There isn’t anyone who looks forward to paying for car insurance, particularly when they could find better rates elsewhere.
Online insurance companies like State Farm, Allstate, Geico and Progressive continually bombard you with advertising and it is difficult to ignore the flashy ads and take the time to shop coverage around.
You should take the time to check car insurance prices before your next renewal since insurance prices are usually higher with each renewal. Even if you got the lowest quotes on Cirrus insurance last year you can probably find a better rate now. You’ll find a ton of advice on car insurance out there, but I’m going to show you some solid techniques on how to lower your car insurance rates.
If you have car insurance now, you will most likely be able to lower your premiums substantially using these techniques. Finding the best rates is easy if you know what you’re doing. Although drivers do need to understand the way companies determine prices and take advantage of how the system works.
Insurance coverage quotes comparison
Most larger insurance companies like State Farm and Allstate provide price estimates directly from their websites. Doing online price comparisons is pretty painless because it’s just a matter of typing in your coverage preferences into the quote form. Once entered, their rating system will order your driving record and credit report and provides a quote. Being able to quote online helps simplify price comparisons, but the work required to visit multiple sites and type in the same information is a big time waster. But it’s very important to have as many quotes as possible if you want to find the lowest price.
A less time-consuming method to find lower prices makes use of a single form that gets prices from many companies. This type of form saves time, eliminates repetitive work, and makes comparison shopping much more efficient. As soon as the form is sent, your coverage is rated and you can choose your choice of the quotes returned.
If the quotes result in lower rates, you simply finish the application and buy the new coverage. It takes just a few minutes to complete and can result in significant savings.
In order to find out how much you’re overpaying now, simply click here to open in new window and enter your vehicle and coverage information. To compare your current rates, we recommend you enter coverages and limits as close as possible to your current policy. This helps ensure you will get an apples-to-apples comparison for similar insurance coverage.

More affordable rates with these auto insurance discounts
Auto insurance companies don’t always publicize the entire discount list very clearly, so the below list has some of the more common and the harder-to-find credits available to lower your premiums when you buy car insurance online. If you do not check that you are getting every discount you qualify for, you are paying more than you should be.
- No Claim Discounts – Drivers who stay claim-free are rewarded with significantly better rates on car insurance quote in comparison with drivers who are more careless.
- Home Ownership Discount – Simply owning a home may earn you a small savings because of the fact that having a home requires personal responsibility.
- Drivers Ed for Students – Teen drivers should successfully complete driver’s ed class in school or through a local driver safety program.
- Low Miles Discount – Maintaining low annual mileage may enable drivers to earn lower premium rates due to less chance of an accident.
- Save with a New Car – Buying insurance on a new vehicle can save up to 30% since newer vehicles are generally safer.
- Discounts for Government Workers – Being employed by or retired from a federal job may reduce rates when you quote car insurance on Cirrus insurance with some auto insurance companies.
- Life Insurance – Insurance carriers who offer life insurance give a discounted price on car insurance if you buy a life insurance policy as well.
- Distant Student – Youth drivers who are enrolled in higher education away from home and leave their car at home may be insured at a cheaper rate.
As a sidenote, most of the big mark downs will not be given the the whole policy. A few only apply to specific coverage prices like liability and collision coverage. So when it seems like adding up those discounts means a free policy, it doesn’t quite work that way. But all discounts should help lower the cost of coverage.
Popular auto insurance companies and some of the discounts include:
- Geico offers premium reductions for emergency military deployment, federal employee, membership and employees, five-year accident-free, multi-vehicle, and defensive driver.
- Travelers policyholders can earn discounts including early quote, payment discounts, continuous insurance, student away at school, and save driver.
- Nationwide offers discounts including Farm Bureau membership, business or organization, family plan, easy pay, multi-policy, accident-free, and good student.
- Farmers Insurance has discounts for early shopping, pay in full, multi-car, switch companies, bundle discounts, and youthful driver.
- Esurance may offer discounts for safety device, online quote, emergency road assistance, online shopper, and DriveSense.
- State Farm may include discounts for anti-theft, multiple policy, safe vehicle, driver’s education, multiple autos, good student, and student away at school.
- Progressive offers discounts for multi-policy, continuous coverage, homeowner, multi-vehicle, good student, online quote discount, and online signing.
- Mercury Insurance may have discounts that include age of vehicle, good student, multi-policy, type of vehicle, and professional/association.
Before you buy a policy, ask every insurance company which discounts they offer. Some discounts listed above may not apply to policies in every state. If you would like to view providers that can offer you the previously mentioned discounts, follow this link.
Insurance coverage can get complicated
When it comes to buying adequate coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is no one size fits all plan. Everyone’s situation is a little different so your insurance needs to address that. For example, these questions may help you determine if your insurance needs may require specific advice.
- Will filing a claim cost me more?
- Is my nanny covered when driving my vehicle?
- What can I do if my company won’t pay a claim?
- What are the best liability limits?
- How can I get high-risk coverage after a DUI?
- Do I need higher collision deductibles?
- Why am I required to buy high-risk coverage?
- Is business property covered if stolen from my car?
- Do I have newly-aquired coverage?
- Will my insurance pay for OEM parts?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but one or more may apply to you, you might consider talking to a licensed agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, complete this form or you can also visit this page to select a carrier
Auto insurance 101
Knowing the specifics of auto insurance can help you determine the right coverages for your vehicles. The terms used in a policy can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. Below you’ll find typical coverage types available from auto insurance companies.
Uninsured and underinsured coverage – Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle when the “other guys” either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered losses include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Most of the time these coverages do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Coverage for medical payments – Med pay and PIP coverage pay for bills like chiropractic care, hospital visits, doctor visits, nursing services and EMT expenses. The coverages can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance program or if you do not have health coverage. Coverage applies to both the driver and occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not available in all states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
Collision coverages – Collision insurance covers damage to your Cirrus from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers things such as crashing into a building, driving through your garage door and backing into a parked car. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from lower value vehicles. Drivers also have the option to raise the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
Coverage for liability – Liability insurance provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to other people or property. It protects YOU from claims by other people, and does not provide coverage for damage to your own property or vehicle.
Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. As an example, you may have liability limits of 25/50/25 which means a limit of $25,000 per injured person, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $25,000. Occasionally you may see one number which is a combined single limit which provides one coverage limit rather than limiting it on a per person basis.
Liability insurance covers things like funeral expenses, repair costs for stationary objects and medical expenses. How much liability should you purchase? That is a decision to put some thought into, but consider buying higher limits if possible.
Comprehensive coverages – This covers damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. A deductible will apply then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive insurance covers things like hail damage, vandalism and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The most your auto insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.

More quotes mean more savings
As you prepare to switch companies, you should never skimp on critical coverages to save a buck or two. There are too many instances where drivers have reduced liability limits or collision coverage only to regret they didn’t have enough coverage. Your strategy should be to find the BEST coverage at the best price while not skimping on critical coverages.
Cheaper insurance is possible from both online companies in addition to local insurance agencies, so you need to quote car insurance with both to get a complete price analysis. Some insurance companies do not offer rates over the internet and many times these small insurance companies sell through independent agents.
