Trying to find better auto insurance rates for your Scion xD? Buying budget auto insurance on the web may be impossible for consumers who are beginners to quoting and price shopping on the web. Because there are so many companies competing online, how can consumers efficiently compare every auto insurance company to find the lowest price?
The purpose of this post is to introduce you to how car insurance quotes work. If you have car insurance now, you will be able to reduce your rates substantially using this information. But consumers can benefit by having an understanding of the way companies sell online because it can help you find the best coverage.
Smart buyers can lower their insurance premiums
Many factors are part of the calculation when you get a price on insurance. Some are pretty understandable like a motor vehicle report, but other factors are more transparent like your vehicle usage or how safe your car is.
- No auto insurance gaps is important – Driving without insurance coverage in place can get you a ticket and you may have a hard time finding new coverage because you let your insurance lapse for non-payment. And not only will insurance be more expensive, being ticketed for driving with no insurance could result in a revoked license or a big fine. You will then be forced to prove you have insurance by filing a SR-22 with your state motor vehicle department.
- Is you employer costing you more? – Did you know that where you work can have an impact on rates? Jobs such as military generalsairline pilots and miners usually pay higher premiums than the average policyholder because of job stress and extremely grueling work hours. Conversely, jobs such as actors, athletes and the unemployed pay the least on xD coverage.
- Premiums are affected by your credit rating – A driver’s credit history is likely to be a major factor in determining what you pay. If your credit leaves room for improvement, you may save money insuring your 2008 Scion xD by repairing your credit. Insureds with high credit scores tend to be more responsible and file fewer claims than those with poor credit.
- Filing policy claims can increase rates – Auto insurance companies give most affordable rates to insureds who do not rely on their insurance for small claims. If you frequently file small claims, you can definitely plan on either a policy non-renewal or much higher rates. Your insurance policy is meant to be used in the event of major claims that would cause financial hardship.
- Drive less and pay lower prices – The more you drive your Scion each year the higher your rates will be. Almost all companies calculate prices based upon how the vehicle is primarily used. Cars and trucks used primarily for pleasure use cost less to insure as compared to vehicles used primarily for driving to work. Incorrect rating for your xD can cost quite a bit. Ask your agent if your vehicle rating correctly shows annual mileage.
- What are good liability limits? – Your policy’s liability coverage is the coverage that protects you if ever you are ruled to be at fault for an accident. It provides you with a defense in court which can cost a lot. Carrying liability coverage is mandatory and cheap compared to other policy coverages, so do not skimp.
- Big city or small town – Choosing to live in a rural area is a good thing when trying to find low car insurance rates. Fewer drivers and short commutes translates into fewer accidents in addition to lower liability claims Drivers in populated areas regularly have more auto accidents and higher rates of accident claims. More time on the road means a statistically higher chance of an accident.
- Battle of the sexes – Statistics show women are more cautious behind the wheel. The data does not necessarily mean that men are worse drivers. Women and men have fender benders at a similar rate, but men tend to have higher claims. Men also statistically get ticketed for serious violations such as driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving recklessly. Male drivers age 16 to 19 tend to get in the most accidents and therefore are the most expensive to insure.

Lower rate quotes with these insurance discounts
Buying insurance is not cheap, but you can get discounts to help offset the cost. Certain credits will be shown when you quote, but some may not be applied and must be manually applied before being credited.
- New Car Discount – Insuring a vehicle that is new can cost up to 25% less since newer models have better safety ratings.
- No Claim Discounts – Drivers who stay claim-free pay less compared to insureds who have frequent claims or accidents.
- Theft Prevention Discount – Cars optioned with advanced anti-theft systems are stolen with less frequency and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
- Early Switch Discount – A few insurance companies offer discounts for switching to them prior to your current policy expiration. This can save 10% or more.
- Discounts for Good Drivers – Insureds without accidents can get discounts for up to 45% lower rates on xD coverage than less cautious drivers.
- Online Discount – Some of the larger companies will provide an incentive for buying your policy over the internet.
Keep in mind that most credits do not apply to all coverage premiums. Most cut specific coverage prices like medical payments or collision. So when the math indicates all those discounts means the company will pay you, company stockholders wouldn’t be very happy.
The best insurance companies and some of the premium reductions they offer are:
- Farm Bureau has savings for driver training, good student, safe driver, multi-vehicle, youthful driver, and multi-policy.
