Paying low cost coverage rates for insurance coverage could be quite difficult for drivers new to comparing prices online. Because there are so many online companies available, it can quickly become a difficult situation to locate the lowest coverage rates.
How to get cheap car insurance
Comparing car insurance rates is a ton of work if you don’t utilize the best way to get rate quotes. You could waste time talking about coverages with local insurance agents in your area, or you could save time and use online quoting to get rates in a matter of minutes.
Most car insurance companies belong to an insurance system that enables customers to send in one quote, and each company returns a rated price based on that information. This system prevents you from having to do quotation requests for each company you want a rate for. To find out how much you can save on car insurance click here to open in new window.
One minor caviat to getting quotes like this is that you can’t choose which carriers you want pricing from. So if you prefer to choose individual companies to compare rates, we have a listing of low cost car insurance companies in your area. View list of insurance companies.
Whichever method you choose, ensure you are comparing nearly identical coverages and limits for each comparison quote. If you use different data it will be next to impossible to determine which company has the best rates. Even a minor difference in insurance coverages or limits can mean a large discrepancy in price. And when comparison shopping, comparing a large number of companies helps locate more affordable rates.

Insurance coverage policy discounts
Not too many consumers would say insurance coverage is affordable, but you can get discounts to cut the cost considerably. Some trigger automatically when you complete an application, but a few must be asked about before you get the savings.
- Theft Deterent System – Cars and trucks optioned with advanced anti-theft systems are less likely to be stolen and will save you 10% or more.
- Policy Bundle Discount – If you insure your home and vehicles with the same insurance company you may save at least 10 to 15 percent or more.
- Distant Student – Older children who are enrolled in higher education away from home and won’t have access to an insured vehicle could qualify for this discount.
- Multi-Vehicle Discounts – Buying a policy with multiple cars with one company can reduce rates for all insured vehicles.
- Own a Home – Just owning your own home may trigger a policy discount on insurance coverage because of the fact that having a home means you have a higher level of financial diligence.
- Online Discount – Some larger companies will give a small break for buying your policy online.
A little note about advertised discounts, some credits don’t apply to the entire policy premium. The majority will only reduce specific coverage prices like physical damage coverage or medical payments. Even though it appears all the discounts add up to a free policy, company stockholders wouldn’t be very happy. Any qualifying discounts will cut your policy premiums.

How do I know if I need professional advice?
When choosing the right insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no best way to insure your cars. Everyone’s needs are different.
For example, these questions can aid in determining if your situation will benefit from professional help.
- Do I really need UM/UIM coverage?
- Why do I need rental car insurance?
- Can I afford to pay high deductible claims out of pocket?
- When should my teen driver be added to my policy?
- Does my insurance cover a custom paint job?
- What companies insure drivers after a DUI or DWI?
- Am I covered when delivering products for my home-based business?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you think they might apply to your situation, then you may want to think about talking to an insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, simply complete this short form.
Car insurance coverage options for a Honda CR-Z
Learning about specific coverages of your car insurance policy can help you determine appropriate coverage for your vehicles. Policy terminology can be confusing and nobody wants to actually read their policy.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Med pay and PIP coverage provide coverage for immediate expenses for things like dental work, hospital visits and doctor visits. They are used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover you and your occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not universally available and may carry a deductible
Collision coverage
Collision insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by collision with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.
Collision insurance covers things such as sustaining damage from a pot hole, rolling your car and colliding with a tree. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Drivers also have the option to choose a higher deductible to bring the cost down.
Auto liability
This coverage can cover damage or injury you incur to other’s property or people that is your fault. Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. You might see limits of 100/300/100 that means you have a limit of $100,000 per injured person, a total of $300,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a total limit of $100,000 for damage to vehicles and property.
Liability coverage pays for things such as repair costs for stationary objects, repair bills for other people’s vehicles and pain and suffering. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.
Comprehensive insurance
Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage that is not covered by collision coverage. A deductible will apply then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage pays for claims such as rock chips in glass, damage from getting keyed, a broken windshield, a tree branch falling on your vehicle and fire damage. The maximum payout your car insurance company will pay is the market value of your vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage gives you protection when other motorists do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered losses include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and damage to your Honda CR-Z.
Since many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.
