I can’t think of anyone who fancies paying their premiums for insurance coverage, in particular when the cost is way too high.
Multiple insurance companies compete for your business, and because of this it can be hard to compare car insurance companies and uncover the absolute best price available.
If you have car insurance now, you will most likely be able to cut costs considerably using these techniques. Buying car insurance is quite easy. But drivers must comprehend the way companies market insurance on the web because it can help you find the best coverage.
How to find cheap insurance coverage
Performing a rate comparison can be a lot of work if you don’t know the most efficient way to do it. You can waste hours talking about coverages with insurance companies in your area, or you could save time and use online quoting to get rates in a matter of minutes.
Many popular insurance companies belong to an insurance system where insurance shoppers enter their policy data once, and at least one company can provide price quotes based on that data. This system prevents you from having to do quote requests for every insurance coverage company. To enter your information into the quoting system, click here to start a free quote.
The only drawback to comparing rates this way is you are unable to specify which insurance companies to get quotes from. If you prefer to choose individual companies to request quotes from, we have assembled a list of companies who write insurance coverage in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.
The approach you take is up to you, just do your best to use exactly the same deductibles and coverage limits for each quote you get. If you are comparing different values for each quote it’s not possible to get a fair rate comparison. Even a minor difference in insurance coverages or limits could skew the results. And when comparing insurance coverage rates, know that comparing more company’s prices helps locate more affordable insurance.

Insurance coverage savings promises
State Farm, Geico and Progressive regularly use television, radio, and online ads. All the companies convey the message that you can save if you just switch your coverage. How do they all charge lower premium rates? It’s all in the numbers.
Many companies are able to cherry pick for the right customer that is profitable for them. For example, a preferred risk could possibly be between the ages of 40 and 55, has no driving citations, and drives newer vehicles. A customer that matches those criteria will probably get the lowest prices and most likely will save when they switch companies.
Drivers who don’t meet the ideal profile will be charged higher rates which usually ends up with the customer not purchasing. If you pay attention, the ads say “customers that switch” not “all people who quote” save that much when switching. That’s the way insurance companies can confidently advertise the way they do.
This really illustrates why you really should get insurance quotes from several different companies. It is impossible to predict which insurance coverage company will give you lower premium rates than your current company.
Seven factors that affect insurance costs
Many different elements are used in the calculation when pricing auto insurance. A few of the factors are predictable such as traffic violations, although others are not as apparent such as whether you are married or your commute time. The best way to find cheaper car insurance is to take a look at the different types of things that help determine car insurance rates. If you understand what positively or negatively impacts your premiums, this allows you to make good choices that will entitle you to cheaper rates.
The itemized list below are some of the most rate-impacting factors companies use to determine your rate level.
- Incidental coverages push up prices – Policies have extra bells and whistles you can purchase if you don’t pay attention. Insurance for coverage for rental cars, accident forgiveness, and motor club memberships may be costing you every month. These coverages may sound good when deciding what coverages you need, but if you’ve never needed them in the past remove them from your policy.
- Teen drivers pay higher costs – More mature drivers have been proven to be more responsible, cost insurance companies less in claims and tend to be get fewer driving tickets.Young drivers tend to be easily distracted behind the wheel therefore car insurance rates are much higher.
- Car and home together may be cheaper – Some insurers will award better rates to buyers who consolidate policies with them in the form of a multi-policy discount. The discount can be ten or even fifteen percent. Even if you’re getting this discount it’s still a good idea to comparison shop to verify if the discount is saving money.
- Higher deductibles lower costs – Physical damage protection, commonly called comprehensive (or other-than-collision) and collision coverage, protects your Scion from damage. Examples of covered claims are running into the backend of another car, flood damage, and damage from a fallen tree branch. Comp and collision deductibles are how much you are willing to pay out-of-pocket if the claim is covered. The higher the amount you choose to pay out-of-pocket, the bigger discount you will receive for xA coverage.
- Careless drivers pay higher prices – How you drive has a huge affect on how much you pay. Drivers with clean records pay lower auto insurance prices than their less careful counterparts. Getting just one moving violation can bump up the cost by as much as thirty percent. People who have license-revoking tickets such as reckless driving or DUI might be required by their state to maintain a SR-22 with their state’s department of motor vehicles in order to prevent a license revocation.
