Trying to find low-cost insurance for a GMC Sierra 1500 can turn out to be difficult, but you can use the following methods and make it easy.
There is a better way to shop for car insurance and you need to know the absolute fastest way to compare rates on a GMC and get the lowest possible price from local insurance agents and online providers.
Discount insurance coverage rates
Some companies don’t always list all available discounts in an easy-to-find place, so the list below gives a summary of a few of the more common and also the lesser-known credits that may apply to you. If you’re not getting every credit possible, you are just wasting money.
- Pay Upfront and Save – By paying your entire bill at once rather than spreading payments over time you can avoid monthly service charges.
- Passive Restraints and Air Bags – Options like air bags or automatic seat belts may qualify for discounts up to 30%.
- Memberships – Affiliation with a professional or civic organization may earn a discount on your next renewal.
- Discount for Life Insurance – Not every insurance company offers life insurance, but if they do you may earn a discounted rate on car insurance if you buy some life insurance in addition to your auto policy.
- Anti-lock Brake System – Vehicles with ABS and/or traction control prevent accidents and the ABS can save up to 10%.
- Drivers Education – Teen drivers should participate in a local driver’s education class in high school.
- No Charge for an Accident – This one isn’t a discount, but some companies like Allstate and State Farm will let one accident slide without the usual rate increase if you have no claims before the accident.
- Low Mileage – Low mileage vehicles can earn cheaper premium rates.
- Bundle and Save – If you insure your home and vehicles and insure them with the same company you may save at least 10 to 15 percent or more.
It’s important to understand that many deductions do not apply to all coverage premiums. Most only apply to specific coverage prices like collision or personal injury protection. Just because you may think you can get free auto insurance, it just doesn’t work that way.
Larger insurance coverage companies and some of the discounts can be read below.
- State Farm may offer discounts for passive restraint, multiple autos, safe vehicle, anti-theft, and good student.
- Geico policyholders can earn discounts including multi-policy, driver training, emergency military deployment, membership and employees, five-year accident-free, and federal employee.
- Allstate offers premium reductions for safe driver, multi-policy, premier plus, farm vehicle, good payer, teenSMART discount, and anti-theft.
- SAFECO includes discounts for safe driver, anti-theft, homeowner, multi-car, and accident prevention training.
- Farm Bureau may include discounts for youthful driver, multi-vehicle, multi-policy, driver training, good student, safe driver, and renewal discount.
- Progressive offers discounts for online quote discount, good student, homeowner, online signing, and multi-policy.
- AAA offers discounts including good student, AAA membership discount, multi-car, multi-policy, pay-in-full, anti-theft, and education and occupation.
Before buying, ask each insurance company how you can save money. Some of the discounts discussed earlier might not be available to policyholders in your area.

Tailor your car insurance coverage to you
When buying the best car insurance coverage for your vehicles, there is no perfect coverage plan. Coverage needs to be tailored to your specific needs.
These are some specific questions can help discover if you may require specific advice.
- What can I do if my company won’t pay a claim?
- What if I total my 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 and owe more than it’s worth?
- Do I get a pro-rated refund if I cancel my policy early?
- Why am I be forced to buy a membership to get insurance from some companies?
- How high should my uninsured/underinsured coverage be in my state?
- Should I bundle my homeowners policy with my auto?
- Is my camper covered by my car insurance policy?
- Can I make deliveries for my home business?
If you can’t answer these questions but a few of them apply, you might consider talking to an insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, fill out this quick form. It is quick, free and can provide invaluable advice.
But they said I’d save $410 a year!
Consumers can’t avoid all the ads that claim the cheapest prices by companies like 21st Century, Allstate and State Farm. All the companies make the same claim about savings if you just switch your coverage to them.
How is it plausible that every one can save you money?
Insurance companies require specific criteria for the right customer that will be a good risk. One example of a desirable insured may be married and over the age of 30, carries high limits, and drives a vehicle with a low ISO rating. A driver who fits that profile will get very good car insurance rates and have a good chance to save a lot of money.
Drivers who don’t qualify for the ideal profile may be forced to pay a higher rate and this results in the driver buying from a lower-cost company. If you pay attention, the ads say “people who switch” but not “all drivers who get quotes” save that much. This is how companies can state the savings.
Different companies use different criteria so drivers must do a quote comparison often. It is just not possible to predict which company will have the lowest rates.
The coverage is in the details
Having a good grasp of your insurance policy helps when choosing the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Insurance terms can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers
This coverage gives you protection when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as damage to your GMC Sierra 1500.
Since a lot of drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked. Normally your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are set the same as your liablity limits.
Medical expense insurance
Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP pay for bills for ambulance fees, hospital visits and surgery. They can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover both the driver and occupants in addition to if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP coverage is not available in all states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
Auto liability insurance
Liability coverage protects you from damage or injury you incur to a person or their property that is your fault. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have liability limits of 100/300/100 that means you have a limit of $100,000 per injured person, a limit of $300,000 in injury protection per accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Some companies may use one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which combines the three limits into one amount with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability insurance covers things such as medical expenses, loss of income and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a personal decision, but you should buy as much as you can afford.
Auto collision coverage
This coverage covers damage to your Sierra 1500 resulting from colliding with another car or object. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage protects against things such as colliding with another moving vehicle, hitting a mailbox, hitting a parking meter and colliding with a tree. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are older. You can also increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
Comprehensive (Other than Collision)
Comprehensive insurance coverage pays for damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You first have to pay a deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive can pay for things like hail damage, damage from flooding and hitting a deer. The most a insurance company will pay at claim time is the market value of your vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Be a Smart Shopper
Consumers switch companies for any number of reasons including extreme rates for teen drivers, delays in responding to claim requests, denial of a claim and even high prices. Regardless of your reason for switching companies, choosing a new company can be less work than you think.
Some insurance companies may not offer online quoting and most of the time these smaller companies work with independent agents. Cheaper insurance can be bought online as well as from insurance agents, so you should be comparing quotes from both in order to have the best chance of saving money.
As you quote auto insurance, never reduce needed coverages to save money. In many instances, someone sacrificed liability limits or collision coverage only to regret at claim time that the small savings ended up costing them much more. Your goal should be to get the best coverage possible at the best price, not the least amount of coverage.
