Purchasing discount auto insurance on the web may be rather challenging for consumers not familiar with comparing and buying auto insurance on the web. With a ridiculous number of companies in the marketplace, how can drivers possibly compare each option to find the best available price?
Shop auto insurance online
There are a lot of ways you can shop for auto insurance but one way is easier and takes less work. You could waste a few hours driving to agents in your area, or you could use online quoting to get the quickest rates.
Many popular insurance companies are enrolled in a marketplace that enables customers to send in one quote, and each company returns a rated price determined by their information. This prevents consumers from doing quotation requests for each company.
To compare rates now click here to open in new window.
The single downside to pricing coverage this way is you don’t know exactly which providers you want to price. So if you want to choose from a list of companies to receive pricing from, we put together a list of auto insurance companies in your area. Click to view list.
The approach you take is up to you, just be certain you are entering nearly identical quote information with each company. If each company quotes unequal deductibles or liability limits you can’t possibly decipher which rate is best. Having just a slight variation in insurance coverages or limits may result in a large different in cost. Just remember that comparing a wide range of rates will increase your chances of finding a better price.

Are you earning every discount?
Insurance is not an enjoyable expense, but you might be missing out on some discounts to reduce the price significantly. Larger premium reductions will be automatically applied at the time of purchase, but some may not be applied and must be asked for before you get the savings.
- Low Mileage Discounts – Maintaining low annual mileage could be rewarded with slightly better prices than normal.
- ABS Brakes – Cars, trucks, and SUVs that have steering control and anti-lock brakes are safer to drive and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
- Good Student – This discount could provide a savings of up to 20% or more. Most companies allow this discount up until you turn 25.
- Theft Prevention System – Cars, trucks, and SUVs equipped with tracking devices and advanced anti-theft systems help deter theft and earn discounts up to 10% off your insurance coverage quote.
- Bundle and Save – If you have multiple policies with the same insurance company you could get a discount of over 10 percent off each policy depending on the company.
- Seat Belt Usage – Drivers who always wear seat belts and also require passengers to fasten their seat belts can save 10% or more on the medical payments or PIP coverage costs.
- Accident Forgiveness Coverage – but companies like Geico and Allstate permit an accident without raising rates if your claims history is clear for a set time period.
One last thing about discounts, most discount credits are not given to your bottom line cost. The majority will only reduce the price of certain insurance coverages like comprehensive or collision. So even though you would think adding up those discounts means a free policy, you aren’t that lucky. But all discounts will bring down the premium cost.
Companies and the discounts they provide are detailed below.
- American Family may include discounts for accident-free, air bags, good student, defensive driver, Steer into Savings, bundled insurance, and early bird.
- State Farm may have discounts that include good student, anti-theft, Drive Safe & Save, student away at school, and defensive driving training.
- 21st Century has discounts for driver training, early bird, homeowners, defensive driver, theft prevention, air bags, and anti-lock brakes.
- Travelers includes discounts for multi-car, payment discounts, early quote, driver training, good student, and student away at school.
- Geico policyholders can earn discounts including defensive driver, membership and employees, driver training, military active duty, multi-policy, emergency military deployment, and anti-lock brakes.
Before you buy a policy, ask each company or agent which credits you are entitled to. A few discounts may not apply in your area. If you would like to see a list of providers that provide some of the discounts listed above, click this link.
When in doubt talk to an agent
When it comes to choosing coverage, there isn’t really a “best” method to buy coverage. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
Here are some questions about coverages that can aid in determining if your insurance needs may require specific advice.
- Am I covered if my car is in a flood?
- Can I rent a car in Mexico?
- Can I make deliveries for my home business?
- How high should my uninsured/underinsured coverage be in my state?
- Can I rate high risk drivers on liability-only vehicles?
- Should I drop comprehensive coverage on older vehicles?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but a few of them apply, then you may want to think about talking to a licensed insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, fill out this quick form.
Auto insurance coverage basics
Understanding the coverages of your auto insurance policy helps when choosing the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Medical costs insurance – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance provide coverage for short-term medical expenses such as prosthetic devices, hospital visits, X-ray expenses, funeral costs and doctor visits. They are utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants and will also cover if you are hit as a while walking down the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not universally available but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Collision – This covers damage to your CLS-Class resulting from a collision with another car or object. You will need to pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage pays for claims such as colliding with another moving vehicle, scraping a guard rail, rolling your car, colliding with a tree and backing into a parked car. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so you might think about dropping it from older vehicles. It’s also possible to raise the deductible to bring the cost down.
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision – This covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like hitting a deer, theft, falling objects and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum payout you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle’s value is low it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Liability coverage – Liability insurance can cover damages or injuries you inflict on people or other property. This coverage protects you against other people’s claims. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Liability coverage has three limits: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You commonly see limits of 50/100/50 which stand for a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a per accident bodily injury limit of $100,000, and property damage coverage for $50,000.
Liability coverage protects against things like pain and suffering, bail bonds, medical expenses, structural damage and court costs. How much liability coverage do you need? That is your choice, but you should buy as much as you can afford.
UM/UIM Coverage – Your UM/UIM coverage provides protection when the “other guys” either have no liability insurance or not enough. This coverage pays for hospital bills for your injuries as well as damage to your Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class.
Since many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is very important.
