Trying to come up with a payment for overpriced insurance can drain your budget and force you to prioritize other expenses. Doing a price comparison can lower your rates and help to lower your monthly bill.
You have multiple auto insurance companies to insure vehicles with, and even though it’s nice to have multiple companies, it can be more challenging to get the best deal.
It’s a good idea to take a look at other company’s rates at least once a year because insurance rates change quite often. Despite the fact that you may have had the best premium rates on GT-R insurance on your last policy you will most likely find a better price today. Block out anything you think you know about insurance because I’m going to teach you the best methods to save money, get proper coverage and the best rates.
Quote auto insurance online
Performing a rate comparison can be exhausting if you don’t understand the fastest way to get free quotes. You could spend the better part of a day talking about coverages with insurance companies in your area, or you could use the internet to get rates in a matter of minutes.
Many insurance companies enroll in a system that enables customers to only type in their quote data once, and every company then returns a price quote determined by their information. This saves time by eliminating quote requests for each company you want a rate for.
To access this free quoting program, click here to open in new window.
The only drawback to doing it this way is you are unable to specify which carriers to get pricing from. So if you prefer to choose individual companies to request quotes from, we have assembled a list of auto insurance companies in your area. Click to view list.
How you compare quotes is your choice, just ensure you are comparing exactly the same coverages and limits with every price quote. If you use different deductibles you will not be able to decipher which rate is best. Quoting even small variations in coverage limits may result in a large different in cost. It’s important to know that comparing more quotes helps increase your odds of locating the best price.

Beware of misleading car insurance ads
Car insurance providers like State Farm, Allstate and Geico regularly use ads on television and other media. They all seem to convey the message that people will save just by switching your car insurance policy to them. How does each company offer drivers better rates? This is the trick they use.
Different companies require specific criteria for the type of driver that will not have excessive claims. For instance, a profitable insured may need to be between the ages of 30 and 45, has never had a claim, and has a high credit rating. Someone who fits those characteristics receive the lowest rate quotes and will save money with a new company.
People who fall short of the requirements will probably be forced to pay a higher rate and ends up with the customer not purchasing. The ads state “people that switch” not “everybody who quotes” save that much money. This is how insurance companies can make claims that they all have the best prices.
This illustrates why it is so important to compare as many free insurance quotes as you can. It’s just too difficult to predict the company that will have the lowest rates.
What determines Nissan GT-R insurance prices?
A large part of saving on auto insurance is knowing some of the factors that help determine the price you pay for auto insurance. When you understand what determines base rates, this enables informed choices that may result in better auto insurance rates. Lots of things are taken into consideration when premium rates are determined. Some are pretty understandable like an MVR report, but others are not quite as obvious such as whether you are married or how safe your car is.
- Don’t cancel your auto insurance policy without a new one in place – Not having insurance is a misdemeanor and you will pay a penalty because you let your insurance lapse for non-payment. In addition to paying higher premiums, not being able to provide proof of insurance may earn you a steep fine or even jail time.
- Lower rates with theft deterrents – Owning a car with an alarm system can earn a premium discount. Anti-theft devices such as OnStar found on GM vehicles, advanced tracking like LoJack, and vehicle immobilization systems all help prevent car theft.
- If you don’t need it don’t buy it – Policies have add-on coverages that you can buy on your auto insurance policy. Insurance for rental car coverage, better glass coverage, and extra life insurance coverage are probably not needed. These may sound like a good investment when buying your policy, but now you might not need them so consider taking them off your policy.
- Less chance of injury means lower rates – Vehicles with good safety scores tend to have lower insurance rates. Vehicles engineered for safety reduce the chance of injuries and lower rates of occupant injuries translates into fewer and smaller insurance claims and cheaper rates on your policy. If your Nissan GT-R is rated at least an “acceptable” rating on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website you may qualify for a discount.
- Why do you need liability insurance? – A critical coverage on your policy, liability insurance will protect you if ever a jury decides you are liable for damages caused by your negligence. This coverage provides legal defense which can cost a lot. Liability is cheap compared to insuring for physical damage coverage, so drivers should carry high limits.
Discounts for lower-cost auto insurance rates
Auto insurance is neither fun to buy or cheap, but you may find discounts that can drop the cost substantially. Certain discounts will be triggered automatically when you quote, but some may not be applied and must be specially asked for before being credited.
- Federal Government Employee – Federal government employees can earn a discount up to 10% on GT-R insurance with select insurance companies.
- Military Deployment Discount – Being deployed with a military unit may qualify for rate reductions.
- Multi-car Discount – Buying a policy with several vehicles on one policy could earn a price break for each car.
- Savings for New Vehicles – Putting auto insurance coverage on a new car can save you some money due to better safety requirements for newer models.
- Drivers Ed for Students – Teen drivers should successfully complete driver’s ed class if it’s offered in school.
- Theft Deterent – Cars, trucks, and SUVs equipped with tracking devices and advanced anti-theft systems are stolen with less frequency and will qualify for a discount on a insurance quote.
- Distant College Student Discount – Youth drivers who are enrolled in higher education away from home and don’t have a car could qualify for this discount.
- Student Discounts – Getting good grades can save 20 to 25%. This discount can apply up until you turn 25.
- Fewer Miles Equal More Savings – Maintaining low annual mileage may allow you to get better auto insurancerates on cars that stay parked.
- Discount for Multiple Policies – When you have multiple policies and place coverage with the same company you could earn a discount of over 10 percent off each policy depending on the company.
Discounts lower rates, but some of the credits will not apply to your bottom line cost. Most only cut individual premiums such as comprehensive or collision. Just because you may think adding up those discounts means a free policy, you aren’t that lucky.
Larger auto insurance companies and the discounts they provide are:
- 21st Century has discounts for theft prevention, early bird, student driver, automatic seat belts, teen driver, air bags, and good student.
- State Farm may include discounts for multiple policy, Steer Clear safe driver discount, multiple autos, accident-free, Drive Safe & Save, and passive restraint.
- AAA offers discounts including good student, multi-car, anti-theft, pay-in-full, education and occupation, multi-policy, and AAA membership discount.
- Liberty Mutual may have discounts that include newly retired, exclusive group savings, new move discount, safety features, hybrid vehicle, teen driver discount, and multi-policy.
- Progressive may offer discounts for multi-vehicle, multi-policy, online signing, online quote discount, and good student.
If you are trying to find low cost insurance quotes, ask every prospective company what discounts are available to you. Savings may not apply in your area. If you would like to see a list of insurers with significant discounts, click this link.

