Having to pay for high-priced auto insurance can overdraw your budget and force you to cut corners elsewhere. Comparing cost estimates is a great way to make ends meet.
You have so many auto insurance companies to purchase coverage from, and although it’s a good thing to have a choice, having more insurers makes it harder to find the best rates.
How to buy car insurance online
Effectively comparing car insurance prices can take hours if you aren’t aware of the fastest way to get free quotes. You can waste hours driving to insurance agencies in your area, or you could use online quoting to get prices fast.
Many of the larger companies belong to an insurance system that allows shoppers to enter their policy data once, and every company can provide price quotes determined by their information. This prevents consumers from doing quote requests for every car insurance company.
To fill out one form to compare multiple rates now click to open in new window.
One minor caviat to doing it this way is buyers cannot specifically choose the insurers to receive prices from. So if you want to select from a list of companies for rate comparison, we have a page of the cheapest car insurance companies in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.
Take whichever approach you prefer, but make darn sure you compare identical coverage limits and deductibles with each company. If you compare different limits and deductibles on each one it will be very difficult to truly determine the lowest rate.

Cheap insurance quotes with discounts
Companies offering auto insurance don’t necessarily list every available discount very well, so below is a list a few of the more well known in addition to some of the lesser obvious savings tricks you should be using when you buy car insurance online. If you’re not getting every credit possible, you’re paying more than you need to.
- Professional Memberships – Joining qualifying employment or professional organizations may earn a discount on your bill.
- Senior Discount – Drivers over the age of 55 can get lower premium rates for Tundra coverage.
- Discount for Swiching Early – Select larger companies give a discount for switching companies early. Ten percent is about the average savings.
- Seat Belt Usage – Forcing all vehicle occupants to buckle their seat belts could save 15% off the personal injury premium cost.
- Life Insurance – Select insurance companies reward you with a lower insurance rate if you buy a life policy as well.
- Theft Prevention Discount – Anti-theft and alarm system equipped vehicles can help prevent theft and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
- New Vehicle Savings – Buying a new car model can get you a discount due to better safety requirements for new vehicles.
- Driving Data Discount – Drivers who elect to allow driving data submission to analyze driving manner remotely such as Allstate’s Drivewise and State Farm’s In-Drive system might see lower rates if their driving habits are good.
Don’t be surprised that some credits don’t apply to the overall cost of the policy. Some only apply to individual premiums such as liability, collision or medical payments. So when it seems like adding up those discounts means a free policy, that’s just not realistic.
Popular insurance companies and a summarized list of policyholder discounts are detailed below.
- State Farm may offer discounts for Steer Clear safe driver discount, driver’s education, good student, safe vehicle, and passive restraint.
- Geico may have discounts that include military active duty, daytime running lights, anti-lock brakes, membership and employees, multi-policy, and five-year accident-free.
- Allstate may include discounts for passive restraint, defensive driver, eSmart discount, anti-lock brakes, auto/life discount, resident student, and utility vehicle.
- SAFECO has savings for bundle discounts, drive less, multi-car, homeowner, accident prevention training, and safe driver.
- Farm Bureau discounts include good student, driver training, safe driver, youthful driver, and renewal discount.
- Progressive offers premium reductions for continuous coverage, good student, multi-vehicle, online signing, and homeowner.
- AAA policyholders can earn discounts including good driver, multi-car, multi-policy, pay-in-full, anti-theft, and education and occupation.
When quoting, ask each company how many discounts you can get. Depending on the company, some discounts may not apply to policies in your state. To see insurers that offer the discounts shown above, follow this link.
Tailor your car insurance coverage to you
When it comes to choosing proper insurance coverage, there isn’t really a “perfect” insurance plan. Every insured’s situation is different so this has to be addressed. Here are some questions about coverages that can aid in determining if your insurance needs could use an agent’s help.
- Am I covered if hit by an uninsured driver?
- What vehicles should carry emergency assistance coverage?
- Can my teen driver be rated on a liability-only vehicle?
- Do I benefit by insuring my home with the same company?
- Will my vehicle be repaired with OEM or aftermarket parts?
- Do I need PIP coverage since I have good health insurance?
- I have a DUI can I still get coverage?
- Is my trailer covered?
- Why am I required to buy high-risk coverage?
- Is extra glass coverage worth it?
If you’re not sure about those questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out this quick form or go to this page to view a list of companies. It’s fast, free and you can get the answers you need.
Insurance coverage breakdown
Learning about specific coverages of your insurance policy helps when choosing the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. The terms used in a policy can be confusing and coverage can change by endorsement. Below you’ll find typical coverages found on most insurance policies.
Liability insurance – Liability coverage will cover damage that occurs to other’s property or people by causing an accident. This coverage protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You might see policy limits of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 bodily injury coverage, $300,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $100,000. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which limits claims to one amount without having the split limit caps.
Liability coverage pays for things like court costs, emergency aid, medical expenses, loss of income and structural damage. How much liability should you purchase? That is a decision to put some thought into, but you should buy as large an amount as possible.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle from other drivers when they do not carry enough liability coverage. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family and also any damage incurred to your Toyota Tundra.
Because many people have only the minimum liability required by law, their limits can quickly be used up. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is very important. Most of the time your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Comprehensive coverage – Comprehensive insurance pays for damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things like damage from flooding, a broken windshield, rock chips in glass, damage from getting keyed and vandalism. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Collision coverages – This coverage will pay to fix damage to your Tundra resulting from a collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision insurance covers claims such as crashing into a building, driving through your garage door and scraping a guard rail. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to raise the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Medical payments coverage and PIP – Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for expenses such as nursing services, funeral costs, X-ray expenses and surgery. They can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal injury protection coverage is only offered in select states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
