Expensive auto insurance can eat up your personal savings, especially in this economy. Performing a rate comparison can help to tighten up your finances.
Because you have many different company options, it can be challenging to pick the right company.
How to buy car insurance online
There are a variety of methods to compare car insurance quotes, but one way is easier and takes less work. You could waste time talking to agents in your area, or you could save time and use online quoting to get pricing more quickly.
Many of the larger companies belong to an insurance system that enables customers to send in one quote, and each participating company can provide price quotes determined by their information. This saves time by eliminating form submissions to each individual car insurance company.
To find out how much you’re overpaying now click here to open in new window.
One minor caviat to using this type of form is you don’t know exactly the providers you will receive quotes from. If you would rather choose specific providers to receive pricing from, we have a listing of low cost car insurance companies in your area. Click to view list.
You can use whichever method you prefer to find lower rates, just ensure you are comparing nearly identical coverage limits and deductibles with each company. If you are comparing different data you will not be able to truly determine the lowest rate.

Get affordable rates with these eight auto insurance discounts
Companies do not list the complete list of policy discounts in a way that’s easy to find, so the list below details some of the more common and the harder-to-find auto insurance savings.
- First Accident Forgiveness – This one isn’t a discount, but a handful of insurance companies allow you one accident without raising rates with the catch being you have to be claim-free before the accident.
- Sign Early and Save – A few auto insurance companies offer discounts for switching policies prior to the expiration date on your current policy. This can save 10% or more.
- Student Discounts – A discount for being a good student can be rewarded with saving of up to 25%. Many companies even apply the discount to college students up until you turn 25.
- ABS Brakes – Cars and trucks with anti-lock braking systems have fewer accidents and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
- Driver Safety – Successfully completing a safe driver course could possibly earn you a 5% discount and also improve your driving technique.
- Sign Online – A handful of companies give back up to $50 simply for signing digitally online.
- Driver’s Ed – Reduce the cost of insurance for teen drivers by having them enroll and complete driver’s education as it can save substantially.
- Full Payment Discount – If you pay your entire premium ahead of time instead of paying each month you could save 5% or more.
As a footnote on discounts, some credits don’t apply to your bottom line cost. The majority will only reduce individual premiums such as comprehensive or collision. So when it seems like you can get free auto insurance, company stockholders wouldn’t be very happy.
A few popular companies and some of the discounts are detailed below.
- Progressive includes discounts for homeowner, continuous coverage, multi-policy, online quote discount, and good student.
- Farmers Insurance offers discounts including teen driver, business and professional, good student, alternative fuel, switch companies, and pay in full.
- Farm Bureau offers premium reductions for safe driver, youthful driver, multi-vehicle, multi-policy, renewal discount, and good student.
- State Farm may have discounts that include Drive Safe & Save, driver’s education, good student, accident-free, multiple policy, multiple autos, and defensive driving training.
- Geico discounts include multi-vehicle, multi-policy, air bags, five-year accident-free, seat belt use, anti-lock brakes, and federal employee.
- SAFECO policyholders can earn discounts including homeowner, drive less, teen safety rewards, safe driver, bundle discounts, and anti-theft.
- Liberty Mutual has savings for hybrid vehicle, good student, multi-car, new move discount, and new vehicle discount.
If you are trying to find the cheapest car insurance quotes, ask every prospective company to give you their best rates. Some discounts may not apply to policyholders in every state.
Insurance can get complicated
When buying the best insurance coverage, there isn’t really a best way to insure your cars. Everyone’s needs are different and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. For instance, these questions could help you determine whether you could use an agent’s help.
- Should I have a commercial auto policy?
- How many claims can I have before being cancelled?
- Am I covered by my employer’s commercial auto policy when driving my personal car for business?
- Does having multiple vehicles earn me a discount?
- What is medical payments coverage?
- Will my rates increase for filing one claim?
- Is my custom paint covered by insurance?
- Is my 2006 Volkswagen Passat covered for flood damage?
- Does my medical payments coverage pay my health insurance deductible?
- Should I file a claim if it’s only slightly more than my deductible?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you might consider talking to a licensed insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out this quick form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area. It is quick, free and you can get the answers you need.
Auto insurance coverage specifics
Understanding the coverages of your auto insurance policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. Auto insurance terms can be confusing and reading a policy is terribly boring. Listed below are typical coverages offered by auto insurance companies.
Medical payments and PIP coverage
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for bills for things like nursing services, dental work and surgery. The coverages can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. Coverage applies to all vehicle occupants in addition to getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage gives you protection from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked. Normally these limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Collision insurance
This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers claims like crashing into a ditch, driving through your garage door, sideswiping another vehicle and hitting a parking meter. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. You can also raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Auto liability
This protects you from injuries or damage you cause to other people or property that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have values of 100/300/100 which means a limit of $100,000 per injured person, $300,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit without having the split limit caps.
Liability can pay for claims such as structural damage, medical services and emergency aid. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is up to you, but you should buy as high a limit as you can afford.
Comprehensive auto coverage
This coverage covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims like damage from getting keyed, vandalism and hitting a deer. The highest amount your auto insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Knowledge is power
We just showed you some good ideas how you can compare 2006 Volkswagen Passat insurance rates online. The key concept to understand is the more providers you compare, the better your chances of lowering your car insurance rates. Drivers may discover the most savings is with a smaller regional carrier. These companies may only write in your state and offer lower car insurance rates compared to the large companies like Progressive and Geico.
While you’re price shopping online, don’t be tempted to skimp on coverage in order to save money. In many instances, someone sacrificed comprehensive coverage or liability limits and learned later they didn’t purchase enough coverage. The goal is to purchase a proper amount of coverage for the lowest price while not skimping on critical coverages.
