Save a ton with these insurance coverage discounts
Some insurers don’t always advertise the complete list of policy discounts very clearly, so the list below contains both well-publicized in addition to some of the lesser obvious discounts that may be available.
- ABS and Traction Control Discounts – Cars and trucks that have steering control and anti-lock brakes are much safer to drive so you can save 10 percent or more.
- Air Bag Discount – Vehicles with factory air bags or motorized seat belts may get savings of 20 to 30 percent.
- Driver’s Ed – Make teen driver coverage more affordable by requiring them to enroll and complete driver’s education in school.
- Defensive Driver Discount – Completing a course that instructs on driving safety is a good idea and can lower rates if you qualify.
- Own a Home – Just being a homeowner can save you money because owning a home shows financial diligence.
- Low Mileage Discounts – Driving fewer miles could earn lower rates on the low mileage vehicles.
- No Charge for an Accident – Not really a discount, but certain companies allow you one accident before they charge you more for coverage so long as you are claim-free prior to the accident.
One thing to note about discounts is that most discounts do not apply to the entire cost. Most only cut the cost of specific coverages such as physical damage coverage or medical payments. So despite the fact that it appears you could get a free insurance coverage policy, it’s just not the way it works.
A list of companies and some of the premium reductions they offer can be found below.
- State Farm has discounts for passive restraint, anti-theft, good student, good driver, and safe vehicle.
- Progressive offers discounts for good student, multi-policy, multi-vehicle, online quote discount, and homeowner.
- Travelers policyholders can earn discounts including IntelliDrive, home ownership, driver training, new car, and early quote.
- American Family may have discounts that include good student, mySafetyValet, TimeAway discount, multi-vehicle, Steer into Savings, and defensive driver.
- Liberty Mutual may offer discounts for multi-car, newly married, hybrid vehicle, teen driver discount, exclusive group savings, good student, and multi-policy.
If you need cheaper insurance coverage quotes, ask every prospective company which discounts can lower your rates. Depending on the company, some discounts might not be available to policyholders in your area. To view companies that offer multiple discounts, click here to view.

Car insurance can get complicated
When choosing the best car insurance coverage, there is no cookie cutter policy. Your needs are not the same as everyone else’s.
Here are some questions about coverages that could help you determine whether your personal situation may require specific advice.
- Can I get a multi-policy discount?
- Is my nanny covered when driving my vehicle?
- Should I sign the liability waiver when renting a car?
- Am I better off with higher deductibles on my 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe?
- Can I drive in Mexico and have coverage?
- Where can I get insurance after a DUI in my state?
If you can’t answer these questions but you think they might apply to your situation, you might consider talking to an insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, fill out this quick form. It’s fast, free and can provide invaluable advice.
Insurance coverages explained
Having a good grasp of your policy can be of help when determining the best coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. The terms used in a policy can be ambiguous and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
Your UM/UIM coverage provides protection when the “other guys” do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered losses include hospital bills for your injuries as well as damage to your 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe.
Due to the fact that many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea. Usually these coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Comprehensive coverage
Comprehensive insurance coverage pays for damage from a wide range of events other than collision. A deductible will apply and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.
Comprehensive can pay for things like hitting a bird, damage from flooding, rock chips in glass, vandalism and fire damage. The most your insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s not worth carrying full coverage.
Auto liability
Liability insurance provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on a person or their property. This coverage protects you from legal claims by others. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.
Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have values of 25/50/25 that translate to a $25,000 limit per person for injuries, a per accident bodily injury limit of $50,000, and property damage coverage for $25,000. Another option is a combined limit which provides one coverage limit without having the split limit caps.
Liability coverage protects against things such as bail bonds, court costs, pain and suffering, repair bills for other people’s vehicles and medical expenses. How much liability coverage do you need? That is a personal decision, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.
Medical payments coverage and PIP
Med pay and PIP coverage pay for bills for things like funeral costs, nursing services, rehabilitation expenses and pain medications. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you do not have health coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP is only offered in select states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Auto collision coverage
This pays for damage to your Santa Fe resulting from a collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.
Collision coverage pays for things such as damaging your car on a curb, colliding with a tree and scraping a guard rail. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
