Do you get confused by the number of insurance coverage companies that you can choose from? Many other drivers are too. You have so many choices that it can be a difficult situation to find the lowest price.
How much is car insurance?
To find cheap car insurance quotes, there are several ways to get quotes from many different insurance companies. By far the easiest way to comparison shop is simply to get online rate quotes. This can be done in several different ways.
- The single most time-saving way to find low rates would be an industry-wide quote request form click to view form in new window. This method keeps you from doing multiple quote forms for each company you want a rate for. One form will get you rate comparisons from car insurance companies with the best prices. This is perfect if you don’t have a lot of time.
- A more time consuming way to analyze rates requires you to visit the website for every company you want to comare to complete a price quote. For sake of this example, let’s say you want to compare rates from USAA, Liberty Mutual and Travelers. You would have to visit each site to input your insurance information, which is why most consumers use the first method. For a list of companies in your area, click here.
Whichever method you choose, try to keep the exact same quote data with each company. If each company quotes different data it will be next to impossible to determine the lowest rate for your Toyota Supra. Just slight variations in coverages could mean much higher rates. Just remember that comparing a large number of companies increases the change that you will find a lower rate. Some smaller insurers to not give quotes online, so it’s important to also get quotes from the smaller companies as well.

Tailor your auto insurance coverage to you
When choosing adequate coverage, there is no cookie cutter policy. Every situation is different.
Here are some questions about coverages that can help discover whether or not you might need professional guidance.
- Do I need to file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
- Is business property covered if stolen from my car?
- Is business equipment covered while in my vehicle?
- Is a blown tire covered by insurance?
- Do I need special endorsements for business use of my vehicle?
- What is no-fault insurance?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions but you know they apply to you, you might consider talking to a licensed agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form.
Car insurance coverage basics
Understanding the coverages of your car insurance policy can be of help when determining appropriate coverage for your vehicles. The coverage terms in a policy can be confusing and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Collision protection
This coverage covers damage to your Supra caused by collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You will need to pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.
Collision can pay for things such as hitting a mailbox, scraping a guard rail, crashing into a ditch, colliding with another moving vehicle and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. Another option is to increase the deductible to bring the cost down.
Comprehensive coverages
This pays to fix your vehicle from damage from a wide range of events other than collision. A deductible will apply then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things such as a broken windshield, a tree branch falling on your vehicle and damage from getting keyed. The maximum payout your car insurance company will pay is the market value of your vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Auto liability
This provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to a person or their property that is your fault. This coverage protects you against claims from other people. It does not cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. Your policy might show values of 50/100/50 that translate to $50,000 bodily injury coverage, $100,000 for the entire accident, and $50,000 of coverage for damaged propery. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability insurance covers things such as attorney fees, funeral expenses, emergency aid, loss of income and medical services. How much liability coverage do you need? That is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
Coverage for medical payments
Med pay and PIP coverage provide coverage for immediate expenses for dental work, funeral costs, nursing services and surgery. They are often used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. Coverage applies to you and your occupants in addition to being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP is only offered in select states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Uninsured and underinsured coverage
This protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. This coverage pays for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Frequently your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
