Getting cheaper car insurance can be intimidating for comparison shopping over the internet. With dozens of online companies, how can vehicle owners possibly compare each option to find the cheapest rates?
It is always a good idea to compare premium rates before your next renewal because car insurance prices go up and down regularly. Just because you had the best rates for Impala insurance last year the chances are good that you can find a lower premium rate today. Ignore everything you know about car insurance because you’re about to learn how to use the internet to lower your rates without sacrificing coverage.
Buy car insurance online
There are a lot of ways to compare car insurance prices but one way is less labor-intensive and much quicker. You could waste a few hours talking about coverages with agents in your area, or you can stay home and use online quoting for quick rates.
Most major companies participate in a marketplace that allows shoppers to submit one quote, and every company returns a rated price determined by their information. This prevents consumers from doing quotation requests to every company.

One minor caviat to using this type of system is that consumers can’t choose which insurance companies you want to price. If you wish to select from a list of companies to compare rates, we have a page of the cheapest car insurance companies in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.
Whichever way you use, try to keep equivalent coverage data for every company. If you have mixed coverages it’s not possible to truly determine the lowest rate. Slightly different coverages can mean a large discrepancy in price. Just remember that comparing a large number of companies helps you find the best rates. Some insurance companies are not set up to provide rate quotes online, so you should also compare rates on coverage from those companies, too.

Tailor your insurance coverage to you
When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage, there is no “perfect” insurance plan. Everyone’s needs are different.
Here are some questions about coverages that could help you determine if your situation may require specific advice.
- Can I get a multi-policy discount for packaging my home and auto coverage?
- What if I total my 2008 Chevy Impala and owe more than it’s worth?
- Should I buy only the required minimum liability coverage?
- What are the best liability limits?
- What is roadside assistance coverage?
- Is my trailer covered?
- When should I drop full coverage on my 2008 Chevy Impala?
- Who is covered by my policy?
- Does insurance cover damages from a DUI accident?
If you can’t answer these questions, you may need to chat with a licensed agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, simply complete this short form.
Coverages available on your policy
Having a good grasp of auto insurance aids in choosing which coverages you need for your vehicles. The coverage terms in a policy can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
This coverage protects you and your vehicle when other motorists do not carry enough liability coverage. It can pay for injuries to you and your family as well as damage to your Chevy Impala.
Since many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages should not be overlooked.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP reimburse you for expenses such as prosthetic devices, dental work, nursing services, funeral costs and surgery. They are often used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover you and your occupants and also covers if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP is not an option in every state and may carry a deductible
Comprehensive insurance
This coverage pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for things like hitting a bird, hail damage, hitting a deer and a tree branch falling on your vehicle. The maximum payout a auto insurance company will pay at claim time is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Auto collision coverage
Collision insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage protects against things such as backing into a parked car, sideswiping another vehicle, colliding with a tree and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. It’s also possible to bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Liability coverages
Liability insurance provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to people or other property in an accident. This insurance protects YOU against other people’s claims. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. Your policy might show values of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 bodily injury coverage, $300,000 for the entire accident, and $100,000 of coverage for damaged propery.
Liability can pay for claims such as repair costs for stationary objects, medical services and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.