Tailor your car insurance coverage to you

- What is UM/UIM insurance?
- Do I need to file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
- How much liability insurance is required?
- Is my business laptop covered if it gets stolen from my vehicle?
- How many claims can I have before being cancelled?
- Does coverage extend to my business vehicle?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you may need to chat with a licensed insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, fill out this quick form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.
Coverages available on your policy
Having a good grasp of auto insurance helps when choosing which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Listed below are the normal coverages found on most auto insurance policies.
Liability coverages
Liability coverage provides protection from damage that occurs to people or other property by causing an accident. This insurance protects YOU from claims by other people. It does not cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You might see values of 25/50/25 which stand for a $25,000 limit per person for injuries, $50,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property. Occasionally you may see a combined limit which limits claims to one amount rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability coverage protects against things like emergency aid, attorney fees and funeral expenses. How much liability coverage do you need? That is up to you, but you should buy as large an amount as possible.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
This protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Because many people only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea. Most of the time these limits are set the same as your liablity limits.
Comprehensive coverage
This will pay to fix damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for things like a tree branch falling on your vehicle, hitting a deer, rock chips in glass, damage from a tornado or hurricane and damage from flooding. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Medical payments coverage and PIP
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP provide coverage for immediate expenses like nursing services, doctor visits, funeral costs, dental work and prosthetic devices. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance plan or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover both the driver and occupants in addition to being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Collision coverage
This will pay to fix damage to your GT-R resulting from a collision with another car or object. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage pays for things like sideswiping another vehicle, scraping a guard rail, colliding with a tree and colliding with another moving vehicle. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from lower value vehicles. You can also bump up the deductible to bring the cost down.
Summing up your auto insurance search
