Looking for lower car insurance rates for your Chevrolet Prizm? Wish you could get out of an overpriced car insurance policy? It’s a common feeling and you are not the only one feeling buyer’s remorse.
You have so many car insurance companies to purchase coverage from, and though it is a good thing to have multiple companies, having more insurers makes it harder to adequately compare rates.
How to buy insurance
To find the best insurance prices, there are several ways to compare rate quotes from insurance companies in your area. One of the best ways to compare rates is to perform an online rate comparison. This can be accomplished by using one of the methods below.
Hands down the most simple method consumers can analyze rates is to use a rate comparison form click to view form in new window. This form saves time by eliminating separate quotation requests for each company. A single form will return price quotes from insurance companies with the best prices.
A more difficult way to get quotes online consists of visiting each company’s website and complete a new quote form. For instance, we’ll assume you need rates from Geico, 21st Century and Liberty Mutual. In order to compare rates, you need to navigate to each company’s site and repeatedly type in your coverage information, and that’s why the first method is more popular. The final method to get price estimates is making phone calls or going to each insurance agency near you. Quoting online eliminates the middleman unless you have a need for the professional advice that you can only get from talking to an agent. It is possible with some companies price shop online but purchase the actual policy in an agency.
You can choose any of those ways to find more affodable coverage, but do your best to enter the exact same coverage information for each price quote. If the quotes have higher or lower deductibles it will be very difficult to decipher which rate is best. Having just a slight variation in insurance coverages or limits could mean much higher rates. And when price shopping your coverage, comparing more rates from different companies helps you find the best offered rates.

Discount auto insurance quotes
Auto insurance companies don’t always list all their discounts very well, so the below list has some of the best known and the more hidden discounts that you can inquire about if you buy auto insurance online.
- Anti-theft System – Cars and trucks equipped with anti-theft or alarm systems are stolen less frequently so companies will give you a small discount.
- Active Service Discounts – Having a deployed family member could qualify you for better premium rates.
- Use Seat Belts – Drivers who require all vehicle occupants to buckle up can save up to 15% off the medical payments premium.
- E-sign Discounts – Certain companies will give a small break for buying your policy on the web.
- No Accidents – Claim-free drivers have much lower rates when compared to accident-prone drivers.
- Driver Training Discounts – Taking part in a driver safety course could save 5% or more and easily recoup the cost of the course.
- Discounts for Multiple Vehicles – Buying coverage for more than one vehicle on one policy can reduce the rates for all insured vehicles.
- Smart Student Discounts – Maintaining excellent grades can be rewarded with saving of up to 25%. This discount can apply well after school through age 25.
- One Accident Forgiven – This one isn’t a discount, but some companies like Progressive, Allstate, and Geico allow you one accident without getting socked with a rate hike if you have no claims prior to the accident.
- Cautious Driver Discount – Insureds who avoid accidents can pay as much as 50% less on Prizm insurance than drivers with accidents.
A quick disclaimer, some credits don’t apply to the entire policy premium. Most only reduce specific coverage prices like liability, collision or medical payments. So even though it sounds like it’s possible to get free car insurance, auto insurance companies aren’t that generous.

Tailor your insurance coverage coverage to you
When buying proper insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is not a single plan that fits everyone. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs so your insurance needs to address that. For example, these questions might help in determining if your insurance needs will benefit from professional help.
- Will my rates increase for filing one claim?
- Do I benefit by insuring my home with the same company?
- Do I need PIP coverage since I have good health insurance?
- Can I rate high risk drivers on liability-only vehicles?
- Where can I find high-risk insurance?
- Should I drop comprehensive coverage on older vehicles?
- Are rental cars covered under my policy?
If you can’t answer these questions but you know they apply to you then you might want to talk to an agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, complete this form or click here for a list of insurance coverage companies in your area.
Car insurance coverages 101
Having a good grasp of your car insurance policy helps when choosing which coverages you need and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be difficult to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Below you’ll find typical coverages found on most car insurance policies.
Comprehensive insurance
Comprehensive insurance coverage covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. A deductible will apply then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things like hitting a deer, damage from getting keyed, damage from flooding, falling objects and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider removing comprehensive coverage.
Med pay and Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for expenses such as prosthetic devices, X-ray expenses, hospital visits and rehabilitation expenses. The coverages can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers all vehicle occupants as well as being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP is not universally available and may carry a deductible
Collision coverage
This covers damage to your Prizm from colliding with an object or car. You first must pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision insurance covers things like backing into a parked car, rolling your car, colliding with another moving vehicle and scraping a guard rail. This coverage can be expensive, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from lower value vehicles. It’s also possible to raise the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when the “other guys” are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family as well as damage to your 2001 Chevy Prizm.
Because many people only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea. Usually the UM/UIM limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Liability insurance
Liability insurance can cover damage or injury you incur to other’s property or people that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people, and doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have policy limits of 100/300/100 that means you have a $100,000 limit per person for injuries, $300,000 for the entire accident, and property damage coverage for $100,000. Alternatively, you may have a combined single limit or CSL which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.
Liability coverage pays for claims such as legal defense fees, court costs, loss of income and medical services. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
