Want better insurance coverage rates for your Scion FR-S? Buying discount insurance coverage can be intimidating for consumers who are beginners to quoting and comparing and buying insurance coverage on the web. Because there are so many online companies, how can drivers efficiently compare each option to find the lowest price available?
If you are paying for car insurance now, you will be able to lower your premiums substantially using these methods. Locating the cheapest coverage can be fairly easy. But consumers need to learn how big insurance companies price insurance differently and apply this information to your search.
Lower rate quotes with these eight discounts
Car insurance is expensive, but companies offer discounts to help bring down the price. Some discounts will apply at the time of quoting, but less common discounts must be manually applied prior to getting the savings.
- Defensive Driving Course – Passing a course in safe driver could possibly earn you a 5% discount and easily recoup the cost of the course.
- Discount for Good Grades – This discount may save you up to 25%. Most companies allow this discount well after school through age 25.
- Discount for Swiching Early – A few larger companies give discounts for buying a policy before your current expiration date. Ten percent is about the average savings.
- Membership in Organizations – Participating in qualifying employment or professional organizations can get you a small discount on your policy.
- Auto/Home Discount – If you have multiple policies with the same company you could save approximately 10% to 15%.
- Discount for Passive Restraints – Vehicles equipped with air bags and/or automatic seat belt systems may qualify for discounts as much as 30%.
- Waiver for an Accident – Not necessarily a discount, but certain companies permit an accident before they charge you more for coverage as long as you don’t have any claims for a particular time prior to the accident.
- Discount for Life Insurance – Larger insurance companies have better prices if you take out a life policy as well.
Discounts lower rates, but most discounts do not apply to all coverage premiums. Most only reduce specific coverage prices like collision or personal injury protection. Even though it appears all the discounts add up to a free policy, companies don’t profit that way.
A list of car insurance companies and some of the premium reductions they offer can be found below.
- Geico has discounts for military active duty, driver training, anti-lock brakes, multi-vehicle, and anti-theft.
- Auto-Owners Insurance discounts include group or association, multiple vehicles, paid in full, mature driver, and anti-theft.
- American Family may offer discounts for air bags, bundled insurance, good student, mySafetyValet, and defensive driver.
- Esurance offers discounts including safety device, good driver, DriveSense, claim free, renters, and online shopper.
- Progressive includes discounts for multi-vehicle, good student, continuous coverage, online quote discount, multi-policy, and online signing.

What is the best insurance coverage?
When it comes to buying adequate coverage for your vehicles, there really is no cookie cutter policy. Everyone’s needs are different.
These are some specific questions can help discover whether or not you might need professional guidance.
- Can I rate high risk drivers on liability-only vehicles?
- What is the minimum liability in my state?
- Do I need rental car coverage?
- Is my cargo covered for damage or theft?
- Does insurance cover damages from a DUI accident?
- Do I benefit by insuring my home with the same company?
- Does coverage extend to my business vehicle?
- Should I rate my 2013 Scion FR-S as pleasure use or commute?
- Is pleasure use cheaper than using my 2013 Scion FR-S to commute?
- What is no-fault insurance?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions, then you may want to think about talking to an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, take a second and complete this form.
Switch companies and save? Really?
Popular insurance providers such as 21st Century, Allstate and State Farm constantly bombard you with ads on TV and radio. All the companies advertise claims about how much you will save if you switch your coverage. How does every company charge lower premium rates? It’s all in the wording.
Many companies have a preferred profile for the type of driver that earns them the highest profit. For example, a profitable risk profile may be between the ages of 30 and 50, carries high limits, and the vehicle is rated for pleasure use. A driver that matches those criteria will qualify for the lowest car insurance rates and will most likely save quite a bit of money when switching.
Potential insureds who cannot meet this stringent profile may be required to pay a more expensive rate which usually ends up with the driver buying from a lower-cost company. The trick companies use is to say “drivers that switch” but not “all drivers who get quotes” save that much. That’s the way companies can truthfully make the claims of big savings.
This emphasizes why you should get insurance quotes as often as possible. It is impossible to predict which insurance companies will fit you best based on your risk profile.
What insurance coverages do you need?
Having a good grasp of insurance can help you determine appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. Insurance terms can be confusing and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Medical expense coverage – Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for expenses for things like prosthetic devices, doctor visits, dental work, funeral costs and rehabilitation expenses. They are often used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. Coverage applies to you and your occupants as well as if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP coverage is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Uninsured or underinsured coverage – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other drivers when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family and also any damage incurred to your Scion FR-S.
Due to the fact that many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked. Usually the UM/UIM limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Auto liability insurance – Liability insurance can cover damage that occurs to other people or property. Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. Your policy might show policy limits of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a total of $300,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $100,000. Another option is one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for things like attorney fees, structural damage, loss of income, bail bonds and pain and suffering. How much liability should you purchase? That is a decision to put some thought into, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.
Comprehensive protection – This coverage covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for claims such as hitting a deer, rock chips in glass and hitting a bird. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Collision – Collision insurance pays for damage to your FR-S from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision insurance covers claims such as crashing into a building, rolling your car, sideswiping another vehicle and scraping a guard rail. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. You can also raise the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.

Be a money saver!
Cheaper 2013 Scion FR-S insurance can be found both online as well as from independent agents, so you need to shop insurance with both in order to have the best chance of saving money. Some car insurance companies do not offer rates over the internet and many times these small, regional companies sell through local independent agents.
When shopping online for car insurance, make sure you don’t buy less coverage just to save a little money. There have been many cases where an insured dropped liability limits or collision coverage and discovered at claim time that the savings was not a smart move. The ultimate goal is to purchase plenty of coverage for the lowest price and still be able to protect your assets.
Drivers change insurance companies for many reasons like not issuing a premium refund, delays in responding to claim requests, policy cancellation and unfair underwriting practices. Regardless of your reason for switching companies, choosing a new insurance company can be less work than you think.
