Are you regretting the purchase of an overpriced insurance coverage policy? Believe me when I say there are lots of residents who feel the same. Lots of insurance companies contend to insure your vehicles, and it can be difficult to compare rates and get the best coverage at the best rate
Take advantage of every insurance discount
Car insurance companies don’t list every available discount in an easy-to-find place, so the following list contains both the well known and also the lesser-known ways to save on insurance.
- Driver’s Ed – Teen drivers should successfully complete driver’s ed class in school.
- New Car Discount – Adding a new car to your policy is cheaper due to better safety requirements for new model year vehicles.
- Life Insurance Discount – Not all insurance companies offer life insurance, but some may give you a break if you buy life insurance from them.
- Waiver for an Accident – but certain companies will let one accident slide without raising rates if you are claim-free before the accident.
- Fewer Miles Equal More Savings – Keeping the miles down on your Scion could be rewarded with slightly better insurancerates than normal.
- Bundled Policy Discount – If you insure your home and vehicles with the same company you may save over 10 percent off each policy depending on the company.
- More Vehicles More Savings – Buying coverage for multiple vehicles with the same company qualifies for this discount.
- Theft Deterent – Cars optioned with advanced anti-theft systems have a lower chance of being stolen so companies will give you a small discount.
Remember that most discounts do not apply to your bottom line cost. Most only apply to individual premiums such as collision or personal injury protection. Even though it may seem like adding up those discounts means a free policy, it’s just not the way it works.
Companies and some of the discounts are shown below.
- Farmers Insurance may have discounts that include electronic funds transfer, youthful driver, bundle discounts, teen driver, early shopping, pay in full, and good student.
- State Farm has savings for driver’s education, student away at school, passive restraint, multiple autos, Drive Safe & Save, safe vehicle, and multiple policy.
- Liberty Mutual offers discounts for new vehicle discount, hybrid vehicle, preferred payment discount, safety features, newly retired, and teen driver discount.
- MetLife offers premium reductions for multi-policy, good student, accident-free, claim-free, defensive driver, and good driver.
- Progressive has discounts for good student, multi-vehicle, homeowner, online quote discount, and online signing.

How to know if you need help
When buying coverage, there isn’t really a cookie cutter policy. Everyone’s situation is a little different so this has to be addressed. Here are some questions about coverages that might point out if your situation will benefit from professional help.
- What is the difference between comprehensive and collision coverage?
- Is my 2014 Scion iQ covered for smoke damage?
- Is my state a no-fault state?
- Is my custom paint covered by insurance?
- Do I need rental car coverage?
- Should I get collision insurance on every vehicle?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you may need to chat with a licensed insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, simply complete this short form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area. It’s fast, free and you can get the answers you need.
Specific coverage details
Having a good grasp of your policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. Auto insurance terms can be ambiguous and reading a policy is terribly boring. Shown next are typical coverages found on most auto insurance policies.
Collision insurance
Collision insurance covers damage to your iQ caused by collision with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision can pay for things such as crashing into a building, colliding with a tree, hitting a mailbox and hitting a parking meter. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so you might think about dropping it from lower value vehicles. Another option is to raise the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Liability
Liability coverage will cover injuries or damage you cause to people or other property by causing an accident. This coverage protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Liability coverage has three limits: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You might see limits of 25/50/25 that translate to a $25,000 limit per person for injuries, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000.
Liability can pay for things like court costs, medical services, medical expenses and structural damage. How much liability coverage do you need? That is up to you, but you should buy as large an amount as possible.
UM/UIM Coverage
This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Due to the fact that many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea.
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision
Comprehensive insurance coverage will pay to fix damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as theft, hitting a bird, vandalism, falling objects and rock chips in glass. The most your auto insurance company will pay is the actual cash value, so if the vehicle’s value is low it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Medical costs insurance
Med pay and PIP coverage kick in for expenses for hospital visits, chiropractic care, rehabilitation expenses and pain medications. They can be used in conjunction with a health insurance plan or if you are not covered by health insurance. Coverage applies to all vehicle occupants and also covers getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
A penny earned…
Affordable 2014 Scion iQ insurance can be sourced both online in addition to local insurance agencies, so you should be comparing quotes from both in order to have the best price selection to choose from. There are still a few companies who may not offer rate quotes online and usually these smaller companies provide coverage only through independent insurance agents.
As you go through the steps to switch your coverage, do not buy poor coverage just to save money. In many instances, someone dropped full coverage only to discover later that the few dollars in savings costed them thousands. Your aim should be to find the BEST coverage at the lowest possible cost, but do not skimp to save money.
