Trying to come up with a payment for high-priced auto insurance can diminish your checking account and put the squeeze on your family’s finances. Comparing rates annually can help to make sure you’re not throwing money away.
Many auto insurance companies vie to insure your vehicles, and because of this it can be hard to compare insurance companies and get the definite lowest rate
If you currently have car insurance, you will most likely be able to lower your premiums substantially using these techniques. Finding affordable coverage is easy if you know what you’re doing. Nevertheless, consumers do need to know how the larger insurance companies determine prices and apply this information to your search.
These discounts can lower insurance coverage rates
Insurance coverage is not an enjoyable expense, but you might already qualify for some discounts to cut the cost considerably. Most are applied at the time of quoting, but occassionally some discounts must be asked for before being credited.
- Switch and Save Discount – A few insurance coverage companies give discounts for signing up before your current policy expires. You may see this discount when you get insurance coverage quotes online.
- Save with More Vehicles Insured – Purchasing coverage when you have multiple cars with the same insurance coverage company can reduce rates for all insured vehicles.
- Military Deployment Discount – Having a family member in the military can result in better prices.
- Good Grades Discount – A discount for being a good student may save you up to 25%. You can use this discount normally up to age 25.
- Seat Belts Save – Buckling up and requiring all passengers to use their safety belts can save up to 15% off the medical payments premium.
- Paperwork-free – Certain insurance coverage companies will provide an incentive for buying your policy online.
As a sidenote, many deductions do not apply to the entire policy premium. Some only apply to individual premiums such as physical damage coverage or medical payments. Even though it appears all those discounts means the company will pay you, you won’t be that lucky.
Large insurance coverage companies and some of the premium reductions they offer are:
- State Farm includes discounts for student away at school, accident-free, good driver, safe vehicle, Steer Clear safe driver discount, passive restraint, and anti-theft.
- Farmers Insurance offers premium reductions for good student, homeowner, early shopping, bundle discounts, and mature driver.
- Geico policyholders can earn discounts including five-year accident-free, military active duty, multi-vehicle, federal employee, and air bags.
- American Family offers discounts including multi-vehicle, good student, air bags, TimeAway discount, early bird, and mySafetyValet.
- Nationwide may have discounts that include multi-policy, good student, family plan, defensive driving, and easy pay.
- Progressive has savings for multi-vehicle, good student, online quote discount, online signing, multi-policy, continuous coverage, and homeowner.
It’s a good idea to ask each insurance company how you can save money. Some discounts may not be available in your area. If you would like to see a list of insurance companies with significant discounts, follow this link.

Compare auto insurance rates
Performing a rate comparison can take time and effort if you don’t understand the most efficient way to do it. You can waste hours discussing policy coverages with insurance companies in your area, or you can utilize the web to achieve your goal.
Many insurance companies participate in an industry program where insurance shoppers submit their information once, and every company can provide price quotes for coverage. This eliminates the need for quotation requests to each individual auto insurance company. To fill out one form to compare multiple rates now click here to start a free quote.
The only downside to using this type of form is that consumers can’t choose which companies to get pricing from. If you would rather choose specific providers to compare, we put together a list of companies who write auto insurance in your area. View list of insurance companies.
The approach you take is up to you, just be sure you’re using the same coverages for every quote you compare. If the quotes have differing limits it will be impossible to determine the best price for your Dodge Neon. Just slight variations in coverages could mean much higher rates. And when quoting auto insurance, remember that quoting more provides better odds of finding the best rates. Some insurance companies are not set up to provide price estimates online, so it’s important to also get price estimates on coverage from those companies, too.
When do I need an agent’s advice?
When choosing proper insurance coverage for your vehicles, there isn’t really a “perfect” insurance plan. Each situation is unique and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. These are some specific questions might point out whether or not you might need professional guidance.
- Am I covered if my car is in a flood?
- Does my insurance cover my expensive audio equipment?
- How high should my uninsured/underinsured coverage be in my state?
- Do I have coverage when using my vehicle for my home business?
- Will my rates increase for filing one claim?
- How can I get my company to pay me more for my totalled car?
- Do all my vehicles need collision coverage?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you think they might apply to your situation then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, complete this form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.
Car insurance coverages 101
Understanding the coverages of your policy helps when choosing the right coverages for your vehicles. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. These are the usual coverages offered by car insurance companies.
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision
Comprehensive insurance covers damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against things like rock chips in glass, hitting a deer, a broken windshield and fire damage. The most you’ll receive from a claim is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider dropping full coverage.
UM/UIM Coverage
This protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. This coverage pays for hospital bills for your injuries and also any damage incurred to your 2004 Dodge Neon.
Since a lot of drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Most of the time these coverages do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Coverage for liability
This coverage can cover damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property by causing an accident. It protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show values of 50/100/50 which stand for $50,000 bodily injury coverage, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Occasionally you may see one number which is a combined single limit which limits claims to one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for claims like structural damage, repair bills for other people’s vehicles, bail bonds, pain and suffering and medical expenses. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but buy as large an amount as possible.
Medical costs insurance
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance provide coverage for immediate expenses such as hospital visits, dental work and ambulance fees. They can be utilized in addition to your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover both the driver and occupants and also covers if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Auto collision coverage
This coverage will pay to fix damage to your Neon resulting from a collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage pays for things like sideswiping another vehicle, sustaining damage from a pot hole, rolling your car and backing into a parked car. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Drivers also have the option to choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Make a quick buck
Budget-conscious 2004 Dodge Neon insurance can be purchased on the web and with local insurance agents, so you should be comparing quotes from both to have the best rate selection. Some insurance companies do not offer rate quotes online and these smaller companies provide coverage only through local independent agents.
As you shop your coverage around, never sacrifice coverage to reduce premiums. In many cases, someone sacrificed liability limits or collision coverage and found out when filing a claim that their decision to reduce coverage ended up costing them more. Your goal should be to buy the best coverage you can find at the best cost but still have enough coverage for asset protection.
