Special considerations
When it comes to choosing coverage, there is no “best” method to buy coverage. Each situation is unique so this has to be addressed. For instance, these questions may help you determine if your insurance needs could use an agent’s help.
- Are rock chip repairs covered?
- Is my vehicle covered by my employer’s policy when using it for work?
- Is pleasure use cheaper than using my 2010 Nissan Rogue to commute?
- Am I insured when driving a different vehicle?
- Should I put collision coverage on all my vehicles?
- Am I covered if my car is in a flood?
- Does my 2010 Nissan Rogue need full coverage?
- Do I have coverage when making deliveries for my home business?
- Am I covered if I wreck a rental car?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but one or more may apply to you then you might want to talk to an agent. If you don’t have a local agent, fill out this quick form or click here for a list of auto insurance companies in your area.
Insurance coverages 101
Knowing the specifics of your policy can be of help when determining appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be confusing and reading a policy is terribly boring. Listed below are the normal coverages found on most insurance policies.
Collision coverage – Collision insurance covers damage to your Rogue from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. You first must pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage protects against claims like sideswiping another vehicle, rolling your car and driving through your garage door. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. Drivers also have the option to raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Medical payments coverage and PIP – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for immediate expenses such as EMT expenses, hospital visits, X-ray expenses and doctor visits. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants as well as getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not universally available and may carry a deductible
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage – This coverage provides protection when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family and damage to your 2010 Nissan Rogue.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is very important. Normally these coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Comprehensive coverage – This covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first have to pay a deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like damage from flooding, hitting a bird, hitting a deer, rock chips in glass and a broken windshield. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider dropping full coverage.
Liability – Liability coverage can cover damage that occurs to people or other property. This coverage protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
It consists of three limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You commonly see values of 100/300/100 that means you have $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $300,000, and $100,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Alternatively, you may have a combined limit which limits claims to one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability can pay for claims such as court costs, loss of income, structural damage, attorney fees and funeral expenses. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a personal decision, but buy as high a limit as you can afford.
