupants and will also cover any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is only offered in select states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Collision insurance
This coverage pays for damage to your S2000 from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. You first must pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage protects against claims like sideswiping another vehicle, driving through your garage door and colliding with another moving vehicle. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. Drivers also have the option to bump up the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
