Tailor your insurance coverage to you
When buying adequate coverage, there is no “perfect” insurance plan. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
For instance, these questions can aid in determining whether your personal situation would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- Should I buy additional glass protection?
- Does my personal policy cover me when driving out-of-state?
- Does my car insurance cover rental cars?
- Am I covered if I crash into my own garage door?
- What is covered by UM/UIM coverage?
- What is the minimum liability in my state?
- Does my medical payments coverage pay my health insurance deductible?
- Should I bundle my homeowners policy with my auto?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, simply complete this short form.
Insurance specifics
Knowing the specifics of your policy can be of help when determining the best coverages for your vehicles. The terms used in a policy can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
UM/UIM Coverage – This gives you protection when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as damage to your Acura TL.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked. Normally the UM/UIM limits are set the same as your liablity limits.
Medical costs insurance – Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for expenses like funeral costs, ambulance fees and X-ray expenses. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not available in all states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision – This covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You need to pay your deductible first then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims like damage from flooding, theft, hitting a deer, rock chips in glass and fire damage. The most a insurance company will pay at claim time is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Collision – Collision insurance will pay to fix damage to your TL resulting from colliding with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision coverage protects against things such as driving through your garage door, rolling your car, scraping a guard rail, sideswiping another vehicle and colliding with another moving vehicle. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to choose a higher deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Liability coverage – This coverage provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to a person or their property that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU from legal claims by others, and doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have limits of 50/100/50 which means $50,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $100,000, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Alternatively, you may have a combined limit that pays claims from the same limit and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for claims like repair costs for stationary objects, court costs, emergency aid, structural damage and legal defense fees. How much liability coverage do you need? That is your choice, but you should buy as high a limit as you can afford.
