When should I discuss my situation with an agent?
When it comes to choosing coverage, there really is not a perfect coverage plan. Everyone’s needs are different and a cookie cutter policy won’t apply. Here are some questions about coverages that can help discover if your situation may require specific advice.
- How do I file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
- Do I pay less if my vehicle is kept in my garage?
- Does liability extend to a camper or trailer?
- Am I covered when driving in Canada or Mexico?
- How high should my medical payments coverage be?
- Is my custom paint covered by insurance?
- Am I covered by my spouse’s policy after a separation?
If you’re not sure about those questions but a few of them apply, then you may want to think about talking to an insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, simply complete this short form or go to this page to view a list of companies. It is quick, free and you can get the answers you need.
Insurance coverages and their meanings
Understanding the coverages of your insurance policy can help you determine appropriate coverage at the best deductibles and correct limits. Insurance terms can be difficult to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Shown next are the usual coverages found on most insurance policies.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage provides protection from other motorists when they either have no liability insurance or not enough. This coverage pays for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and also any damage incurred to your 2018 Lincoln MKX.
Because many people carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Normally the UM/UIM limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Comprehensive coverage – Comprehensive insurance will pay to fix damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first have to pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as damage from flooding, damage from a tornado or hurricane and a broken windshield. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Medical payments coverage and PIP – Med pay and PIP coverage provide coverage for immediate expenses such as X-ray expenses, doctor visits and surgery. They can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. It covers you and your occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP coverage is not universally available but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Auto liability – This will cover damage that occurs to a person or their property by causing an accident. This coverage protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You commonly see liability limits of 25/50/25 that translate to $25,000 bodily injury coverage, $50,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000. Another option is a combined single limit or CSL which limits claims to one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability insurance covers things like structural damage, loss of income, emergency aid, attorney fees and repair costs for stationary objects. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.
Collision coverage – This coverage covers damage to your MKX resulting from colliding with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision coverage pays for things like rolling your car, hitting a parking meter, hitting a mailbox, sustaining damage from a pot hole and crashing into a building. This coverage can be expensive, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from lower value vehicles. Another option is to choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.
