Did you fall for a flashy sales pitch and buy an underperforming, overpriced insurance coverage policy? Believe me when I say you’re not the only one. With people having so many different company options, it can be impossible to choose a lower cost company.
The quickest method to compare rates is to know most larger insurance companies provide online access to give free rates quotes. To get started, all you need to do is take a few minutes to give details like which vehicles you own, your education level, how old drivers are, and if you are currently licensed. That rating data is then sent to multiple companies and they respond with quotes with very little delay.

Do you qualify for discount auto insurance?
Auto insurance is not cheap nor is it fun to buy but there could be significant discounts that many people don’t even know exist. A few discounts will be applied when you purchase, but a few must be inquired about before you will receive the discount. If you are not receiving all the discounts available, you could be paying more than you need to.
- Mature Driver Discount – Drivers over the age of 55 may qualify for a discount up to 10% on Cooper coverage.
- Accident Free – Drivers who don’t have accidents pay less as opposed to insureds who have frequent claims or accidents.
- Accident Forgiveness Coverage – Not necessarily a discount, but companies like State Farm and Allstate permit an accident without raising rates if you are claim-free for a certain period of time.
- Early Renewal Discounts – Select auto insurance companies give a discount for renewing your policy before your current coverage expires. You could save around 10% when you buy auto insurance online.
- Seat Belts Save – Drivers who require all occupants to use a seat belt can save 10% or more off the personal injury premium cost.
- Distant Student Discount – Any of your kids who are enrolled in a college that is more than 100 miles from home and do not take a car to college may be able to be covered for less.
- Anti-theft Discount – Anti-theft and alarm system equipped vehicles prevent vehicle theft and will qualify for a discount on a auto insurance quote.
- ABS Braking Discount – Cars and trucks with anti-lock braking systems are much safer to drive so companies give up to a 10% discount.
A little note about advertised discounts, most credits do not apply the the whole policy. Most only reduce the cost of specific coverages such as medical payments or collision. Even though it may seem like having all the discounts means you get insurance for free, companies don’t profit that way. Any qualifying discounts will help reduce your policy cost.
Companies and their possible discounts are:
- Progressive may include discounts for online signing, homeowner, online quote discount, multi-policy, good student, and multi-vehicle.
- SAFECO policyholders can earn discounts including drive less, anti-theft, teen safe driver, accident prevention training, and teen safety rewards.
- American Family offers discounts including defensive driver, bundled insurance, early bird, mySafetyValet, good driver, and Steer into Savings.
- MetLife may have discounts that include claim-free, good driver, good student, defensive driver, and multi-policy.
- Geico offers premium reductions for driver training, daytime running lights, multi-policy, federal employee, emergency military deployment, and anti-lock brakes.
- The Hartford offers discounts for defensive driver, driver training, air bag, anti-theft, bundle, vehicle fuel type, and good student.
If you want the cheapest auto insurance quotes, ask all companies you are considering which discounts you qualify for. All car insurance discounts may not apply to policyholders everywhere.

What insurance coverages do I need?
When choosing coverage, there isn’t really a cookie cutter policy. Every insured’s situation is different so your insurance needs to address that. Here are some questions about coverages that may help highlight if your insurance needs would benefit from professional advice.
- Can I get a multi-policy discount for packaging my home and auto coverage?
- Am I better off with higher deductibles on my 2014 MINI Cooper?
- Are there companies who specialize in insuring high-risk drivers?
- Will I lose any money if I cancel my policy before it expires?
- How do I file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
- At what point should I drop full coverage?
- Is borrowed equipment or tools covered if stolen or damaged?
- Does coverage extend to Mexico or Canada?
If you’re not sure about those questions, you may need to chat with an insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, simply complete this short form or go to this page to view a list of companies. It is quick, free and can provide invaluable advice.
What auto insurance coverages do you need?
Learning about specific coverages of your auto insurance policy can be of help when determining which coverages you need for your vehicles. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and reading a policy is terribly boring. These are the usual coverages found on most auto insurance policies.
Comprehensive (Other than Collision)
Comprehensive insurance will pay to fix damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.
Comprehensive can pay for things such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, damage from getting keyed, theft, hail damage and hitting a bird. The maximum payout you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.
Auto liability
This provides protection from damages or injuries you inflict on other people or property in an accident. This insurance protects YOU from claims by other people, and does not provide coverage for damage to your own property or vehicle.
Coverage consists of three different limits, per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You commonly see limits of 25/50/25 that translate to a limit of $25,000 per injured person, a total of $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property. Occasionally you may see one limit called combined single limit (CSL) that pays claims from the same limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.
Liability can pay for claims such as repair bills for other people’s vehicles, loss of income, funeral expenses and medical services. How much coverage you buy is your choice, but consider buying as large an amount as possible.
Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers
Your UM/UIM coverage gives you protection when other motorists do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered losses include hospital bills for your injuries as well as your vehicle’s damage.
Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Usually your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
Medical expense insurance
Med pay and PIP coverage reimburse you for expenses such as rehabilitation expenses, funeral costs and ambulance fees. The coverages can be utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. Coverage applies to not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not universally available and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
Coverage for collisions
Collision insurance covers damage to your Cooper caused by collision with another car or object. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.
Collision insurance covers claims such as crashing into a ditch, colliding with a tree, sideswiping another vehicle and hitting a mailbox. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider dropping it from lower value vehicles. You can also bump up the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.
