Did a good deal turn into an overpriced insurance policy? Believe me when I say many consumers are feeling buyer’s remorse and feel like there’s no way out. Numerous auto insurance companies battle for your insurance dollar, so it can be very hard to choose a insurer to find the best rates possible.
If you have a current insurance policy or are just looking to switch companies, you can follow these tips to find better prices and still get good coverage. Finding affordable coverage is not rocket science. Drivers just need to know the proper methods to shop over the internet.
Buy insurance online
There are a lot of ways to compare insurance quotes, but some are less time-consuming than others. You could spend your day discussing policy coverages with insurance agencies in your area, or you can utilize the internet to quickly compare rates.
Many popular insurance companies are enrolled in a marketplace where insurance shoppers enter their coverage request one time, and at least one company provides a quote based on that information. This eliminates the need for quotation requests for every insurance company.

The one downside to using this type of system is you cannot specify which providers you want to price. So if you prefer to choose individual companies to request quotes from, we have a page of the cheapest insurance companies in your area. Click to view list.
It’s your choice how you get your quotes, but compare equivalent information on every quote you get. If the quotes have different deductibles it will be impossible to make an equal comparison.

Do you qualify for discounts?
Car insurance companies don’t necessarily list every discount they offer in a way that’s easy to find, so we researched a few of the more common as well as the least known ways to save on car insurance.
- Safety Restraint Discount – Drivers who require all occupants to buckle up could save 15% on the premium charged for medical payments and/or PIP.
- Air Bags and Passive Restraints – Vehicles equipped with air bags can get savings of up to 25% or more.
- Bundle and Save – If you can bundle your auto and homeowners insurance with the same company you may earn 10% to 20% off each policy.
- Lower Rates for Military – Being deployed in the military can result in better prices.
- Discounts for New Vehicles – Buying a new car instead of a used car can save you some money due to better safety requirements for new vehicles.
- Senior Citizens – Drivers over the age of 55 can possibly qualify for better car insurance rates on Sonata coverage.
- Accident Forgiveness Coverage – This isn’t a discount exactly, but some insurance companies will let one accident slide without the usual rate increase if you have no claims for a specific time period.
Keep in mind that some credits don’t apply to all coverage premiums. Some only apply to the cost of specific coverages such as physical damage coverage or medical payments. Despite the fact that it seems like you can get free auto insurance, car insurance companies aren’t that generous. But all discounts will cut your overall bill.
Larger car insurance companies and their possible discounts can be read below.
- Progressive may include discounts for homeowner, online quote discount, good student, multi-vehicle, and multi-policy.
- Farmers Insurance offers premium reductions for homeowner, multi-car, good student, youthful driver, and switch companies.
- Farm Bureau may offer discounts for good student, multi-policy, youthful driver, multi-vehicle, and 55 and retired.
- State Farm includes discounts for accident-free, multiple policy, Drive Safe & Save, Steer Clear safe driver discount, defensive driving training, and good driver.
- Geico may have discounts that include driver training, emergency military deployment, membership and employees, multi-policy, and anti-lock brakes.
- SAFECO offers discounts for drive less, teen safe driver, anti-theft, accident prevention training, and anti-lock brakes.
- Liberty Mutual has discounts for good student, hybrid vehicle, preferred payment discount, new graduate, and multi-car.
When comparing rates, check with each insurance company which discounts you qualify for. Savings may not be available in your area. To locate companies with discount car insurance rates, click this link.
Don’t assume everyone needs the same insurance coverage coverage
When it comes to choosing adequate coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no single plan that fits everyone. Everyone’s situation is a little different and your policy should reflect that. For example, these questions could help you determine if your situation could use an agent’s help.
- Does my personal policy cover me when driving out-of-state?
- Why does it cost so much to insure a teen driver?
- Am I covered by my spouse’s policy after a separation?
- Am I covered if I crash into my own garage door?
- Can my babysitter drive my car?
- Am I covered if hit by an uninsured driver?
- Am I covered if I break a side mirror?
- Is upholstery damage covered by car insurance?
- Which companies will insure high-risk drivers?
- Is my teenager covered with friends in the car?
If it’s difficult to answer those questions but one or more may apply to you, you may need to chat with an agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, complete this form or click here for a list of insurance coverage companies in your area. It is quick, free and may give you better protection.
Auto insurance coverages 101
Understanding the coverages of your policy can be of help when determining the right coverages at the best deductibles and correct limits. Policy terminology can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. Shown next are typical coverages found on most auto insurance policies.
Collision coverage – This coverage covers damage to your Sonata resulting from a collision with an object or car. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision coverage protects against things such as colliding with a tree, sustaining damage from a pot hole, colliding with another moving vehicle, damaging your car on a curb and hitting a parking meter. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. Drivers also have the option to increase the deductible to save money on collision insurance.
Medical expense coverage – Med pay and PIP coverage pay for bills such as EMT expenses, doctor visits, X-ray expenses, ambulance fees and pain medications. The coverages can be used in conjunction with a health insurance plan or if you are not covered by health insurance. Medical payments and PIP cover all vehicle occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not available in all states and may carry a deductible
Liability coverages – This coverage provides protection from damage or injury you incur to other people or property that is your fault. This coverage protects you from claims by other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.
Liability coverage has three limits: bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. Your policy might show limits of 50/100/50 which stand for a limit of $50,000 per injured person, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and a limit of $50,000 paid for damaged property. Occasionally you may see a combined single limit or CSL that pays claims from the same limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability coverage pays for things such as structural damage, repair bills for other people’s vehicles and emergency aid. How much coverage you buy is a decision to put some thought into, but consider buying as high a limit as you can afford.
Uninsured or underinsured coverage – This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Since a lot of drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is a good idea. Frequently the UM/UIM limits do not exceed the liability coverage limits.
Comprehensive protection – This will pay to fix damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.
Comprehensive coverage pays for things like hitting a bird, damage from flooding, falling objects and fire damage. The maximum payout you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider removing comprehensive coverage.

Get your money’s worth
We covered a lot of ways to save on 1994 Hyundai Sonata insurance. It’s most important to understand that the more rate comparisons you have, the more likely it is that you will get a better rate. You may be surprised to find that the best premium rates are with some of the smallest insurance companies. Regional companies often have lower prices on specific markets than the large multi-state companies such as Allstate, Geico and Progressive.
Low-cost 1994 Hyundai Sonata insurance can be purchased on the web as well as from independent agents, and you need to comparison shop both to have the best chance of lowering rates. There are still a few companies who do not provide online quoting and these regional carriers only sell through independent insurance agents.
