Finding cheaper insurance for a new or used Toyota Prius can be a painful process, but you can learn a few tricks to find lower rates.
There are both good and bad ways to compare auto insurance rates and we’ll show you the quickest way to quote coverages for a new or used Toyota and locate the best price possible either online or from local insurance agents.
It’s a good idea to get comparison quotes once or twice a year because auto insurance rates are variable and change quite frequently. Just because you found the lowest rate on Prius coverage a couple years back you may be paying too much now. Forget anything you know (or think you know) about auto insurance because we’re going to demonstrate one of the quickest ways to eliminate unnecessary coverages and save money.
Discounts can really help lower premiums
Companies that sell car insurance do not list the entire discount list in an easy-to-find place, so we took the time to find a few of the more well known as well as the least known credits available to lower your premiums when you buy insurance coverage online. If you check and find you aren’t receiving every discount available, you’re just leaving money on the table.
- Own a Home – Owning your own home or condo can help you save on insurance since home ownership requires a higher level of personal finance.
- Discounts for New Vehicles – Putting insurance on a new car may earn a small discount compared to insuring an older model.
- Early Signing – A few insurance companies allow discounts for renewing your policy before your current policy expires. You could save around 10% when you buy insurance coverage online.
- Low Mileage – Keeping the miles down on your Toyota could qualify for lower premium rates due to less chance of an accident.
- Paperwork-free – A few larger online companies will give a small break for completing your application on their website.
- Drive Safe and Save – Drivers who don’t get into accidents can pay as much as 50% less on Prius coverage as compared to drivers with claims.
We need to note that most discounts do not apply to your bottom line cost. Most only reduce specific coverage prices like comp or med pay. Just because you may think adding up those discounts means a free policy, it’s just not the way it works.
The best insurance companies and the discounts they provide are outlined below.
- Mercury Insurance offers discounts for accident-free, professional/association, location of vehicle, ease of repair, and multi-policy.
- Farmers Insurance offers premium reductions for pay in full, multi-car, distant student, teen driver, youthful driver, and homeowner.
- Farm Bureau has discounts for youthful driver, multi-vehicle, good student, multi-policy, 55 and retired, safe driver, and renewal discount.
- State Farm may offer discounts for Steer Clear safe driver discount, driver’s education, multiple policy, passive restraint, and multiple autos.
- Allstate discounts include anti-lock brakes, early signing, resident student, senior citizen, eSmart discount, good payer, and EZ pay plan discount.
- Geico has savings for anti-theft, military active duty, good student, air bags, five-year accident-free, and driver training.
When quoting, ask all the companies the best way to save money. A few discounts may not apply to policies in your area. If you would like to choose from a list of providers that offer many of these discounts, follow this link.

Will just any policy work for me?
When it comes to choosing proper insurance coverage for your vehicles, there really is no single plan that fits everyone. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
These are some specific questions could help you determine whether you would benefit from professional advice.
- Are there companies who specialize in insuring high-risk drivers?
- When would I need additional glass coverage?
- Am I covered if I wreck a rental car?
- When can I cancel my policy?
- Do I have newly-aquired coverage?
- Are rock chip repairs covered?
- Do I need roadside assistance coverage?
- Do I need special endorsements for business use of my vehicle?
- What if I total my 2009 Toyota Prius and owe more than it’s worth?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you might consider talking to an insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, complete this form. It only takes a few minutes and can provide invaluable advice.
Smaller companies may have the best rates
Consumers can’t avoid all the ads that promise big savings for switching from the likes of Progressive, Allstate and Geico. They all seem to tend to make the same promise that drivers can save some big amount if you get a free insurance coverage quote and switch your coverage to them.
But how can every company lower your prices?
Insurance companies have underwriting criteria for the driver that is profitable for them. An example of a desirable risk could be a married female, owns their home, and drives newer vehicles. Any new insured who fits those characteristics will probably get the lowest premium rates and most likely will save when they switch companies.
Consumers who don’t meet this ideal profile will have to pay higher premiums which results in the driver buying from a lower-cost company. The wording the ads use say “people that switch” not “all people who quote” save money. That’s the way insurance companies can confidently advertise the savings.
Because of the profiling, it is so important to compare free insurance coverage quotes often. It’s just too difficult to predict with any certainty which company will give you the biggest savings.
Auto insurance coverages
Knowing the specifics of your car insurance policy can be of help when determining which coverages you need for your vehicles. Policy terminology can be difficult to understand and coverage can change by endorsement.
Collision coverage – Collision coverage covers damage to your Prius resulting from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You first must pay a deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision can pay for claims like scraping a guard rail, crashing into a ditch, rolling your car, backing into a parked car and sideswiping another vehicle. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. It’s also possible to bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Comprehensive coverage (or Other than Collision) – This will pay to fix damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims such as fire damage, damage from a tornado or hurricane, damage from flooding and damage from getting keyed. The highest amount a car insurance company will pay at claim time is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider dropping full coverage.
Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist insurance – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage gives you protection from other motorists when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. It can pay for hospital bills for your injuries and damage to your Toyota Prius.
Since a lot of drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, their limits can quickly be used up. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is very important. Usually the UM/UIM limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Insurance for medical payments – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance reimburse you for expenses for doctor visits, dental work, chiropractic care, hospital visits and ambulance fees. They are often used in conjunction with a health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. It covers you and your occupants and also covers getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Liability car insurance – Liability insurance protects you from damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property. This coverage protects you from legal claims by others, and does not provide coverage for damage to your own property or vehicle.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. Your policy might show policy limits of 100/300/100 that means you have a $100,000 limit per person for injuries, a limit of $300,000 in injury protection per accident, and $100,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Some companies may use a combined limit which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage protects against claims such as repair bills for other people’s vehicles, attorney fees, structural damage, medical expenses and pain and suffering. How much liability coverage do you need? That is your choice, but consider buying as much as you can afford.

Smart consumers save more
When getting insurance coverage quotes online, do not buy less coverage just to save a little money. There are too many instances where an insured cut liability limits or collision coverage and found out when filing a claim that it was a big mistake. The goal is to buy a smart amount of coverage for the lowest cost, but do not skimp to save money.
We covered a lot of ways to compare 2009 Toyota Prius insurance car insurance rates online. The most important thing to understand is the more rate comparisons you have, the better likelihood of getting low cost insurance coverage. Consumers may even find the lowest car insurance rates come from the least-expected company.
Drivers change insurance companies for a number of reasons such as policy non-renewal, high prices, questionable increases in premium and even poor customer service. Regardless of your reason for switching companies, choosing a new insurance company is easier than you think.
