- A slightly less efficient method to find better pricing is to take the time to go to the website for every company you want to comare and go through the quote process again. You would need to spend time on each company’s site and repeatedly enter your information, which explains why we recommend starting with the first method. Car insurance is unique, just like you
When buying proper insurance coverage, there really is not a cookie cutter policy. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
For instance, these questions may help you determine if you would benefit from an agent’s advice.
- Can I still get insurance after a DUI?
- Is my babysitter covered when using my vehicle?
- Am I covered if I wreck a rental car?
- What is the rate difference between pleasure use and commuting?
- Does my insurance cover my expensive audio equipment?
- Do I benefit by insuring my home with the same company?
- What are the financial responsibility laws in my state?
- Am I covered if I drive in a foreign country?
- Will my insurance pay for OEM parts?
- Is other people’s property covered if stolen from my vehicle?
If you can’t answer these questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you might consider talking to an insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, simply complete this short form. It only takes a few minutes and may give you better protection.
Car insurance coverages and their meanings
Knowing the specifics of your policy can be of help when determining appropriate coverage at the best deductibles and correct limits. Policy terminology can be confusing and coverage can change by endorsement.
Insurance for medical payments – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for immediate expenses for things like EMT expenses, chiropractic care, funeral costs, surgery and ambulance fees. They are often utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover all vehicle occupants and also covers any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Collision coverage – This coverage covers damage to your 80 from colliding with another car or object. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers things like driving through your garage door, sideswiping another vehicle, crashing into a building and scraping a guard rail. This coverage can be expensive, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. Drivers also have the option to increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist insurance – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and damage to your Audi 80.
Because many people have only the minimum liability required by law, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is very important. Most of the time your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are similar to your liability insurance amounts.
Coverage for liability – Liability coverage protects you from damages or injuries you inflict on other people or property in an accident. It protects YOU against other people’s claims, and does not provide coverage for damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You commonly see liability limits of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, $300,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $100,000. Some companies may use a combined limit that pays claims from the same limit and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage protects against claims such as emergency aid, loss of income, repair bills for other people’s vehicles, repair costs for stationary objects and legal defense fees. How much liability should you purchase? That is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as high a limit as you can afford.
Comprehensive coverage (or Other than Collision) – Comprehensive insurance will pay to fix damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims such as rock chips in glass, a broken windshield, vandalism and hitting a bird. The highest amount you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider dropping full coverage.
