Insurance can get complicated
When it comes to choosing coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is no best way to insure your cars. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
For example, these questions may help highlight if your situation might need an agent’s assistance.
- Is my business laptop covered if it gets stolen from my vehicle?
- How many claims can I have before being cancelled?
- Is my Chevy Malibu covered if I use it for business?
- Will my insurance pay for OEM parts?
- Am I covered if I wreck a rental car?
- What is the minimum liability in my state?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you think they might apply to your situation then you might want to talk to an agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, fill out this quick form. It is quick, free and can provide invaluable advice.
Coverage specifics
Having a good grasp of your insurance policy can be of help when determining which coverages you need at the best deductibles and correct limits. The terms used in a policy can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – Med pay and PIP coverage reimburse you for expenses such as ambulance fees, EMT expenses, prosthetic devices and nursing services. The coverages can be utilized in addition to your health insurance plan or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers you and your occupants and also covers being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Collision coverages – This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage from colliding with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage protects against claims like colliding with another moving vehicle, hitting a parking meter, scraping a guard rail and crashing into a building. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to increase the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) – This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists do not carry enough liability coverage. It can pay for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and also any damage incurred to your Chevy Malibu.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their limits can quickly be used up. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is important protection for you and your family. Most of the time your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Liability coverage – This can cover damage or injury you incur to a person or their property by causing an accident. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. Liability doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You commonly see values of 25/50/25 which stand for a $25,000 limit per person for injuries, $50,000 for the entire accident, and a total limit of $25,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Occasionally you may see a combined single limit or CSL which combines the three limits into one amount with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability coverage protects against things such as pain and suffering, bail bonds, attorney fees and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. How much liability should you purchase? That is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.
Comprehensive insurance – Comprehensive insurance pays for damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You need to pay your deductible first then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things such as a broken windshield, vandalism, rock chips in glass, fire damage and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider dropping full coverage.