- MetLife may include discounts for good student, defensive driver, good driver, accident-free, claim-free, multi-policy
- Progressive policyholders can earn discounts including homeowner, continuous coverage, online quote discount, good student, and multi-vehicle.
- AAA offers discounts for education and occupation, multi-car, pay-in-full, multi-policy, AAA membership discount, good student, and anti-theft.
- American Family offers premium reductions for good student, Steer into Savings, defensive driver, multi-vehicle, air bags, accident-free, and bundled insurance.
- Geico may have discounts that include seat belt use, federal employee, air bags, defensive driver, membership and employees, daytime running lights, and driver training.
- State Farm offers discounts including accident-free, good driver, anti-theft, Drive Safe & Save, and good student.
Before buying, ask all the companies to give you their best rates. A few discounts may not apply to policyholders in your area. To find providers that offer the discounts shown above, click here.
Be skeptical of car insurance ads
Well-known car insurance companies like State Farm, Allstate and Geico constantly bombard you with ads on television and other media. All the ads make an identical promise about how much you will save just by moving to their company. How does every car insurance company offer drivers better rates? It’s all in how they say it.
Insurance companies are able to cherry pick for the type of customer that will not have excessive claims. An example of a desirable risk may be a married male, owns their home, and insures a new vehicle. Someone that meets those criteria receive the lowest rate quotes and will also save some money.
Drivers who do not match these standards will see higher prices which translates to the customer not buying. If you listen to the ad wording, they say “people that switch” not “everybody who quotes” can save as much as they claim. That is how companies can claim big savings.
This really drives home the point why you absolutely need to get as many free auto insurance quotes as possible. It is just not possible to predict which insurance companies will give you lower auto insurance rates than your current company.
Insurance can get complicated
When choosing the right insurance coverage for your vehicles, there isn’t really a single plan that fits everyone. Every insured’s situation is different.
These are some specific questions might point out whether your personal situation may require specific advice.
- Am I covered when driving a rental car?
- Am I covered if I break a side mirror?
- Can I make deliveries for my home business?
- Are split liability limits better than a combined single limit?
- Do I have coverage for damage caused while driving under the influence?
- Can I pay claims out-of-pocket if I buy high deductibles?
- Do I need to file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you might consider talking to an agent. To find an agent in your area, complete this form.

Insurance coverages explained
Having a good grasp of a insurance policy can be of help when determining appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. Insurance terms can be confusing and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Uninsured and underinsured coverage
Your UM/UIM coverage gives you protection when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as damage to your Scion xD.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, their limits can quickly be used up. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is very important. Frequently the UM/UIM limits are set the same as your liablity limits.
Coverage for medical payments
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage kick in for expenses such as chiropractic care, hospital visits and EMT expenses. The coverages can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance program or if you do not have health coverage. Coverage applies to you and your occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Liability coverage
This will cover damage or injury you incur to people or other property. It protects YOU from legal claims by others, and doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. As an example, you may have liability limits of 25/50/25 which stand for $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $50,000 in injury protection per accident, and a total limit of $25,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Another option is a combined single limit or CSL which combines the three limits into one amount with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability coverage protects against things like attorney fees, repair costs for stationary objects and medical services. How much coverage you buy is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as high a limit as you can afford.
Collision coverage protection
This pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers things like hitting a mailbox, rolling your car, hitting a parking meter and sideswiping another vehicle. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are older. It’s also possible to increase the deductible to bring the cost down.
Comprehensive coverages
This covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first have to pay a deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims such as rock chips in glass, vandalism, damage from flooding, theft and a tree branch falling on your vehicle. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Online plus local equals savings
People change insurance companies for a variety of reasons including unfair underwriting practices, not issuing a premium refund, high prices and policy non-renewal. Whatever your reason, finding a great new company is actually quite simple.
Cheaper 2008 Scion xD insurance can be sourced from both online companies and with local insurance agents, and you should be comparing both so you have a total pricing picture. A few companies do not provide rate quotes online and most of the time these smaller companies sell through local independent agents.
You just read many ways to save on 2008 Scion xD insurance. The key thing to remember is the more you quote auto insurance, the better likelihood of getting low cost auto insurance. You may even find the most savings is with a small local company.
