No one rejoices having to buy insurance coverage, especially when they could get a better deal. Insurance companies such as Geico, Progressive and Allstate continually bombard you with advertising and consumers find it hard to see through the cute green geckos and mayhem and do the work needed to find the best deal.
If you are insured now or need a new policy, you will benefit by learning to get lower rates while maximizing coverage. Finding affordable coverage is not that difficult. Vehicle owners just need to understand how to find the lowest price over the internet.
Finding insurance
Effectively comparing insurance prices is a ton of work if you don’t understand the easiest way. You can waste a few hours (or days) talking to insurance agencies in your area, or you could save time and use the internet to quickly compare rates.
Many popular insurance companies are enrolled in a marketplace that allows shoppers to submit one quote, and each participating company provides a quote based on that data. This system prevents you from having to do quote forms for each company.
To use this form to compare rates click to open in new window.
The single downside to comparing rates this way is you don’t know exactly the insurers to get quotes from. If you wish to select specific providers to request quotes from, we have assembled a list of insurance companies in your area. Click here to view list.
Which method you use is up to you, but be certain you are entering apples-to-apples coverages and limits on every price quote you get. If each company quotes different coverage information it’s impossible to get a fair rate comparison.

Get lower rates with these auto insurance discounts
Companies offering auto insurance do not list every possible discount very clearly, so the list below gives a summary of a few of the more well known and the more hidden credits available to bring down your rates.
- Pay Early and Save – If you pay your entire premium ahead of time instead of paying each month you can avoid the installment charge.
- College Student – Any of your kids living away from home attending college and do not have a car can receive lower rates.
- Multi-car Discount – Insuring multiple cars or trucks on one policy can reduce rates for all insured vehicles.
- Memberships – Participating in certain professional organizations could qualify you for a break on auto insurance.
- Air Bag Discount – Factory air bags and/or automatic seat belt systems can qualify for discounts of 25 to 30%.
- Anti-theft Discount – Vehicles that have factory alarm systems and tracking devices help deter theft and that can save you a little bit as well.
- Use Seat Belts – Forcing all vehicle occupants to buckle their seat belts can save 10% or more off the PIP or medical payment premium.
- E-sign – A few larger online companies will discount your bill up to fifty bucks simply for signing on their website.
We need to note that some credits don’t apply the the whole policy. A few only apply to specific coverage prices like physical damage coverage or medical payments. Even though it appears it’s possible to get free car insurance, companies wouldn’t make money that way.
A few of the larger companies and their possible discounts can be found below.
- Geico discounts include emergency military deployment, multi-vehicle, military active duty, membership and employees, five-year accident-free, federal employee, and driver training.
- MetLife has savings for accident-free, multi-policy, defensive driver, good driver, and claim-free.
- State Farm has discounts for Steer Clear safe driver discount, defensive driving training, anti-theft, good driver, and Drive Safe & Save.
- Progressive may have discounts that include continuous coverage, multi-vehicle, multi-policy, online quote discount, and online signing.
- Mercury Insurance offers discounts including multi-car, low natural disaster claims, type of vehicle, professional/association, and good student.
- 21st Century policyholders can earn discounts including homeowners, defensive driver, anti-lock brakes, 55 and older, automatic seat belts, driver training, and teen driver.
- Allstate offers premium reductions for 55 and retired, multi-policy, senior citizen, eSmart discount, and resident student.
Check with every insurance company which discounts can lower your rates. All car insurance discounts might not be available to policyholders in your area. If you would like to choose from a list of providers with discount rates, click here to view.
Insurance can get complicated
When it comes to choosing the right insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there isn’t really a single plan that fits everyone. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. For example, these questions can aid in determining if your situation would benefit from professional advice.
- Does my 2005 GMC Savana need full coverage?
- Am I covered if I break a side mirror?
- Do all my vehicles need collision coverage?
- Should I rate my 2005 GMC Savana as pleasure use or commute?
- I don’t drive much so do I pay less?
- Am I covered if I hit my neighbor’s mailbox?
- How much underlying liability do I need for an umbrella policy?
If you can’t answer these questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, complete this form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area. It’s fast, free and can help protect your family.
Coverages available on your insurance policy
Having a good grasp of your insurance policy can help you determine the right coverages and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Listed below are typical coverage types found on most insurance policies.
Comprehensive auto coverage
Comprehensive insurance coverage covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims like damage from a tornado or hurricane, hitting a deer and fire damage. The highest amount your insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage
This coverage gives you protection when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your GMC Savana.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is a good idea. Most of the time your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Medical payments and PIP coverage
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP provide coverage for bills such as nursing services, pain medications, dental work and X-ray expenses. They are utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Liability
Liability coverage can cover damage that occurs to other’s property or people in an accident. This insurance protects YOU against other people’s claims, and doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You might see limits of 100/300/100 which stand for a limit of $100,000 per injured person, $300,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Some companies may use a combined single limit or CSL which limits claims to one amount with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability insurance covers things such as legal defense fees, funeral expenses and medical services. How much liability should you purchase? That is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.
Coverage for collisions
This coverage will pay to fix damage to your Savana from colliding with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers things such as crashing into a ditch, backing into a parked car, colliding with a tree, colliding with another moving vehicle and rolling your car. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also raise the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
