Trying to find cheaper car insurance rates for your Toyota Matrix? No one in their right mind looks forward to paying premiums for car insurance, in particular when their premiums are through the roof. With people having so many options, it’s difficult to locate the most affordable insurance company.
It’s a good habit to price shop coverage before your policy renews because car insurance prices trend upward over time. Just because you had the lowest price for Matrix coverage a year ago a different company probably has better rates today. You’ll find a ton of advice on car insurance online, but in just a couple of minutes you can learn some great ways to save money.
Low cost auto insurance quotes online
There are several ways to compare auto insurance quotes, but one way is less time-consuming than others. You can waste a lot of time discussing policy coverages with local insurance agents in your area, or you can stay home and use online quoting to accomplish the same thing much quicker.
Many of the larger companies belong to a marketplace where prospective buyers send in one quote, and at least one company provides a quote based on that data. This system prevents you from having to do quote requests to every company.

The single downside to getting quotes like this is that consumers can’t choose which companies you want to price. So if you want to select specific providers to compare rates, we have assembled a list of companies who write auto insurance in your area. Click to view list.
The method you choose is up to you, but be sure to compare apples-to-apples coverage limits with every price quote. If you are comparing unequal deductibles or liability limits you can’t possibly get a fair rate comparison.

Cheap auto insurance quotes with discounts
Car insurance can cost a lot, but you might already qualify for some discounts that can drop the cost substantially. Many discounts should be triggered when you purchase, but some need to be inquired about prior to getting the savings. If you don’t get every credit possible, you could be getting lower rates.
- Driver Education Discount – Reduce the cost of insurance for teen drivers by having them participate in a local driver’s education class in high school.
- Low Mileage – Keeping the miles down on your Toyota could qualify for better auto insurancerates on cars that stay parked.
- More Vehicles More Savings – Purchasing coverage when you have multiple cars with the same auto insurance company can get a discount on all vehicles.
- Auto/Home Discount – If you can combine your home and auto policy and insure them with the same company you may earn up to 20% off your total premium.
- Discount for Life Insurance – Not all auto insurance companies offer life insurance, but some may give you a break if you buy some life insurance in addition to your auto policy.
- Pay Upfront and Save – If you pay your entire premium ahead of time instead of monthly or quarterly installments you can avoid monthly service charges.
- Cautious Drivers – Safe drivers can get discounts for up to 45% lower rates for Matrix coverage than drivers with accident claims.
- 55 and Retired – Drivers that qualify as senior citizens can possibly qualify for a discount up to 10% for Matrix coverage.
- Claim-Free Discount – Drivers with accident-free driving histories have much lower rates when compared to policyholders that have many claims.
- Savings for New Vehicles – Insuring a new car can get you a discount because new vehicles have to meet stringent safety requirements.
Remember that some of the credits will not apply to all coverage premiums. Most only apply to the cost of specific coverages such as liability, collision or medical payments. So even though they make it sound like you would end up receiving a 100% discount, auto insurance companies aren’t that generous.
Companies and the discounts they provide are:
- Progressive offers discounts including continuous coverage, online signing, online quote discount, multi-vehicle, good student, and homeowner.
- MetLife has savings for defensive driver, claim-free, good driver, multi-policy, good student, and accident-free.
- Mercury Insurance may include discounts for location of vehicle, professional/association, multi-car, multi-policy, age of vehicle, low natural disaster claims, and good student.
- Nationwide offers premium reductions for good student, family plan, business or organization, Farm Bureau membership, and anti-theft.
- Geico discounts include daytime running lights, multi-vehicle, good student, five-year accident-free, military active duty, anti-theft, and driver training.
- AAA may offer discounts for anti-theft, multi-car, good driver, multi-policy, and education and occupation.
When comparing rates, check with all companies you are considering how many discounts you can get. A few discounts may not apply in your area. To view auto insurance companies that offer discounts, click here.
Tailor your insurance coverage coverage to you
When buying coverage, there really is not a “best” method to buy coverage. Every situation is different so this has to be addressed. Here are some questions about coverages that may help you determine if your insurance needs may require specific advice.
- Can my teen driver be rated on a liability-only vehicle?
- Am I missing any policy discounts?
- What if I owe more than I can insure my car for?
- How much can I save by bundling my policies?
- Is a new car covered when I drive it off the dealer lot?
- Which companies will insure high-risk drivers?
- How high should deductibles be on a 2010 Toyota Matrix?
If you’re not sure about those questions but you know they apply to you then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form or go to this page to view a list of companies. It’s fast, free and can provide invaluable advice.
Coverages available on your car insurance policy
Knowing the specifics of your car insurance policy can help you determine which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. Car insurance terms can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. Below you’ll find the normal coverages offered by car insurance companies.
Medical expense insurance
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance provide coverage for short-term medical expenses for things like ambulance fees, surgery, nursing services and funeral costs. They can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover both the driver and occupants in addition to if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Auto liability insurance
This will cover damage that occurs to other people or property. It protects you from legal claims by others. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have limits of 50/100/50 which means a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a total of $100,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $50,000.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as medical services, medical expenses, bail bonds, pain and suffering and emergency aid. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a personal decision, but buy as high a limit as you can afford.
Collision coverage protection
Collision coverage covers damage to your Matrix from colliding with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision can pay for claims such as crashing into a building, hitting a mailbox, colliding with another moving vehicle and backing into a parked car. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are older. You can also increase the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers
This protects you and your vehicle when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered losses include injuries to you and your family as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea.
Comprehensive (Other than Collision)
Comprehensive insurance coverage will pay to fix damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things like theft, damage from a tornado or hurricane and fire damage. The most your car insurance company will pay is the actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
