Want better car insurance rates? Drivers have many options when trying to find low-cost GMC Sierra 1500 insurance. You can either spend your time calling around to compare prices or utilize the internet to find the lowest rates.
There are both good and bad ways to buy car insurance and you need to know the proper way to get price quotes for your GMC and obtain the lowest possible price either online or from local insurance agents.
You should make it a habit to get comparison quotes yearly because insurance prices are usually higher with each renewal. Even if you got the best quotes on Sierra coverage last year a different company probably has better rates today. Forget anything you know (or think you know) about car insurance because I’m going to let you in on the secrets to the only way to buy cheaper car insurance.
Save a ton by receiving discounts
Some providers don’t always list all available discounts in an easy-to-find place, so the list below gives a summary of both well-publicized and the more hidden discounts you could be receiving when you buy car insurance online.
- Senior Discount – Drivers that qualify as senior citizens could receive better insurance rates on Sierra coverage.
- Fewer Miles Equal More Savings – Maintaining low annual mileage can qualify you for discounted insurancerates on garaged vehicles.
- Switch and Save Discount – A few insurance companies give discounts for renewing your policy early. The savings is around 10%.
- Discounts for Safe Drivers – Safe drivers may save up to 50% more on Sierra coverage than less cautious drivers.
- Buy New and Save – Buying insurance on a new vehicle may earn a small discount because new model year vehicles keep occupants safer.
- Student Discounts – Being a good student can earn a discount of 20% or more. Many companies even apply the discount to college students until age 25.
- Homeowners Pay Less – Just owning your own home may trigger a policy discount on insurance because maintaining a house means you have a higher level of financial diligence.
- Discounts for Multiple Vehicles – Insuring several vehicles on one policy can get a discount on all vehicles.
- Anti-lock Brake Discount – Vehicles with anti-lock braking systems can stop better under adverse conditions so companies give up to a 10% discount.
Don’t be shocked that most of the big mark downs will not be given to your bottom line cost. Most only apply to specific coverage prices like physical damage coverage or medical payments. Even though it appears it’s possible to get free car insurance, insurance companies aren’t that generous.
The best insurance companies and some of the premium reductions they offer are outlined below.
- Farm Bureau offers discounts for driver training, good student, renewal discount, 55 and retired, and safe driver.
- Liberty Mutual offers premium reductions for new graduate, hybrid vehicle, exclusive group savings, multi-policy, new move discount, preferred payment discount, and newly married.
- State Farm discounts include anti-theft, multiple autos, Drive Safe & Save, student away at school, good driver, Steer Clear safe driver discount, and accident-free.
- Auto-Owners Insurance may include discounts for air bags, safe vehicle, teen driver, student away at school, safe driver, and mature driver.
- Geico has discounts for daytime running lights, emergency military deployment, seat belt use, military active duty, driver training, and multi-policy.
- SAFECO policyholders can earn discounts including bundle discounts, teen safe driver, multi-car, safe driver, accident prevention training, drive less, and anti-lock brakes.
If you want the cheapest car insurance quotes, ask each company or agent which credits you are entitled to. Some of the earlier mentioned discounts might not be offered in your area.

GMC Sierra 1500 insurance premium factors
The best way to find cheaper car insurance is to take a look at the rating factors that play a part in calculating car insurance rates. If you understand what controls the rates you pay, this enables informed choices that could result in lower rates. Lots of things are used when you get a price on insurance. Some are obvious such as your driving record, although some other factors are not as apparent like your vehicle usage or how financially stable you are.
- Older drivers are lower risk – Older people are more cautious drivers, are lower risk to insure and receive fewer citations.Beginning drivers are proven to be inattentive when driving and because of this, their car insurance rates are much higher.
- Too many claims and you’ll pay more – Insurance companies give lower rates to insureds who do not file claims often. If you tend to file frequent claims, you can pretty much guarantee increased rates or even have your policy non-renewed. Your insurance policy is meant to be used in the event of claims that you cannot pay yourself.
- Put fewer miles on your vehicle – The higher the miles on your GMC in a year the higher your rate. Most companies charge rates determined by how the vehicle is used. Vehicles that are left in the garage receive lower rates than cars that get driven a lot. Double check that your declarations sheet correctly shows the correct usage for each vehicle. An incorrectly rated Sierra 1500 is throwing money out the window.
- Lower premiums for safer vehicles – Vehicles with high crash test scores are cheaper to insure. Vehicles built for safety protect occupants better and any reduction in injury severity means less money paid by your insurance company passed on to you as lower rates. If your GMC Sierra 1500 is rated at least four stars on Safercar.gov or an “acceptable” rating on iihs.org it may cost less to insure.
- Gender as a rate factor – The statistics show that men are more aggressive behind the wheel. The data does not necessarily mean that females are better at driving than males. Females and males are in accidents at about the same rate, but males tend to have more serious accidents. Men also tend to have more aggressive citations such as driving while intoxicated (DWI) or driving recklessly. Male teenagers are most likely to cause an accident and therefore pay the highest rates.
- Getting married equates to better premiums – Walking down the aisle actually saves money compared to being single. Having a significant other may mean you are more mature and statistics prove married drivers tend to have fewer serious accidents.
Your insurance coverage should be tailored to you
When it comes to choosing proper insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there isn’t really a perfect coverage plan. Every insured’s situation is different.
For example, these questions can aid in determining if you would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- When can my company non-renew my policy?
- Am I covered if I hit a deer?
- Is upholstery damage covered by car insurance?
- Can I afford to pay high deductible claims out of pocket?
- What discounts do I qualify for?
- What is roadside assistance coverage?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you know they apply to you, you may need to chat with a licensed insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, simply complete this short form. It is quick, free and can help protect your family.
Car insurance 101
Having a good grasp of your auto insurance policy can help you determine the right coverages for your vehicles. Policy terminology can be impossible to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Medical payments and PIP coverage – Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for short-term medical expenses such as chiropractic care, ambulance fees, hospital visits, rehabilitation expenses and prosthetic devices. They are used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover both the driver and occupants and also covers being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not an option in every state but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Comprehensive auto coverage – This coverage will pay to fix damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims like damage from getting keyed, hitting a bird, a broken windshield, rock chips in glass and damage from flooding. The most you’ll receive from a claim is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Liability car insurance – This provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people by causing an accident. It protects you from claims by other people, and doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You commonly see liability limits of 50/100/50 which means a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit without having the split limit caps.
Liability can pay for things like structural damage, attorney fees and emergency aid. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a personal decision, but consider buying higher limits if possible.
UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage – This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered losses include injuries to you and your family as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Due to the fact that many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is important protection for you and your family. Frequently your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are similar to your liability insurance amounts.
Collision – This pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with another car or object. You will need to pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage pays for claims like crashing into a ditch, sideswiping another vehicle, hitting a parking meter and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to raise the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.

The best insurance company isn’t always the cheapest
More affordable insurance is available both online as well as from independent agents, and you need to price shop both to have the best rate selection. There are still a few companies who do not provide online price quotes and many times these small insurance companies work with independent agencies.
Consumers who switch companies do it for any number of reasons including delays in responding to claim requests, denial of a claim, unfair underwriting practices and lack of trust in their agent. It doesn’t matter why you want to switch finding the right insurance provider is easier than you think.
As you restructure your insurance plan, don’t be tempted to reduce coverage to reduce premium. In many cases, an insured dropped full coverage only to find out they didn’t purchase enough coverage. Your goal is to purchase plenty of coverage for the lowest cost.
