When shopping for more affordable insurance, do you get frustrated by the wide range of car insurance sources? Many other drivers are too. People have such a large number of options that it can quickly become more work than you anticipated to find the best rates.
Consumers need to do rate comparisons before your next renewal because prices are variable and change quite frequently. Despite the fact that you may have had the best quotes for M6 insurance a year ago you can probably find a better rate now. Block out anything you think you know about car insurance because you’re going to learn how to use online quotes to save on car insurance.
Free insurance coverage quotes
When looking for affordable auto insurance quotes, there are a couple ways to compare rate quotes from different insurance companies. The easiest way to compare rates is simply to get online rate quotes. It’s really quite simple and can be done in a couple of different ways.
- One of the best ways to find low rates is an all-inclusive rate comparison click here to open form in new window. This type of form saves time by eliminating separate quote forms to each individual insurance coverage company. One form gets prices estimates from all major companies. Just one form and you’re done.
- A more time consuming way to get comparison quotes requires a trip to the website for every company you want to comare and repeat the quote process. For examples sake, we’ll assume you want to compare Nationwide, State Farm and Travelers. In order to get each rate, you would have to spend time going to each site individually and enter your policy data, and that explains why we recommend the first method.
For a list of links to companies insuring cars in your area, click here.
- Even if you have time, the least recommended method to get comparison rates is driving to and from local insurance agencies. The ability to buy insurance online eliminates the need for an insurance agent unless you have a need for the personal advice of a local agency. Although you can compare online quotes and get advice from an agent in your area.
The method you choose is up to you, but be sure to compare identical deductibles and coverage limits with each company. If the quotes have different deductibles it will be impossible to decipher which rate is best. Just slight variations in coverages could throw off the whole comparison. And when price shopping your coverage, making a lot of price comparisons helps you find lower pricing.

Take advantage of every auto insurance discount
Some providers don’t always advertise every possible discount in an easy-to-find place, so below is a list both the well known in addition to some of the lesser obvious auto insurance savings.
- Policy Bundle Discount – If you combine your homeowners and auto policies with the same insurance company you may save over 10 percent off each policy depending on the company.
- Driver’s Ed – Make teen driver coverage more affordable by requiring them to enroll and complete driver’s education as it will make them better drivers and lower rates.
- Switch and Save Discount – A few insurance companies allow discounts for switching companies before your current expiration date. This discount can save up to 10%.
- Air Bag Discount – Vehicles equipped with air bags or automatic seat belts may get savings of more than 20%.
- Claim-Free Discount – Claim-free drivers have much lower rates as compared to drivers who are more careless.
- Good Grades Discount – This discount can get you a discount of up to 25%. The good student discount can last until age 25.
- Homeowners Savings – Just owning your own home can earn you a little savings because it requires a higher level of personal finance.
- Paperwork-free – Some insurance companies will discount your bill up to fifty bucks for buying your policy on the internet.
- Memberships – Being in qualifying employment or professional organizations could earn you a nice discount on your next renewal.
- Service Members Pay Less – Being on active duty in the military could qualify you for better auto insurance rates.
Remember that most discounts do not apply to the entire policy premium. Most cut the price of certain insurance coverages like physical damage coverage or medical payments. Despite the appearance that you could get a free auto insurance policy, that’s just not realistic.

How to know if you need help
When buying the best auto insurance coverage, there isn’t really a “perfect” insurance plan. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
Here are some questions about coverages that might point out if your insurance needs would benefit from professional advice.
- Why do I need rental car insurance?
- When should I not file a claim?
- Is my teen driver covered when they drive my company car?
- Should I drop comprehensive coverage on older vehicles?
- Am I covered if I crash into my own garage door?
- How can I find cheaper teen driver insurance?
- Am I covered by my employer’s commercial auto policy when driving my personal car for business?
- Should I get collision insurance on every vehicle?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you know they apply to you, then you may want to think about talking to a licensed insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form.
What car insurance coverages do you need?
Having a good grasp of your car insurance policy can be of help when determining appropriate coverage and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be confusing and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.
UM/UIM Coverage
This coverage provides protection when the “other guys” either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. It can pay for injuries to you and your family and also any damage incurred to your BMW M6.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea.
Coverage for collisions
Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with another car or object. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers claims such as colliding with a tree, crashing into a ditch and hitting a parking meter. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. Another option is to choose a higher deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Medical costs insurance
Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for short-term medical expenses like X-ray expenses, EMT expenses, hospital visits and prosthetic devices. They can be used in conjunction with a health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. Coverage applies to you and your occupants as well as getting struck while a pedestrian. Personal injury protection coverage is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Liability
This provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to other’s property or people in an accident. It protects YOU against other people’s claims, and does not provide coverage for your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You commonly see limits of 50/100/50 that means you have a limit of $50,000 per injured person, $100,000 for the entire accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery.
Liability coverage pays for things like attorney fees, loss of income, bail bonds, medical services and medical expenses. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a personal decision, but consider buying as large an amount as possible.
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision
This covers damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for claims like damage from a tornado or hurricane, a tree branch falling on your vehicle, fire damage, a broken windshield and theft. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
