Take policy discounts and save
Car insurance companies don’t list every disount available very well, so the below list has both well-publicized in addition to some of the lesser obvious discounts you could be receiving when you buy car insurance online.
- No Claim Discounts – Good drivers with no accidents have much lower rates as compared to bad drivers.
- Defensive Driver Discount – Participating in a defensive driving course can save you 5% or more if your company offers it.
- Military Deployment Discount – Having a deployed family member may lower your prices slightly.
- Drive Safe and Save – Safe drivers can pay as much as 50% less on V70 insurance than their less cautious counterparts.
- Driving Data Discount – Drivers that enable their insurance company to analyze vehicle usage by using a small device installed in their vehicle such as In-Drive from State Farm or Allstate’s Drivewise system may see discounts if they are good drivers.
- Safety Restraint Discount – Drivers who require all vehicle occupants to buckle up before driving may be able to save a few bucks on medical payment and PIP coverage.
- Early Signing – Some insurance companies provide a discount for signing up before your current expiration date. You could save around 10% when you buy car insurance online.
While discounts sound great, it’s important to understand that most discounts do not apply to your bottom line cost. A few only apply to specific coverage prices like comp or med pay. So when the math indicates you would end up receiving a 100% discount, that’s just not realistic.
A few popular companies and some of their more popular discounts are outlined below.
- American Family may offer discounts for good student, accident-free, Steer into Savings, early bird, and defensive driver.
- State Farm offers discounts for defensive driving training, Steer Clear safe driver discount, good driver, safe vehicle, Drive Safe & Save, and multiple autos.
- 21st Century offers discounts including teen driver, air bags, student driver, automatic seat belts, good student, and driver training.
- Travelers includes discounts for multi-policy, driver training, home ownership, payment discounts, multi-car, IntelliDrive, and continuous insurance.
- Geico may have discounts that include driver training, emergency military deployment, federal employee, anti-lock brakes, membership and employees, and good student.
Before purchasing a policy, check with all the companies which discounts you qualify for. Some discounts listed above might not apply in your area. If you would like to see a list of insurance companies with discount rates, click here.

Which policy gives me the best coverage?
When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage, there isn’t really a one size fits all plan. Everyone’s situation is a little different.
For instance, these questions can help discover if your situation could use an agent’s help.
- Should I waive the damage coverage when renting a car?
- Does my liability insurance cover pulling a trailer or camper?
- How does medical payments coverage work?
- Does insurance cover tools stolen from my truck?
- Does my insurance cover damage caused when ticketed for reckless driving?
- What is the ISO rating for a 2006 Volvo V70?
- What if I total my 2006 Volvo V70 and owe more than it’s worth?
If you can’t answer these questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to an agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out this quick form. It’s fast, doesn’t cost anything and may give you better protection.
Parts of your insurance policy
Understanding the coverages of a insurance policy can be of help when determining the right coverages and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.
Comprehensive coverages
Comprehensive insurance coverage covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for things such as hail damage, hitting a bird, vandalism, theft and damage from getting keyed. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Liability coverages
This can cover damage that occurs to other people or property by causing an accident. This coverage protects you against claims from other people, and does not provide coverage for damage to your own property or vehicle.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You commonly see policy limits of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a limit of $300,000 in injury protection per accident, and a total limit of $100,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Alternatively, you may have a combined single limit or CSL which combines the three limits into one amount rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability coverage protects against claims like emergency aid, bail bonds and funeral expenses. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but buy as large an amount as possible.
Collision protection
This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from a collision with another car or object. You have to pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision can pay for claims such as backing into a parked car, hitting a mailbox, colliding with a tree and scraping a guard rail. This coverage can be expensive, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. Another option is to choose a higher deductible to bring the cost down.
Uninsured and underinsured coverage
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage gives you protection when other motorists do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered claims include hospital bills for your injuries as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage should not be overlooked. Normally your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Coverage for medical payments
Med pay and PIP coverage kick in for short-term medical expenses like prosthetic devices, hospital visits and EMT expenses. The coverages can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. Coverage applies to both the driver and occupants in addition to if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP is only offered in select states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
One last thing
Drivers switch companies for any number of reasons including high prices, extreme rates for teen drivers, unfair underwriting practices and even policy non-renewal. It doesn’t matter what your reason, choosing a new insurance company can be easy and end up saving you some money.
Some insurance providers may not have the ability to get a quote online and these smaller companies prefer to sell through local independent agents. Cheaper 2006 Volvo V70 insurance can be sourced from both online companies in addition to local insurance agencies, and you need to comparison shop both to have the best chance of lowering rates.
While you’re price shopping online, it’s very important that you do not reduce coverage to reduce premium. There are many occasions where someone dropped physical damage coverage only to find out they didn’t purchase enough coverage. Your strategy should be to purchase plenty of coverage at the best possible price while not skimping on critical coverages.
