Finding budget-priced insurance coverage on the web may be problematic for people not familiar with comparing and buying insurance coverage online. Since there are so many insurers available, how can people efficiently compare every possible option in order to find cheaper insurance coverage rates?
Locating affordable auto insurance coverage can be fairly easy. Basically, every vehicle owner who is required by state law to have auto insurance will most likely be able to reduce their rates. But drivers do need to understand how companies sell online.
How to get car insurance rate quotes
When shopping for affordable insurance coverage quotes, there are a couple of ways to obtain and compare prices from different companies. By far the easiest way to do a complete rate comparison is to use the internet to compare rates. This is very easy and can be done in just a few minutes using one of these methods.
- One of the fastest ways consumers can make multiple comparisons is a comparison rater form like this one (opens in new window). This type of form saves time by eliminating multiple quote forms to each individual car insurance company. Completing one form will return price quotes from several companies. Recommended for those who want to invest the least amount of time.
- A less efficient way to analyze rates is to manually visit each individual company website to request a price quote. For sake of this example, let’s say you want to compare rates from Progressive, Farmers and American Family. You would be required to go to each individual site to enter your coverage information, which is why the first method is quicker. To view a list of companies in your area, click here.
- The least efficient method to find cheaper rates is to drive around to insurance agencies in your area. Quoting and buying insurance online has reduced the need for local agents unless your situation requires the trained advice that you can only get from talking to an agent. Some companies do allow you to compare the best prices online and get advice from an agent in your area.
Whichever way you choose to compare rates, be sure you’re using the same coverage limits for every quote you compare. If your comparisons have unequal deductibles or liability limits it’s impossible to determine which company has the best rates. Just slight variations in limits could throw off the whole comparison. And when comparison shopping, more quotes helps increase your odds of locating a lower rate. Not every company does online quotes, so it’s recommended that you also compare price quotes from those companies as well.

These discounts can lower your insurance coverage rates
Insurance coverage can be pricey, but there could be significant discounts that many consumers don’t even know exist. Some trigger automatically when you purchase, but some need to be specifically requested prior to receiving the credit.
- Home Ownership Discount – Simply owning a home may earn you a small savings due to the fact that maintaining a home is proof of financial responsibility.
- Drive Less and Save – Low mileage vehicles can earn slightly better rates than normal.
- Claim-Free Discount – Good drivers with no accidents pay less as opposed to drivers who are more careless.
- Student Discount for Driver Training – Cut your cost by having your teen driver complete a driver education course as it will make them better drivers and lower rates.
- Life Insurance Discount – Select companies reward you with lower premium rates if you buy a life policy as well.
- Paper-free Discount – A few larger online companies may give you up to $50 for buying a policy and signing up on their website.
A little disclaimer on discounts, most of the big mark downs will not be given to the overall cost of the policy. Most cut individual premiums such as medical payments or collision. So despite the fact that it appears you could get a free insurance coverage policy, companies don’t profit that way.

Different people need different insurance coverages
When buying coverage, there really is not a cookie cutter policy. Every insured’s situation is different.
Here are some questions about coverages that could help you determine whether or not you might need an agent’s assistance.
- How does medical payments coverage work?
- Should I get collision insurance on every vehicle?
- Should I buy additional glass protection?
- Should I carry comprehensive and collision coverage?
- Why am I required to get a high-risk car insurance policy?
- When can I cancel my policy?
- How much liability do I need to cover my assets?
- When should my teen driver be added to my policy?
If you’re not sure about those questions, you might consider talking to a licensed agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form.
Car insurance coverage basics
Having a good grasp of your car insurance policy can help you determine the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be impossible to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.
Liability car insurance
Liability coverage will cover injuries or damage you cause to a person or their property in an accident. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. It does not cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You might see limits of 50/100/50 which stand for $50,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Occasionally you may see a combined limit which provides one coverage limit and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability can pay for things such as funeral expenses, emergency aid, attorney fees, repair costs for stationary objects and bail bonds. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but consider buying as high a limit as you can afford.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage provide coverage for bills for things like pain medications, nursing services, rehabilitation expenses and doctor visits. They are often used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers both the driver and occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Comprehensive insurance
Comprehensive insurance pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first have to pay a deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims such as hitting a bird, damage from a tornado or hurricane, rock chips in glass, a broken windshield and hitting a deer. The highest amount a car insurance company will pay at claim time is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Collision insurance
Collision insurance covers damage to your Fit caused by collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. A deductible applies then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision coverage protects against claims such as sideswiping another vehicle, sustaining damage from a pot hole and colliding with another moving vehicle. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. You can also bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered losses include hospital bills for your injuries and damage to your Honda Fit.
Since a lot of drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is very important. Usually these coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
