Saving money on insurance coverage is difficult for drivers new to comparison shopping online. There are so many companies to choose from that it can turn into a difficult mission to compare prices.
How to buy insurance online
Many insurance companies provide prices on the web. Doing online price comparisons is very simple as you simply type in the coverages you want into the quote form. Upon sending the form, the quote system requests your driving and credit reports and returns a price quote.
This makes comparing rates easy, but the work required to visit multiple sites and type in the same information is not the best way to spend an afternoon. But it’s also necessary to compare as many rates as possible in order to find the lowest possible prices on insurance.
There is an easier way!
The smarter way to find better insurance pricing uses just one form that analyzes rates from multiple companies. It saves time, requires less work, and makes quoting online much simpler. Immediately after submitting the form, it is rated and you are able to buy any one of the resulting price quotes.
If the quotes result in lower rates, you can simply submit the application and purchase the new policy. The whole process takes 15 minutes at the most and you will find out if you’re overpaying now.
In order to compare rates now, click here to open in a new tab and fill out the form. To compare your current rates, we recommend that you enter the insurance coverages just like they are on your policy. This guarantees you are getting a fair comparison for similar insurance coverage.

These discounts can lower your car insurance rates
Car insurance is not inexpensive, but you may be missing some discounts to cut the cost considerably. Most are applied at the time of quoting, but some discounts are required to be specially asked for before being credited.
- Bundle and Save – When you have multiple policies with one insurance company they may give you a discount of over 10 percent off each policy depending on the company.
- Discounts for Multiple Vehicles – Purchasing coverage when you have multiple cars or trucks with the same car insurance company could earn a price break for each car.
- Online Discount – A few larger online companies give back up to $50 shop car insurance on your computer.
- Student Driver Training – Teen drivers should participate in a local driver’s education class in high school.
- Telematics Data Discounts – Drivers that enable driving data collection to analyze where and when they drive by using a telematics device such as Drivewise from Allstate or Snapshot from Progressive might get better premium rates as long as they are good drivers.
- Early Signing – Some larger companies provide a discount for switching policies prior to your current policy expiring. The savings is around 10%.
- Good Grades Discount – Getting good grades could provide a savings of up to 20% or more. The good student discount can last up to age 25.
Just know that some of the credits will not apply to all coverage premiums. Some only apply to the cost of specific coverages such as liability, collision or medical payments. Even though it appears you can get free auto insurance, it just doesn’t work that way. But all discounts will reduce your policy premium.
A list of car insurance companies and a partial list of their discounts include:
- Geico may include discounts for multi-vehicle, military active duty, defensive driver, multi-policy, anti-lock brakes, and membership and employees.
- Mercury Insurance may offer discounts for annual mileage, low natural disaster claims, multi-car, anti-theft, and type of vehicle.
- Farmers Insurance has savings for teen driver, early shopping, electronic funds transfer, pay in full, multi-car, youthful driver, and alternative fuel.
- Auto-Owners Insurance offers premium reductions for safe driver, multiple vehicles, safe vehicle, multi-policy, and anti-lock brakes.
- Liberty Mutual has discounts for multi-policy, exclusive group savings, preferred payment discount, new move discount, and hybrid vehicle.
- SAFECO offers discounts including anti-lock brakes, accident prevention training, safe driver, bundle discounts, drive less, teen safe driver, and multi-car.
- Progressive discounts include continuous coverage, online quote discount, good student, multi-vehicle, online signing, and homeowner.
- USAA offers discounts for annual mileage, family discount, multi-policy, good student, military installation, driver training, and loyalty savings.
Before purchasing a policy, check with each company or agent the best way to save money. Savings might not apply everywhere. To find insurers who offer car insurance discounts, click this link.
Different people need different insurance coverages
When it comes to choosing the right insurance coverage, there is no “best” method to buy coverage. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
Here are some questions about coverages that may help highlight if your situation could use an agent’s help.
- What if I total my 2009 HUMMER H2 SUT and owe more than it’s worth?
- Am I covered if I break a side mirror?
- Can I make deliveries for my home business?
- How high should my medical payments coverage be?
- What is an SR-22 filing?
- Are rock chip repairs covered?
- Are my tools covered if they get stolen from my vehicle?
If you’re not sure about those questions but one or more may apply to you, you might consider talking to an agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, take a second and complete this form.
Detailed coverages of your insurance policy
Learning about specific coverages of your insurance policy can help you determine which coverages you need at the best deductibles and correct limits. The terms used in a policy can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
Your UM/UIM coverage gives you protection from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family and also any damage incurred to your 2009 HUMMER H2 SUT.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is very important. Frequently these limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Comprehensive insurance
This pays to fix your vehicle from damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first must pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like damage from a tornado or hurricane, vandalism, hail damage, rock chips in glass and damage from flooding. The most you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Coverage for collisions
This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. A deductible applies then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision insurance covers things like hitting a mailbox, sideswiping another vehicle, colliding with another moving vehicle, rolling your car and hitting a parking meter. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from older vehicles. It’s also possible to raise the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Liability car insurance
Liability coverage protects you from damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people in an accident. It protects you against other people’s claims. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have values of 25/50/25 that translate to $25,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000. Alternatively, you may have one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage protects against things like court costs, repair bills for other people’s vehicles and bail bonds. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but you should buy higher limits if possible.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for immediate expenses for things like ambulance fees, funeral costs, nursing services, rehabilitation expenses and surgery. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not universally available and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
