Use discounts on auto insurance
Companies that sell car insurance don’t always advertise the complete list of policy discounts in a way that’s easy to find, so the below list has some of the more common and the harder-to-find discounts that you can inquire about if you buy car insurance online.
- Passive Restraints and Air Bags – Factory options such as air bags may earn rate discounts of 20 to 30 percent.
- Telematics Discount – Insureds who allow their company to track where and when they drive by using a small device installed in their vehicle like Drivewise from Allstate or In-Drive from State Farm could save a few bucks as long as they are good drivers.
- Safety Restraint Discount – Using a seat belt and requiring all passengers to buckle their seat belts can save up to 10 percent (depending on the company) off the PIP or medical payment premium.
- Drivers Ed for Students – Cut your cost by having your teen driver successfully complete driver’s ed class if it’s offered in school.
- Low Mileage – Keeping the miles down on your Mercury could qualify for cheaper rates.
- Paperless Signup – Certain companies will give a small break for buying a policy and signing up online.
- Accident Waiver – This one is not really a discount per se, but companies like Geico and Liberty Mutual may permit one accident without raising rates if you have no claims prior to the accident.
A quick disclaimer, most credits do not apply to the overall cost of the policy. Some only reduce specific coverage prices like comp or med pay. Just because it seems like all the discounts add up to a free policy, company stockholders wouldn’t be very happy.
The best auto insurance companies and some of their more popular discounts include:
- State Farm may offer discounts for multiple autos, safe vehicle, anti-theft, passive restraint, good driver, student away at school, and Drive Safe & Save.
- Liberty Mutual policyholders can earn discounts including newly married, new graduate, multi-car, hybrid vehicle, safety features, multi-policy, and new move discount.
- American Family has discounts for bundled insurance, good student, good driver, mySafetyValet, multi-vehicle, and early bird.
- Progressive discounts include online quote discount, homeowner, multi-policy, good student, continuous coverage, and multi-vehicle.
- Farmers Insurance has savings for multi-car, youthful driver, distant student, teen driver, homeowner, and bundle discounts.
- Auto-Owners Insurance includes discounts for student away at school, teen driver, safe vehicle, good student, and anti-lock brakes.
- SAFECO offers discounts for teen safety rewards, safe driver, accident prevention training, multi-car, and anti-lock brakes.

Tailor your auto insurance coverage to you
When it comes to choosing proper insurance coverage, there is no “best” method to buy coverage. Each situation is unique so your insurance should reflect that For instance, these questions might help in determining whether you would benefit from professional advice.
- What is medical payments coverage?
- Do I need motorclub coverage?
- Why am I required to buy high-risk coverage?
- Am I covered when delivering products for my home-based business?
- Where can I find DUI or SR-22 insurance?
- Should I sign the liability waiver when renting a car?
- Do I need replacement cost coverage?
- Does my policy cover my teen driver if they drive my company car?
- When would I need additional glass coverage?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions, you may need to chat with an agent. If you don’t have a local agent, complete this form or click here for a list of auto insurance companies in your area. It is quick, free and can help protect your family.
Coverage specifics
Understanding the coverages of car insurance can help you determine which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be confusing and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Below you’ll find typical coverage types found on the average car insurance policy.
Medical expense insurance – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for immediate expenses for things like prosthetic devices, chiropractic care and surgery. They are used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance program or if there is no health insurance coverage. It covers not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants and will also cover any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not an option in every state but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Comprehensive (Other than Collision) – Comprehensive insurance pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You need to pay your deductible first and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for claims like damage from a tornado or hurricane, fire damage, hitting a deer, damage from getting keyed and vandalism. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle when the “other guys” either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family as well as damage to your Mercury Mariner.
Since a lot of drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Most of the time these limits are similar to your liability insurance amounts.
Liability – This provides protection from damage or injury you incur to other people or property. This insurance protects YOU from legal claims by others, and doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You commonly see policy limits of 25/50/25 that translate to a limit of $25,000 per injured person, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000. Another option is a combined limit which combines the three limits into one amount rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as legal defense fees, bail bonds, funeral expenses, pain and suffering and structural damage. How much coverage you buy is a decision to put some thought into, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.
Collision – This covers damage to your Mariner from colliding with an object or car. You will need to pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage pays for claims such as colliding with a tree, sustaining damage from a pot hole and rolling your car. This coverage can be expensive, so you might think about dropping it from lower value vehicles. You can also bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Affordable insurance is out there
As you prepare to switch companies, make sure you don’t reduce needed coverages to save money. There have been many situations where an accident victim reduced full coverage and found out when filing a claim they didn’t purchase enough coverage. Your goal should be to purchase plenty of coverage for the lowest price, but do not skimp to save money.
Lower-priced 2007 Mercury Mariner insurance can be found online in addition to many insurance agents, so get free car insurance quotes from both of them to get a complete price analysis. A few companies may not offer the ability to get a quote online and most of the time these smaller providers work with local independent agencies.
