Save a ton with these insurance coverage discounts
Companies offering auto insurance don’t always advertise all possible discounts in a way that’s easy to find, so we took the time to find both well-publicized and the harder-to-find discounts you could be receiving when you buy auto insurance online.
- Student in College – Children who live away from home at college and do not take a car to college can be insured at a reduced rate.
- Multiple Vehicles – Insuring all your vehicles on the same insurance coverage policy may reduce the rate for each vehicle.
- Renewal Discounts – A few insurance coverage companies allow discounts for buying a policy early. It can save you around 10%.
- Drivers Ed for Students – Have your child take driver’s ed class in high school.
- Pay Now and Pay Less – If you can afford to pay the entire bill rather than paying in monthly installments you may reduce your total bill.
- E-sign – A handful of insurance coverage companies give back up to $50 for buying your policy over the internet.
- Discount for Low Mileage – Keeping the miles down on your GMC may allow you to get lower insurance coveragerates on the low mileage vehicles.
One thing to note about discounts is that some of the credits will not apply to the overall cost of the policy. Most only cut individual premiums such as comprehensive or collision. Even though it may seem like you would end up receiving a 100% discount, you’re out of luck.
A list of companies and a partial list of their discounts are included below.
- Progressive includes discounts for continuous coverage, online quote discount, multi-policy, good student, and homeowner.
- The Hartford policyholders can earn discounts including anti-theft, bundle, vehicle fuel type, air bag, defensive driver, driver training, and good student.
- Mercury Insurance may offer discounts for good driver, type of vehicle, good student, multi-policy, anti-theft, and accident-free.
- Geico offers premium reductions for membership and employees, anti-lock brakes, seat belt use, defensive driver, and driver training.

Insurance can get complicated
When it comes to buying the best insurance coverage, there really is not a “perfect” insurance plan. Everyone’s situation is a little different.
For instance, these questions might point out whether or not you might need professional guidance.
- How high should my uninsured/underinsured coverage be in my state?
- How much liability do I need to cover my assets?
- Am I missing any policy discounts?
- What is the rate difference between pleasure use and commuting?
- How can I get my company to pay me more for my totalled car?
- What is the difference between comprehensive and collision coverage?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, you may need to chat with an insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, simply complete this short form. It only takes a few minutes and may give you better protection.
Are you falling for claims of savings?
Consumers can’t ignore all the ads that promise big savings for switching by Progressive, Geico, Allstate and State Farm. All the ads make the same claim of big savings if you get a free auto insurance quote and switch to their company.
How can each company offer drivers better rates? Here is the trick they use.
Insurance providers have specific criteria for the type of driver that will most likely be profitable. For instance, a profitable risk profile could possibly be between the ages of 30 and 45, carries full coverage, and drives less than 5,000 miles a year. Any driver that fits those parameters will probably get the lowest rates as well as save a lot of money.
Drivers who do not fit those criteria may receive a higher premium which leads to the customer not buying. If you listen to the ad wording, they say “people that switch” not “everyone that quotes” save the amount stated. That’s why companies can truthfully make the claims of big savings.
Because every company is different, you really need to compare many company’s car insurance rates. It is impossible to predict which insurance company will have the best rates at this point in time.
Coverage specifics
Learning about specific coverages of car insurance helps when choosing the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Car insurance terms can be ambiguous and reading a policy is terribly boring.
Comprehensive or Other Than Collision – This coverage pays for damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first must pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive coverage protects against claims such as damage from getting keyed, vandalism, damage from a tornado or hurricane and falling objects. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider dropping full coverage.
Liability auto insurance – This coverage provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on other people or property by causing an accident. It protects YOU from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.
It consists of three limits, per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You commonly see liability limits of 100/300/100 that means you have a limit of $100,000 per injured person, a per accident bodily injury limit of $300,000, and a total limit of $100,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which combines the three limits into one amount with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability can pay for things such as court costs, legal defense fees and repair costs for stationary objects. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but consider buying as large an amount as possible.
Medical costs insurance – Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage reimburse you for short-term medical expenses for things like doctor visits, chiropractic care, nursing services and rehabilitation expenses. They are used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. Coverage applies to you and your occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available but can be used in place of medical payments coverage
UM/UIM Coverage – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage provides protection when other motorists are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as damage to your GMC Sierra 2500HD.
Because many people only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked. Most of the time the UM/UIM limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Collision – Collision insurance pays for damage to your Sierra 2500HD resulting from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. A deductible applies then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage protects against claims like colliding with a tree, hitting a mailbox, scraping a guard rail and crashing into a building. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are older. It’s also possible to increase the deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Online plus local equals savings
Drivers change insurance companies for a variety of reasons including unfair underwriting practices, high rates after DUI convictions, an unsatisfactory settlement offer or delays in paying claims. When buying insurance coverage, it’s not a good idea to buy poor coverage just to save money. Too many times, consumers will sacrifice uninsured motorist or liability limits and discovered at claim time that a couple dollars of savings turned into a financial nightmare. Your goal should be to find the BEST coverage at the lowest possible cost, but do not skimp to save money.
