Looking for the cheapest auto insurance rates for your Toyota Prius? Have you had enough of scraping the payment together to pay auto insurance each month? You are no different than many other vehicle owners.
Since you have so many choices of insurance companies, it can be challenging to choose the lowest price company.
Finding affordable protection is not that difficult. Just about everyone who carries auto insurance will most likely be able to find lower rates. But vehicle owners can benefit by having an understanding of the methods companies use to market on the web and take advantage of how the system works.
How to find low cost car insurance
Most companies like Progressive, Allstate and Geico make it easy to get coverage prices from their websites. Getting online quotes is pretty easy as all you need to do is type in the amount of coverage you want into the form. When the form is submitted, their quoting system obtains your driving and credit reports and provides a quote based on the information you submitted. Quoting online makes it a lot easier to compare rates but the process of having to visit multiple sites and type in the same data is not the best way to spend an afternoon. But it’s very important to get many rate quotes if you are searching for the lowest car insurance rates.
The easy way to compare rates
The easiest way to lower your car insurance bill utilizes a single form that gets prices from multiple companies. The form is fast, reduces the work, and makes online quotes a lot less work. After sending the form, it is quoted and you are able to buy any of the quotes that you receive.
If a lower price is quoted, it’s easy to complete the application and purchase the new policy. This process takes just a few minutes to complete and may save quite a bit of money.
To find out how much you’re overpaying now, click here to open in a new tab and enter your information. If you currently have coverage, we recommend that you enter the limits and deductibles identical to your current policy. Doing this guarantees you will get an apples-to-apples comparison for similar coverage.

Discount car insurance rates
Car insurance is not inexpensive, but there may be some discounts to reduce the price significantly. A few discounts will be applied when you get a quote, but a few must be specially asked for before being credited.
- Fewer Miles Equal More Savings – Driving less could earn lower premium rates on the low mileage vehicles.
- Early Payment Discounts – By paying your entire bill at once rather than paying monthly you may have a lower total premium amount.
- Waiver for an Accident – Not a discount per se, but certain companies will allow you to have one accident before your rates go up so long as you are claim-free prior to the accident.
- Homeowners Savings – Just being a homeowner can help you save on car insurance since owning and maintaining a home shows financial diligence.
- Organization Discounts – Being in certain professional organizations can get you a small discount on your next car insurance statement.
- Student in College – Children who are attending college and don’t have a car could get you a discount.
- Senior Citizen Rates – If you qualify as a senior citizen, you may be able to get a small decrease in premiums on Prius insurance.
- Defensive Driving Course – Passing a course in safe driver could possibly earn you a 5% discount and easily recoup the cost of the course.
- Save with a New Car – Putting insurance coverage on a new car can get you a discount since new vehicles are generally safer.
- Theft Deterent – Cars equipped with anti-theft or alarm systems help deter theft and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
Discounts save money, but please remember that many deductions do not apply to the overall cost of the policy. Most only reduce the price of certain insurance coverages like collision or personal injury protection. If you do the math and it seems like having all the discounts means you get insurance for free, companies don’t profit that way. Any qualifying discounts will cut the amount you pay for coverage.
A list of car insurance companies and a summarized list of policyholder discounts are:
- State Farm has savings for defensive driving training, multiple policy, anti-theft, student away at school, and multiple autos.
- Geico offers discounts including seat belt use, five-year accident-free, good student, emergency military deployment, membership and employees, driver training, and multi-vehicle.
- Progressive has discounts for multi-policy, online signing, online quote discount, multi-vehicle, homeowner, and continuous coverage.
- 21st Century offers premium reductions for student driver, early bird, 55 and older, driver training, and homeowners.
- American Family may have discounts that include good driver, accident-free, air bags, multi-vehicle, and mySafetyValet.
- The Hartford offers discounts for driver training, vehicle fuel type, anti-theft, air bag, bundle, defensive driver, and good student.
- AAA discounts include good driver, multi-car, AAA membership discount, anti-theft, and pay-in-full.
If you are trying to find affordable auto insurance quotes, ask every company which discounts you may be entitled to. All car insurance discounts may not apply to policyholders in your state. To see companies with discount rates, follow this link.
Tailor your car insurance coverage to you
When it comes to choosing adequate coverage, there really is not a “best” method to buy coverage. Each situation is unique so your insurance needs to address that. For instance, these questions may help highlight whether or not you might need professional guidance.
- What exactly is covered by my policy?
- Why is insurance for a teen driver so high?
- Is a fancy paint job covered?
- Does liability extend to a camper or trailer?
- Are my friends covered when driving my 2008 Toyota Prius?
- How can I force my company to pay a claim?
- When should I not file a claim?
- When should I drop full coverage on my 2008 Toyota Prius?
- Is borrowed equipment or tools covered if stolen or damaged?
If you can’t answer these questions then you might want to talk to an agent. If you don’t have a local agent, fill out this quick form or click here for a list of car insurance companies in your area.
Insurance coverage considerations
Knowing the specifics of your insurance policy helps when choosing which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. The terms used in a policy can be confusing and coverage can change by endorsement. Shown next are the normal coverages offered by insurance companies.
Medical expense coverage
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage reimburse you for short-term medical expenses such as nursing services, doctor visits, funeral costs, chiropractic care and X-ray expenses. They are used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. Coverage applies to both the driver and occupants in addition to being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP coverage is not available in all states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Comprehensive protection
Comprehensive insurance covers damage from a wide range of events other than collision. A deductible will apply then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims like rock chips in glass, falling objects, theft, hitting a deer and fire damage. The highest amount your insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider dropping full coverage.
Uninsured or underinsured coverage
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage gives you protection from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered losses include hospital bills for your injuries and also any damage incurred to your Toyota Prius.
Since many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Usually your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Auto liability
This protects you from damage or injury you incur to people or other property in an accident. This insurance protects YOU from claims by other people. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You commonly see values of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, $300,000 for the entire accident, and $100,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which limits claims to one amount rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability insurance covers things like pain and suffering, medical expenses, court costs and legal defense fees. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.
Auto collision coverage
This coverage covers damage to your Prius from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision coverage protects against things like crashing into a building, damaging your car on a curb, hitting a parking meter, driving through your garage door and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from older vehicles. Another option is to raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
