Car owners who are new to the process of shopping for insurance coverage online may find buying inexpensive auto insurance is quite challenging.
It’s important to shop coverage around before your next renewal because rates are rarely the same from one policy term to another. Even if you think you had the best rate for Leaf insurance on your last policy you will most likely find a better price today. You’ll find a ton of advice on insurance coverage online, but you can learn some good information on how to save money.
How to buy insurance coverage online
There are a lot of ways to compare insurance coverage quotes, and some are less labor-intensive and much quicker. You can waste a lot of time discussing policy coverages with insurance agencies in your area, or you could save time and use the web to get rates in a matter of minutes.
Most of the best insurance companies are enrolled in a marketplace where prospective buyers enter their policy data once, and each participating company returns a rated price based on that data. This prevents consumers from doing quote forms for every insurance coverage company.

The only drawback to doing it this way is you don’t know exactly the providers to get pricing from. If you prefer to choose from a list of companies to request quotes from, we have a page of the cheapest insurance coverage companies in your area. Click here to view list.
The method you choose is up to you, but be certain you are entering equivalent coverage limits for each quote you get. If you compare unequal deductibles or liability limits you can’t possibly determine the lowest rate for your Nissan Leaf. Just a small difference in limits may result in large price differences. And when comparison shopping, comparing more rates from different companies will increase your chances of finding lower pricing.

Everyone needs different insurance coverage coverages
When it comes to choosing the right insurance coverage for your vehicles, there isn’t really a cookie cutter policy. Everyone’s situation is unique.
These are some specific questions may help highlight whether or not you might need an agent’s assistance.
- Do I need replacement cost coverage on my 2017 Nissan Leaf?
- What discounts do I qualify for?
- Is a fancy paint job covered?
- Am I covered if I drive in a foreign country?
- How much liability insurance is required?
- Exactly who is provided coverage by my policy?
If you’re not sure about those questions but you know they apply to you then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out this quick form.
Car insurance coverage breakdown
Having a good grasp of car insurance helps when choosing the best coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. Policy terminology can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist insurance
This coverage protects you and your vehicle from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. It can pay for medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your Nissan Leaf.
Because many people only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family.
Insurance for medical payments
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for expenses such as X-ray expenses, pain medications and dental work. They are often used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. It covers not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants and also covers getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is only offered in select states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Auto liability insurance
This provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to other people or property in an accident. This coverage protects you from claims by other people, and doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You commonly see limits of 25/50/25 which means a limit of $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000.
Liability insurance covers things such as court costs, bail bonds and medical services. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as high a limit as you can afford.
Collision protection
This covers damage to your Leaf from colliding with an object or car. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage protects against claims such as hitting a mailbox, sideswiping another vehicle, sustaining damage from a pot hole and rolling your car. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. It’s also possible to choose a higher deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Comprehensive coverage (or Other than Collision)
This covers damage that is not covered by collision coverage. A deductible will apply and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things like hitting a bird, hail damage, damage from flooding, theft and fire damage. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