- Safer the car lower the rate – Vehicles with high crash test scores get lower rates. Highly rated vehicles reduce injuries and any reduction in injury severity means less claims paid which can result in lower premiums. If your Scion is rated at a minimum four stars on Safercar.gov you may be receiving a better rate.
- Avoid policy lapses – Not having insurance is illegal and your next policy will cost more because you let your insurance lapse. In addition to paying higher rates, failure to provide proof of insurance may result in a fine, jail time, or a revoked license. Then you may be required to submit proof of financial responsibility or a SR-22 with your state motor vehicle department.
Discount insurance quotes
Buying insurance is not cheap, but discounts can save money and there are some available to cut the cost considerably. Some discounts apply automatically when you quote, but some may not be applied and must be specially asked for prior to receiving the credit.
- Multiple Cars – Insuring more than one vehicle on one policy can get a discount on all vehicles.
- Life Insurance – Select insurance companies reward you with better premium rates if you take out auto and life insurance together.
- Drivers Ed for Students – Reduce the cost of insurance for teen drivers by having them enroll and complete driver’s education if offered at their school.
- Low Mileage Discounts – Driving less could be rewarded with lower insurancerates due to less chance of an accident.
- Mature Driver Discount – Seniors may receive a slight reduction on a insurance quote for xA coverage.
- Seat Belts Save more than Lives – Buckling up and requiring all passengers to use their safety belts can save up to 10 percent (depending on the company) on medical payment and PIP coverage.
- Home Ownership Discount – Just owning your own home may trigger a policy discount on insurance since home ownership means you have a higher level of financial diligence.
Just know that some of the credits will not apply the the whole policy. The majority will only reduce specific coverage prices like physical damage coverage or medical payments. If you do the math and it seems like you would end up receiving a 100% discount, you won’t be that lucky.
Companies and their possible discounts are:
- Geico policyholders can earn discounts including membership and employees, air bags, driver training, federal employee, and multi-vehicle.

Tailor your car insurance coverage to you
When buying coverage, there isn’t really a “perfect” insurance plan. Each situation is unique so your insurance should reflect that Here are some questions about coverages that could help you determine whether you would benefit from professional advice.
- What companies insure drivers after a DUI or DWI?
- Am I insured when driving a different vehicle?
- Can I pay claims out-of-pocket if I buy high deductibles?
- Why am I required to buy high-risk coverage?
- Do I really need UM/UIM coverage?
- Why does it cost so much to insure a teen driver?
If you’re not sure about those questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you may need to chat with an agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, fill out this quick form or click here for a list of car insurance companies in your area.
Car insurance coverages 101
Understanding the coverages of a car insurance policy can help you determine the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and reading a policy is terribly boring. Shown next are the normal coverages available from car insurance companies.
Medical payments coverage and PIP – Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for bills for things like chiropractic care, doctor visits, surgery, funeral costs and rehabilitation expenses. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not universally available and may carry a deductible
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and also any damage incurred to your Scion xA.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea. Normally these limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Comprehensive coverage – This covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. A deductible will apply and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as damage from flooding, hitting a bird, hitting a deer, fire damage and a broken windshield. The maximum payout a car insurance company will pay at claim time is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Collision – Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. You have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage pays for claims like rolling your car, driving through your garage door, damaging your car on a curb, hitting a mailbox and backing into a parked car. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Another option is to bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Liability insurance – Liability coverage protects you from injuries or damage you cause to people or other property. It protects YOU from claims by other people, and does not provide coverage for your injuries or vehicle damage.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You might see limits of 100/300/100 that translate to a limit of $100,000 per injured person, $300,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Alternatively, you may have a combined limit that pays claims from the same limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability coverage protects against claims such as repair costs for stationary objects, loss of income, emergency aid and funeral expenses. How much coverage you buy is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as high a limit as you can afford.
Find Good Coverage for Less
As you prepare to switch companies, never sacrifice coverage to reduce premiums. There have been many situations where drivers have reduced physical damage coverage and learned later that the savings was not a smart move. Your objective should be to find the BEST coverage for the lowest price and still be able to protect your assets.
We’ve covered a lot of tips how to lower your 2004 Scion xA insurance premium rates. The most important thing to understand is the more providers you compare, the better likelihood of getting affordable insurance. You may be surprised to find that the lowest premium rates come from an unexpected company. Some small companies may have significantly lower prices on certain market segments than the large multi-state companies such as Geico and State Farm.
