Pricey insurance can deplete your budget and force you to make tough financial choices. Getting a rate comparison is recommended to lower your bills every month.
Multiple car insurance companies compete to insure your vehicles, so it’s not easy to compare every company and get the best coverage at the best rates possible.
If you are insured now or need new coverage, you can use this information to cut your premiums while maintaining coverages. Choosing the best insurance company for you is not that difficult. Drivers just need to know the most effective way to shop their coverage around online.
Insurance policy discounts
Insuring your fleet can be pricey, but there’s a good chance there are discounts to help bring down the price. Some discounts apply automatically when you purchase, but a few must be specifically requested before you will receive the discount.
- Driving Data Discount – Drivers that enable their insurance company to track their driving habits remotely such as In-Drive from State Farm or Allstate’s Drivewise system could possibly reduce rates as long as they are good drivers.
- Student Driver Training – Reduce the cost of insurance for teen drivers by having them participate in a local driver’s education class in high school.
- Sign Online – Certain insurance companies will give you a small discount just for signing your application over the internet.
- Full Payment Discount – If paying your policy premium upfront instead of monthly or quarterly installments you can actually save on your bill.
- Discount for Passive Restraints – Vehicles equipped with air bags and/or automatic seat belt systems may get savings as much as 30%.
- Senior Citizens – If you’re over the age of 55, you may qualify for lower premium rates on SRX insurance.
You can save money using discounts, but most credits do not apply to the entire policy premium. Some only apply to the price of certain insurance coverages like comprehensive or collision. Even though the math looks like all the discounts add up to a free policy, you’re out of luck.
Large insurance companies and a partial list of their discounts are:
- AAA may offer discounts for multi-policy, pay-in-full, good student, AAA membership discount, and good driver.
- Progressive offers discounts for homeowner, multi-vehicle, multi-policy, continuous coverage, and online signing.
- State Farm offers premium reductions for safe vehicle, Drive Safe & Save, multiple autos, defensive driving training, and good student.
- Esurance discounts include online shopper, DriveSense, anti-lock brakes, emergency road assistance, and renters.
- Nationwide may include discounts for multi-policy, defensive driving, business or organization, family plan, good student, and Farm Bureau membership.
Check with each company which discounts they offer. A few discounts may not be offered in your area. If you would like to view insurance companies who offer cheap insurance quotes, follow this link.

Car insurance quotes comparison
There are a lot of ways to compare car insurance quotes, and some are less labor-intensive and much quicker. You could waste a few hours discussing policy coverages with local insurance agents in your area, or you can stay home and use the web to quickly compare rates.
Most car insurance companies are enrolled in a marketplace where insurance shoppers submit their information once, and at least one company then returns a price quote based on that data. This prevents consumers from doing quote forms for every car insurance company. To fill out one form to compare multiple rates now click here to start a free quote.
The single downside to comparing rates this way is that consumers can’t choose which carriers you will receive quotes from. So if you want to select specific providers to receive pricing from, we have a page of companies who write car insurance in your area. Click here to view list.
It’s up to you which method you use, but compare the exact same coverage data for every quote you compare. If you use mixed coverages then you won’t be able to make a fair rate comparison.
How do I know if I need professional advice?
When it comes to choosing the best insurance coverage coverage, there is no perfect coverage plan. Your needs are not the same as everyone else’s and your policy should reflect that. Here are some questions about coverages that can aid in determining whether you will benefit from professional help.
- What is medical payments coverage?
- When can my company non-renew my policy?
- Do I need roadside assistance coverage?
- Can I still get insurance after a DUI?
- Does my personal policy cover me when driving out-of-state?
- How much underlying liability do I need for an umbrella policy?
- Can I rent a car in Mexico?
- Am I covered if I break a side mirror?
- When should I buy a commercial auto policy?
If you’re not sure about those questions but you think they might apply to your situation, then you may want to think about talking to an agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, complete this form or click here for a list of insurance coverage companies in your area. It’s fast, free and can help protect your family.
Insurance coverage breakdown
Understanding the coverages of insurance can help you determine the best coverages for your vehicles. Insurance terms can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Shown next are typical coverages offered by insurance companies.
Auto liability insurance
Liability coverage protects you from damage or injury you incur to a person or their property. This coverage protects you against claims from other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You might see liability limits of 100/300/100 which stand for a limit of $100,000 per injured person, $300,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property.
Liability coverage protects against claims like pain and suffering, repair bills for other people’s vehicles, medical expenses and medical services. How much coverage you buy is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
Insurance for medical payments
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage reimburse you for expenses for things like surgery, hospital visits, funeral costs, ambulance fees and dental work. They are often used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance program or if you are not covered by health insurance. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants and also covers being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Comprehensive coverage (or Other than Collision)
Comprehensive insurance pays for damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage pays for things such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, a broken windshield and hail damage. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Auto collision coverage
This covers damage to your SRX caused by collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers claims like crashing into a building, hitting a parking meter and crashing into a ditch. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider removing coverage from lower value vehicles. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist insurance
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage provides protection when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. It can pay for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your Cadillac SRX.
Because many people have only the minimum liability required by law, their limits can quickly be used up. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family.

Be a smart shopper
As you restructure your insurance plan, do not reduce needed coverages to save money. Too many times, someone dropped liability coverage limits to discover at claim time that it was a big error on their part. Your strategy should be to buy a smart amount of coverage for the lowest cost, not the least amount of coverage.
Lower-priced car insurance can be sourced on the web and with local insurance agents, so you need to shop auto insurance with both in order to have the best chance of saving money. Some insurance providers don’t offer rate quotes online and most of the time these regional insurance providers work with local independent agencies.
